Palin Puts Nov. 4 Election in God's Hands

By Eric Gorski|AP Religion Writer

DENVER – Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin describes herself as a "hard-core pro-lifer" and expresses confidence that in spite of disheartening polls, "putting this in God's hands, that the right thing for America will be done at the end of the day on Nov. 4."

In an interview with evangelical leader James Dobson that aired Wednesday, Palin said she thought Republican presidential candidate John McCain would implement the GOP platform if elected — "I do, from the bottom of my heart" — but McCain doesn't support the platform on three issues important to evangelicals: abortion, gay marriage and embryonic stem cell research.

The platform calls for a constitutional ban on gay marriage, an issue McCain says should be left to individual states. Similarly, the platform seeks a constitutional ban on all abortions; again, McCain supports allowing states to decide the question. McCain supports research using embryonic stem cells, which the platform opposes.

Palin called it a "strong platform" and told Dobson, "They are there, they are solid, we stand on them and, again, I believe that it is the right agenda for the country at this time."

The Alaska governor talked by phone with Dobson for about 20 minutes Monday while she was in Colorado campaigning. Dobson's Focus on the Family radio program aired the interview Wednesday.

Dobson asked whether Palin was discouraged by polls showing the GOP ticket behind.

"To me, it motivates us, makes us work that much harder," Palin said. "And it also strengthens my faith, because I'm going to know, at the end of the day, putting this in God's hands, that the right thing for America will be done at the end of the day on Nov. 4. So I'm not discouraged at all."

Palin has not focused on her faith on the campaign trail, but it clearly has energized evangelical leaders like Dobson, whose radio show reaches an estimated 1.5 million Americans daily.

Dobson has come around to supporting the McCain-Palin ticket after previously saying he could not in good conscience vote for McCain. He endorsed former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee late in the primaries.

Palin thanked Dobson and supporters for their prayers and — when Dobson inquired about the importance of faith in her life — said: "It is my foundation, yes, my Christian faith is."

She also used terms like "prayer warrior" and "intercession" — words that might be unknown to the average listener but are common vocabulary in Pentecostal Christianity. Palin spent 20 years in a Pentecostal Assemblies of God Church, but she usually refers to her faith generically as Christian, not even evangelical.

"It is that intercession that is so needed and so greatly appreciated," Palin told Dobson. "And I can feel it too, Dr. Dobson. I can feel the power of prayer, and that strength that is provided through our prayer warriors across this nation."

She continued: "When we hear along the rope lines that people are interceding for us and praying for us, it's our reminder to do the same, to put this all in God's hands, to seek his perfect will for this nation, and to of course seek his wisdom and guidance in putting this nation back on the right track."

Describing herself as a "hard-core pro-lifer," Palin said the birth of a son with Down syndrome was "this opportunity for me to really be walking the walk and not just talking the talk. There's purpose in this also and for a greater good to be met there."

Palin said the campaign had to have faith that its message will be heard "minus the filter of the mainstream media."

"That filter has to be erased," she said. "So we have to have faith in the wisdom of the people that they'll understand what our message is. But even bigger that then, I have to have that faith that God is going to help us get that message out there."

holito, palin doesn't know anything. She has demonstrated this in the few interviews she had given. She couldn't name a paper she reads, she doesn't understand that a member of the executive branch (VP) is not in control of a part of the legislative branch (Senate), the list of signs of ignorance is long. If she was capable at performing at a higher level than reading off a TelePromter, she woud have given interviews on news programs such as PBS, Meet the Press, Face the Nation, etc. Seriously, if palin is the best the GOP has to offer, it is in serious trouble. palin is one reason mccain is doing so poorly in the polls.

Palin may not be as elegant as Obama. Moses was not a dynamic speaker; she might not be as glamorous as Obama, neither was John the Baptist, Elijah, Elisha or Jonah. But she has stated her faith and that cannot be refuted. For her to be governor, she must have presented herself as a capable candidate. God does not require His servant to be flashy but standing firm in their faith.

notbyworks "seems like a number of people think Gov Palin is not on certain political shows because she cannot hold her own on them. Not so. "

Yeah right, Im sure she avoids "Meet the Press" and "NewsHour" because of her religious beliefs...LOL

I take it notbyworks that the Christian tradition of self denial features large in your life?

seems like a number of people think Gov Palin is not on certain political shows because she cannot hold her own on them. Not so. The worldview she holds, as many Christians do hold, is so unpopular that when it comes through it sets off strange panic among the secularists. They are keeping her off those shows to prevent more attacks on her faith and what that means. I don't know how she stands with God, but she sure isn't afraid to acknowledge Him; wish she would call Him by Name: JESUS.

Caught up over the weekend with what Mrs P had to say about fruit flies, I never knew her knowledge of genectics was so deep. I would not want her as my VP but there is an impish side to me that just wonders what it would be like, must be my sense of humour.

"I'm not sure what television you have been watching, but Governor Palin is getting a great deal of exposure through media interviews and press conferences.

She has done very well and is pretty much seen everyday now."

Why hasnt palin been on programs such as "Meet the Press" or PBS "NewsHour"

Well, here is the answer in case you dont know: She is not capable of responding to questions that require in depth analysis and knowledge.

    You have said....
"Yes, this is true, and some within the Republican Party think she is setting herself up for a run in 2012 to the detriment of John McCain."

The fact is that McCain is currently not planning to run for re-election after his first term. This is the reason why Palin is such a good strong running mate.

If she does decide to run in 2012, the experience issue won't be an issue.

There is no embarrasement when Christianity is mocked by the secular world. This is expected and welcomed.

The embarrasement is when the mocking comes from within the Christian community itself.

For conservative Christians, Governor Palin is very nicely answering the "faith" question where McCain has chosen to be more silent.

For liberal Christians it seems that they have chosen to join the secular world in being more critical of Palin's conservative positions.

This is the embarrasement. It shows a division in the Christian community that has been very confusing and hurtful in this election season.

<"Palin Puts Nov. 4 Election in God's Hands"

God is not an American citizen and it can't vote here.>

God does not need to vote. He is sovereign over the affairs of humans. He is powerful, loving, merciful and holy.

<It's interesting that God never provides any evidence for its existence. The people who believe in it have to imagine its existence. Nobody has ever seen it. There's no evidence for it. It makes no effort to prove it exists. It can't influence anything, not an election, not even a baseball game. It's obvious us human apes are all alone here. There is no magic fairy hiding in the clouds watching over us. We are on our own. Praying to an imaginary Mr. God will never accomplish anything. The destiny of the human race and our tiny planet is completely up to us.>

So sad, so blind, so meaningless when there is no God.

The logical conclusions of "no God":

    1) No ultimate moral right & wrong. (Just take a poll of humans instead)

    2) No ultimate justice. (Life is unfair on earth. End of story)

    3) No ultimate meaning to life. (Power, riches, pleasures--all temporary purposes, really mean nothing in the end.) Dust to dust...

    4) No hope! (Just live out this miserable short human life span, die, end of story)

Do atheists truly live in such a way that is consistent with such logical extensions of their belief systems? No!

They live as if they have meaning, purpose, & hope. Otherwise, the intellectually honest answer to their world view would be suicide.

But few atheists are intellectually & consistently living their beliefs to that degree of honesty.

The logical conclusions of God's existence:

Ultimate moral right & wrong, purpose, meaning, justice & hope. In other words, a true reason to live!

    Thanks for asking wr.

I have been watching Fox News (fair and balanced) over here, I have seen no press conferences or interviews over the past few weeks, I have seen lots of speechs made on the stump.

Back to the main point though. It must be embaressing to the majority of Chrsiatians in the states though that she says (or the artcile on CP does)that she is mocked etc..for her faith and not her comments when interviewed etc..in other words, if you critisize me its down to my faith and nothing else...how childish.

If she does get voted in you be would be well within your rights to condsider that Gods judgement.

    Regards as ever

"She has done very well and is pretty much seen everyday now."

Yes, this is true, and some within the Republican Party think she is setting herself up for a run in 2012 to the detriment of John McCain.

Today, during her first policy speech, she scoffed at earmarks that fund the very research that is instrumental in unraveling the mysteries of Autism. For many reasons, fruit flies are one of the primary species used for all kinds of genetic research all over the world. But of course Sarah knows nothing about that, how could she, she has never taken a college-level science course. Besides, the bible, in spite of all it reportedly teaches us about our origins, tells us nothing about genetics, so I guess that particular earmark can be easily done away with.

One of the major problems I, and many others have with a Palin administration is the devastating effect another four years of ignoring the needs of science would have upon our country.

One has to look no further than her family to see the regard in which she holds intellectual pursuits of any kind, let alone the advancement of science. After all, who needs it with the rapture so close.

On the other hand, the Democrats appear to have tucked Senator Biden away in fear he will say something that can be used against him and Obama. And it is known that Obama and Biden are not the best at working together.

While McCain and Palin have demonstrated great teamwork in support of each other, Obama and Biden have shown the opposite.

You barely see Biden at all these days.

Please tell us what your sources are for the information about the $150,000 clothing.

This clothing was not purchased by Governor Palin. The clothing was provided to her courtesy of the Republican National Committee.

The RNC has a budget that they must adhere to during this campaign process. This $150,000 falls well within the budget.

In addition, other Republican candidates have been granted far more money than Palin. This $150,000's is a drop in the bucket.

  • Fri Oct 24, 2008 5:52 pm Agree: 4   Disagree: 6

Palin is so laughable. If this election is in the hands of God, then why did she find it necessary to spend $150,000 on her wardrobe?
According to Palin, this election is NOT in the hands of God. Apparently, it's in the hands of NIEMAN MARCUS!

dmorcats77, it amazes me that there are those who believe that she is denigrated due to her faith. The reason she is denigrated is because of the interviews etc..she has given. Why do you think she no longer gives them or will not give press conferences. I appreciate that it is your right to support her but don't denigrate the Christian faith by pretending that it is the reason for the criticism she recieves.

    Kind regards

I like Sarah Palin and will be voting for the McCain/Palin ticket on election day.

    Two thoughts...

Does that mean therefore that if Obama is elected then that is Gods will? (Personlly I don't think the election is in the hand of God but in the millions who will vote, if it was why campaign?)

If Mrs P has not focused on her faith why is there an article on CP with Mrs P claiming her faith and God have been mocked?

    Steve

  • Fri Oct 24, 2008 1:44 pm Agree: 7   Disagree: 6

My bet is that "God's will" is going to be that sister Sarah go back to Alaska and continue making it "rapture ready" for the faithful come judgment day.

I think she should encourage her followers to pray all they want. For my part, I would rather knock on doors, make phone calls and do anything else I can to help Sarah return to Alaska to do God's will.
