Survey: Evangelical Support for McCain Increasing, Not Decreasing

By Aaron J. Leichman|Christian Post Reporter

Christian evangelicals and conservatives are not only largely supporting Republican candidate John McCain, but their support has actually increased, according to a newly released survey.

Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., greets supporters along a rope line at the conclusion of a campaign rally in Miami, Fla., Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008.

Crosswalk.com, the largely popular Christian web portal affiliated with faith-based media giant Salem Communications, polled its email subscribers this week and found a three-point increase (from 80 to 83) in support for McCain over the past month and a one-point decrease (from 13 to 12) in support for Democratic candidate Barack Obama.

The 979 users who responded to the survey were also found to be largely supportive of GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, who had electrified the conservative base after being tapped for the spot in August. While two percent said they no longer supported the Alaska governor as a candidate, about 20 percent said they favored her more as a candidate than they did a month ago.

“Although Sen. Barack Obama’s lead over Republican candidate John McCain has reached double-digits in some states, the Democratic candidate has yet to convince Christian conservatives,” Crosswalk noted.

The latest poll paints a picture different from that of the Pew Research survey released earlier in the week, which showed support for McCain slipping among Christian evangelicals.

According to Pew, the percentage of evangelicals supporting McCain dropped from 74 to 65 in the last three weeks, while Obama gained four percentage points to move up to 22 percent.

Overall, Pew found that the 48 percent of Protestants in general that had supported McCain earlier in the month dropped to 43 percent as of last week, while support for Obama went from 43 to 47.

“Currently, McCain holds a statistically significant advantage only among white evangelical Protestants (aside from Republicans),” Pew stated in its report Tuesday.

Another faith-based survey released this week that illustrated the drastic difference between the voting preferences of evangelicals versus other Protestants was that conducted this month by LifeWay Research.

According to results of the LifeWay survey released Thursday, 36 percent of mainline pastors plan to vote for McCain, 37 percent support Obama, and 24 percent are undecided. Meanwhile, out of self-identified evangelicals, 66 percent said they plan to vote for McCain, 13 percent said they are for Obama, and 19 percent were undecided.

"Mainline pastors reflect the American setting – they are split between Obama and McCain,” observed Ed Stetzer, director of LifeWay Research.

Self-identified evangelical pastors, on the other hand, are overwhelmingly for McCain, he added, drawing a conclusion similar to that of Crosswalk’s general Christian survey.

A very noticeable difference, however, between LifeWay’s findings and that of other faith-based polls was in the data from Protestants in general.

LifeWay found that 55 percent of Protestant pastors had said they plan to vote for McCain. Notably, however, only 20 percent said they planned to vote for Obama. A full 22 percent remain undecided.

"Protestant pastors are strongly for McCain," observed Stetzer. But the number of undecideds given the late date in the campaign is “suprising,” he added.

“The undecided bloc appears to consist largely of pastors identifying themselves as ‘moderate’ or ‘conservative,’” LifeWay observed.

The LifeWay survey also found that more than half (53 percent) of Protestant pastors had personally endorsed candidates for public office this year – outside of their church roles. And less than 3 percent agree that they have publicly endorsed candidates for public office during a church service this year.

Oh please. The whole world thought USA and Americans arrogant, and many hated Americans long before the 1970s, let alone long before Bush.

As follower of Jesus Christ we called to pray for our leaders. Brother and Sisters we musy obey God. At the same time we must pray for the innocent lives that will be lost even more due to the results that the people in this country have wrought. Pray that obama will have an encounter with our Lord Jesus and will bend the knee. Pray that he will seek God's wisdom in the tough times that are ahead. Pray that we as believers will humble ourselfs to kneel down and pray and ask for forgiveness for the mistakes we have made. Gods Bless President Obama
may God have mercy on us. Gods Blessing In Christ Tom

    Good morning, Brothers and Sisters:
Today, God is again asking us to choose: life or death. I chose to stand up with Jesus Christ in this hour; and I encourage you to do the same. We will stand before God one day and give an account for our actions, words. He tells us "do not condemn yourself by what you approve."
We have to obey GOD not man. The single issue alone is the taking of any life, and anyone who would advocate that is choosing death. I pray in Jesus Name for our Nation to be given to JESUS CHRIST... Ask the FATHER to give our Nation to JESUS CHRIST!!!
Stand in UNITY Body of Christ!!! No matter what happens today, GOD is in control, not man! BE Glorified Almighty GOD! JESUS IS LORD!!!!
So today, vote for JESUS CHRIST...we do not deserve a revival, but JESUS CHRIST DOES! REIGN in the UNITED STATES JESUS!!!

    Love in Christ,
    JoAnne
    A servant of Jesus Christ!

Frank Marshall Davis was probably the most influential person in Obama’s life. Cliff Kincaid has an overwhelming number of articles chronicling Obama’s relationship with Davis. Obama talks about him in his book, calling him Frank. He was a key member of a Soviet controlled network sponsored by Moscow and operating in Hawaii. He was a sex pervert, pedophile, pornographer and mentor to Obama from 4 to 7 years. The Associated Press (AP) deliberately cut out the fact that he was a Communist Party member. While the media has tried to ignore the story, Obama has been forced out of hiding while attempting damage control. We know from the record that Davis and Dunham drank alcohol and smoked pot together. Obama admits drinking with Davis as well and going on to smoke marijuana and use cocaine. Ah Quon McElrath, identified as merely “a friend” of Davis’s and quoted by AP, was actually an organizer for the communist-controlled International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU). The ILWU was led by Davis’s friend and associate, secret CPUSA member Harry Bridges. Davis wrote for a newspaper, the Honolulu Record, which was controlled by the CPUSA and subsidized by the ILWU. According to Wikipedia, the paper had been founded in 1948 by Koji Ariyoshi. In 1950, the congressional House Un-American Activities Committee accused Davis of involvement in several communist-front organizations. Frank Marshall Davis authored the pornographic book, Sex Rebel under the pseudonym "Bob Greene."

Dr. Kathryn Takara, a professor of Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa who also confirms that Davis is the "Frank" in Obama's book, did her dissertation on Davis and spent much time with him between 1972 until he passed away in 1987. Takara says that Davis "espoused freedom, radicalism, solidarity, labor unions, due process, peace, affirmative action, civil rights, Negro History week, and true Democracy to fight imperialism, colonialism, and white supremacy. He urged coalition politics."

Speaking of flagging, did you hear about all the ruckus going on in California over Amendment 8?
People who are supporting it are being given death threats and even physically assaulted by pro-gay people. Churches (the biggest opponent to gay marriages) have been egged. People who have signs showing their support of Amendment 8 in their lawn either find them stolen, or people park cars in front of their houses with signs that say "Bigots live here" on them.
And these are the people who think they're responsible enough to want to get married? And they accuse us Christians of persecuting them? It's a sad show on their part.

    >>>Both clinton and mccain both had management and cash flow problems with their campaigns, obama had neither- he will take those management skills to WH.<<<

I knew I had read/heard somewhere some information on campaign financing regarding Obama/McCain, and how it was relative to the difference in the money they each had to work with. I have found some info on it....

But Mr. Obama, the Democratic nominee for president, apparently did not absorb much by way of political cost when he broke a pledge to accept public financing if his opponent did as well.

The 2004 race marked the first time both major nominees, Mr. Kerry and President Bush, decided to bypass the federal matching funds for the primary. Mr. Obama became the first major party candidate to opt out of the system for the general election. The move allowed him to continue raising private donations while Mr. McCain could not.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/03/us/politics/03donors.html?_r=1&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss&oref=slogin

If this is the product of wise management/money skills, I certainly would have to question the means. A problem in integrity, perhaps.....

or you can google 'coal power plant gypsum' for quite a list (it says over 190,000 hits).

    It's a brainiac thing don't 'cha know....

We have a coal fired power plant here in SC that uses a chemical in it's scrubbers which converts most of the waste into gypsum. The gypsum sludge is then pumped next door to the drywall manufacturing company and they make wall board out of it! NO JOKE!!! Ain't that slick? Almost nothing going out the stack....

So, why doesn't Obama know about this sort of thing? It isn't about solutions...it's about power and control.

Obama as well as tho's who support him still think that killing the unborn is okay! and that is wrong. I happen to think the Bush presidency will go down as a good one. Prior to 2006 we all were living pretty good. After the democrats got in power in 2006 this ecomony went into the tank so who's fault is it? Or should I ask Are you better off now with the dems in power(after 2006) or when the rep. were in power,(before 2006). We'll be praying for ya. Gods Blessing In Christ

    Balfour Day, November 2nd
Since Israel is The LORD's only "sundial"+Sondial, and now (May 14, 1948) that she has been Restored to The Land (Joel 3:1), the separation of sheep from goats in Matthew 25:31-46 & Joel 3:2-17 arises out of the 'foreign policy' of the nations towards her. This is the paramount consideration when casting one's vote for any government.
Unto those who exhort, "Come, curse for me Jacob, and come defy Israel" come the prophetic replies:"How shall I curse whom G-D hath not cursed? Or how shall I defy whom The LORD hath not defied?" Numbers 23:7,8. "Inasmuch as you have done it unto one of the least of these My Brethren (Israel ), you have done it unto Me." Matthew 25:40.

  • Sun Nov 02, 2008 9:22 pm Agree: 2   Disagree: 2

i just spoke to a conservative right believer who said he voted for obama. his explanation was, first he believed that with the stresses of the office today it required a young person because he would need to have the energy to completely deal with all the issues.

second he was impressed with the organization of obama who started putting together a campaign for the presidency 2 years ago.......... with the quality of the people he turned to for advice................and how well he was able to organized it. if he could do this well with his own campaign then that was an indication of how well he would be able to organize to handle the duties of his own office.

its not just that he got honors in academia, but there is an iindication that he has real organizational talents

talents that would keep him posted to daily worldwide changes and having the energy, could proactively deal with them..................rather than after the fact.

comparatively speaking, he has probably one of the best organized campaigns in the history of democratic presidential campaigning.

this and his ability to draw people to be in supportive of whatever he is attempting to do.

this is evident by the huge numbers of new people registered to vote compared to the election 4 years ago.

  • Sun Nov 02, 2008 8:27 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

Fortunately the US is not a theocracy and you have no power to prevent others from using BC .

"...Obama has demonstrated many qualities that will make him a good president come jan 2009..."
    So does McCain...

  • Sun Nov 02, 2008 8:00 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

prophet, Obama has demonstrated many qualities that will make him a good president come jan 2009. He is intelligent, thoughtful, steady temperament. He and his staff have run brilliant campaigns which says a lot about how his administration might work. He is a pragmatist, a good communicator and will bring the country together with his ability to connect with the american people. obama represent the end of neoconservatism, mccain is viewed as more of the same, thats why he will not be president.

Both clinton and mccain both had management and cash flow problems with their campaigns, obama had neither- he will take those management skills to WH.

A really big problem for mccain is his running mate pick. palin is completely unqualified for the job, she hasn't the knowledge nor intelligence to be president. She is devisive, the American people are tired of this, the electorate has largely soured on her. mccains pick of her really calls into question his judgement. mccain is erratic and volatile, obama has an even temperment, thats what america needs now.....

As far as the oil thing i concerned, mccain has been in the senate for over 20 years and has, like all politiicns, done nothing to reduce dependence of forein oil. The best option for the US now is to use less fuel through conservation. democrates would support more drilling if it is also coupled with conservation. obama said the US cannot drill itseld to energy independence alone, we also need conservation. He is exactly right about that. obama will support drilling if safe guards are in place to protect environment and conservation measures are put into place.

  • Sun Nov 02, 2008 7:41 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

Well, this aint Europe...just in case you weren't aware of that little bit of trivia.

  • Sun Nov 02, 2008 7:40 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

Here's a scenario. I'm not saying this is what's happening, but when you put two and two together you can see how it could.

McCain is for offshore drilling to ease our dependency on foreign oil.
    Obama isn't.
Many of our foreign oil suppliers are pro-muslim extremists, or sympathetic towards them (is there a difference?)
The foreign oil companies lower oil prices a month before the election in order to try and give American's a false sense of security...make them think "Oh, well, we don't really need offshore drilling, because oil prices are dropping..."
So those who are undecided in the election may be swayed towards Obama, and our continued dependence on foreign oil.

Also, I can't trust a man who refuses to show our flag, and our country, proper respect during the national anthem because he doesn't want to offend non-Americans. And his choice of reading includes the book "The Post-American World"

Yeah, there's a man who will be committed to our constitution, our future, and our country. Right...
