World Evangelical Assembly Opens in Thailand

PATTAYA, Thailand – More than 500 evangelical Christians from over 100 nations took part in a colorful and ethnically festive opening ceremony for the World Evangelical Alliance General Assembly in Thailand Saturday night.

National flags of delegates were paraded into the main conference hall and Thai dance and music were featured at the event that kicked off the weeklong gathering being held at the beach resort city of Pattaya.

The Rev. Dr. Geoff Tunnicliffe, WEA international director, set the tone of the Assembly – the first in seven years – by telling delegates that the gathering will be a time to refresh their vision for integral mission.

“We need a fresh vision for and commitment to the work of the body of Christ around the world that reflects our focus on integral mission, on holistic mission, on the transformation of the Gospel,” he said. “We desperately need that new, fresh vision.”

But the vision, Tunnicliffe maintains, must be faithfully based on the Scripture.

“We need a renewal of our historic commitment to the character of the Gospel and our biblical distinctive as evangelical Christians who are committed to the authority of Scripture,” he said. “What drives us and undergirds us is our commitment to the Scriptures.”

Tunnicliffe was joined on Saturday by the Deputy Permanent Secretary of Thailand, Kanda Vajrabhaiya, who pointed to areas of common interest between Evangelicals and the Thai Government, including poverty reduction, HIV and AIDS, human rights, child protection and women issues.

“The WEA is a meaningful network to us in implementing programs to assist, protect and empower those vulnerable groups and improve the life conditions of those considered as disadvantaged people in this country,” said Vajrabhaiya. “It is also consistent with Christianity’s principles of right living for the benefit and interests of other people.”

The Thai official also lauded Christianity for playing a crucial role in the development of her country.

“This year marks 180 years since Christian missionaries came to Thailand,” she pointed out. “Thus far Christians have not only brought knowledge such as education, technology and medicine, but also established infrastructure like schools, universities and hospitals to help Thai people.”

Beyond Thailand, the Oct. 25-30 conference will discuss how Evangelicals worldwide can help address the issues of poverty, HIV and AIDS, and religious liberty, as well as church transformation and Evangelical engagement in the public square during “Living Room” plenaries – a new feature at the Assembly that allows for open conversations between experts and participants.

This year’s Assembly boasts a diverse array of organizations and denominational church bodies that include representatives of Pentecostal World Fellowship, the Mennonite community, World Alliance of Reformed Churches, the Charismatic stream, the China Christian Council, and historic mainline Churches.

“We want a greater appreciation, affirmation and assimilation of the various global evangelical movements,” noted Tunnicliffe, whose organization represents some 420 million evangelical Christians across the world.

On Sunday, participants were scheduled to commit their first full conference day to fasting and praying for global issues of concern.

“We want this week to be an encouragement to evangelical leaders in their often discouraging and lonely work,” Tunnicliffe said. “The work of being involved in an Evangelical Alliance is not easy. The work of encouraging Christian unity is not easy and it is easy to get discouraged.”

The WEA international director has announced plans to publish a book based on the outcomes of the Assembly meetings, which conclude on Oct. 30.

“We are a community of grace. We are going to demonstrate our love to one another and live out what it means to be disciples of Jesus who love one another,” Tunnicliffe said.

“We want to build a culture of Christ so that when we leave this place we will say ‘these are sisters and brothers I can trust because I know them,’ and we will move out together.”

    Salvation by works

    According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church – second edition, 1994, 1997 – Article II Grace and Justification, section III Merit – p. 487- paragraph 2010 states:

    Since the initiative belongs to God in the order of grace, no one can merit the initial grace of forgiveness and justification, at the beginning of conversion. Moved by the Holy Spirit and by charity, WE CAN THEN MERIT FOR OURSELVES AND FOR OTHERS the graces needed for our sanctification, for the increase of grace and charity, and for the ATTAINMENT of eternal life.

    This is contrary to what the Scriptures teach; listen to the following passages:

    Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. Romans 3:28

    But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. Romans 4:5

    Knowing that a man is not justified by the works by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. Galatians 2:16.

    So, we see that the Scriptures teach that salvation is a GIFT, we cannot earn a gift – Romans 6:23, Ephesians 2:8, 9. How does one earn a gift?

    Tradition equal to Scripture

    Jesus declared, the scriptures cannot be broken (John 10:35) and he constantly used phrases like (it is written), (how readest thou), (have you not read), and (did ye never read in the scriptures). The very phrase (It is written) means exclusively transcribed, and not hearsay. In stating (It is written), the Lord used the exact same phrase that is used in the Scriptures some forty six times. The persistence of this repeated phrase underlines its importance.

    Where do we find tradition elevated to such status in the Scriptures; where is it authoritatively quoted?


    Repetitious prayers

    I have never heard of that song you posted; nevertheless, it is a song, not a prayer. (But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking) Matthew 6:7.

    Purgatory/prayer for the dead

    The very idea of Purgatory, and the doctrines that are often attached to it (prayer for the dead, indulgences, meritorious works on behalf of the dead, etc.) all fail to recognize that Jesus’ death was sufficient to pay the penalty for ALL of our sins. Jesus, who was God incarnate (John 1:1, 14), paid an infinite price for our sin. Jesus died for our sins ONCE (1 Corinthians 15:3). Jesus is the atoning sacrifice for our sins (1 John 2:2). To limit Jesus’ sacrifice to atoning for original sin, or sins committed before salvation, is an attack on the Person and Work of Jesus Christ. If we must in any sense PAY for, ATONE for, or SUFFER because of our sins – that indicates Jesus’ death was not a perfect, complete, and sufficient sacrifice.

    Transubstantiation/adoration of the host

    Jesus made it exceedingly obvious what He meant; John 6:63 declares, (The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life). Jesus specifically stated that His words are (spirit). Jesus was using physical concepts, eating and drinking, to teach spiritual truth. Just as consuming physical food and drink sustains our physical bodies, so are our spiritual lives saved and built up by spiritually receiving Him, by grace through faith. Eating Jesus flesh and drinking His blood are symbols of fully and completely receiving Him in our lives.

    The Scriptures declare that the Lords Supper is a memorial to the body and blood of Christ (Luke 22:19; 1 Corinthians 11:24-25), not the actual consumption of His physical body and blood. When Jesus was speaking in John chapter 6, Jesus had not yet had the Last Supper with His disciples, in which He instituted the Lord’s Supper. To read the Lords Supper back into John chapter 6 is unwarranted.

    Transubstantiation should be rejected because it is a (re-sacrifice) of Jesus Christ for our sins, or as a (re-offering / re-presentation) of His sacrifice. This is directly in contradiction to what Scripture says, that Jesus died (ONCE FOR ALL) and does NOT need to be sacrificed AGAIN (Hebrews 10:10; 1 Peter 3:18). Hebrews 7:27 declares, (Unlike the other high priests, He (Jesus) does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins ONCE for ALL when He offered Himself).

    Several months ago, I attended a wedding at a Catholic Church and witnessed the priest hold up the wafer and declared, (behold Christ); as he did this, some people knelt down in worship as he publically proclaimed Christ sacrificed; so much for taking heed to the scriptural passages that explicitly declare that Jesus offered himself only ONCE.

    The Jews observed the Passover by slaying a lamb which was an antitype of Christ; will you too declare that these lambs literally became Christs actual body and blood?

    Universal priest/vicar of Christ

    The Bible says of Jesus that there is no other name by which men must be saved (Acts 4:12). There is only one mediator between God and men, and that is Jesus Christ (1 Timothy 2:5). We can now see that there is no Biblical foundation for claiming to be a representative of Christ on earth. No man could do what Christ has done, or what Christ is now doing on behalf of mankind.

    Since He (JESUS) is (holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, [and] exalted above the heavens) (Hebrews 7:26), He is unlike other priests in that He (does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for His own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins ONCE and for all when He offered Himself) (Hebrews 7:27). He ALONE is our high priest.

    Jesus does indeed predict a (vicar) in the sense of a (replacement) for His physical presence here on earth. However, this (vicar of Christ) is not a priest, high priest, bishop, or pope. The only Biblical (vicar of Christ) is the Holy Spirit. John 14:26 declares, (But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you). John 14:16-18 proclaims, (And I will ask the Father, and He will give you ANOTHER Counselor to be with you forever — the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you know Him, for He lives with you and will be IN YOU. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you). The Holy Spirit is Christs (replacement) on the earth. The Holy Spirit is our Counselor, Teacher (John 14:26), and guide into all truth (John 16:13).

    In claiming that the pope is the (vicar of Christ), the Catholic church rejects the sufficiency and supremacy of Christ’s priesthood, and grants to the pope roles that Christ Himself declared would belong to the Holy Spirit. It is therefore blasphemy to ascribe to the Pope the title of (vicar of Christ).

    Adoration of saints /Mariology

    The issue of Catholics praying to saints is one that is full of confusion. It is the official position of the Roman Catholic Church that Catholics do not pray TO saints or Mary, but rather that Catholics can ask saints or Mary to pray FOR them. The truth is, many Catholics do in fact pray directly to saints and/or Mary, asking them for help – instead of asking the saints and/or Mary to intercede with God for help. As a former Catholic I have personally witnessed many people praying TO and asking for blessings FROM the saints themselves. Whether a saint or Mary is being prayed to, or asked to pray, neither practice has any Biblical basis. The Bible nowhere instructs believers in Christ to pray to anyone other than God. The Bible nowhere encourages, or even mentions, believers asking individuals in Heaven for their prayers. The Bible nowhere describes anyone in Heaven praying for anyone on earth.

    Can you quote a passage from scripture where we find someone praying to a saint in heaven or a saint in heaven praying for someone on earth? Also, where do we find in scripture that Mary is mediatrix?

    Indulgences

    There is not a single scriptural example of, or teaching about, an apostle or church leader doling out an (indulgence) to a fellow believer. Not one! From its foundation to its summit the whole structure of the doctrine of indulgences is unfounded biblically.

    indulgences - you likely misunderstand what an indulgence is, do some research

    mariology - scriptural, it begins in the book of Genesis where it talks about The Woman

    Only when Catholicism abandons its unbiblical dogmas such as purgatory, adoration of saints, indulgences, universal priest, mariology, prayers for the dead, tradition equal to Scripture, transubstantiation, adoration of the host, repetitious prayers, and salvation by works will there be any possible reconciliation.

    Maybe you Evangelicals could talk about other important things too, and come to one consensus like us Catholics. The more Unity you have in DOCTRINE, the more chance you have at reconciling with the Holy Catholic Church.

    Here are a few things that SHOULD BE DISCUSSED; infant baptism and believers baptism, Praying in tongues to be saved, Once saved always saved, is Born again an emotion or is it Baptism, Confirmation, Is the bread and wine really the body and blood, women as pastors, hiearchy as Bishop, Priest, Deacon vs. Pastor, asst. Pastor, and so many more.

    Are we saved by faith alone and is the Bible alone sufficient or do we need something else. When you guys can solve these issues that plague your many divided denominations, then it will be time to finally seek communion with you. We pray for you to tackle real issues, rather than fluff.
