The Field Poll released Friday had opponents of the ban with a 49 percent to 45 percent edge. That's much closer than in previous surveys over Proposition 8.
The poll is based on a random sample of 966 likely voters conducted Oct. 18 to the 28. It has a sampling error rate of plus or minus 3.3 percentage points on the issue.
Twenty-seven states have approved anti-gay marriage ballot measures, including seven in 2006. Besides California, Florida is considering a ban this year.

Is this a great day in America, or what? (since believer and I AGREE on something; i.e., your last post.)
hlerwin, you appear to be making an assumption already by assuming I think things will be worse off under obama, but I honestly don't know, but I do know I would rather put my hope and trust in God rather than in a man. As long as he desires to do what is right in the sight of God then you may be right, but if he chooses not to then we as a nation may have to pay a heavy price for his choices.
OK, believer, I'll play devil's advocate (not literally, I hope!). Sometimes I wonder if Jesus really did change the world that much. So much of "the world" is just the way it was before Christ came. The phrase "but they were wrong too!!" demonstrates how we shut opposing views out of our discussions. I think you are just as wrong as you think I am.(And deep down - just like you - I KNOW I am really, really right.) Is our world so different from that of pre-Jesus squabbling Jewish leaders?
hlerwin, the Jewish religious leaders were thinking the same thing with regards to themselves when they crucified Jesus Christ, but they were wrong too!!
Tomorrow will change America forever -- for the better. Obama will be our president, and I pray the clear thinkers in California will defeat this throw-back of a proposition.
SqueakyWheel, Thank you for your prayers, we in California need all those prayers...God help us.
mike22685, to imply would mean we basically don't have valid statistical support to our claim with regards to the high rate of multiple partners among male homosexuals, but in reality we have those statistics and some even come out of the homosexual camp. Based on that I can see same-sex marriage decreasing that some among male homosexuals, but overall I believe the divorce rate will eventually go up and not down if same-sex marriage becomes the law of the land. But that does not have one thing to really do with why I am personally opposed to same-sex marriage.
OK, but the same can be said for committed gay couples. I don't think "inability" to commit is a real thing, I think it is a learned behavior, and with people like you who imply that gays are not capable of commitment, the idea put out there is "well, they're right, so I'll just sleep around." The reason I can commit is because when I came out, my parents said it does not change anything and their expectations were still that I would become a good, honest, loving man, and they support my relationship with my partner fully. How is it that you can apply a statistic to my community and it must be truthful, but when a statistic is thrown back at the straight community, you try to step around it?
mike22685, the reality is sexual intimacy outside of God's design has many negative consequences to include the statistic you cited. But with God there is always the opportunity to be forgiven and allowed the ability to begin again. So the statistic you shared just reinforces exactly what I've been saying all along that God's design for marriage is one man and one woman united as one in the sight of God for life and that God's design for sexual intimacy is reserved for the marriage bed of one man and one woman united as one in the sight of God for life through marriage. If society would follow those standards STDs wouldn't near be the problem as they are now.
Believer, I'm pretty sure a while ago on this very site there was an article abot 1 in 4 teenage girls having and STD. Guess straight marriage is down the tubes for 1 in 4 adult girls, huh? If you want to judge a community on statistics, you'd better check yours first. There are plenty of skeletons in your own closet to deal with before you try to place blame on the gay community.
Oh...that's right...it's Associated Press...nevermind....
yes, who is blaming homosexuals for the high rate of divorce, it is phat who believes that same-sex marriage will curb the divorce rate which I find interesting since there is much validated research that says homosexual males are known for having multiple sex partners which is one of the reasons for the high rate of HIV/AIDS in the male homosexual community in America. Based on phat's remark does that mean same-sex marriage will insure monogomy among homosexual male couples or will the adultery rate go through the ceiling or will the divorce rate go up in the future?
The father was told that since same-sex marriage is legal in Mass. they no longer had to get parents permission to expose their children to teaching about a lifestyle that many in America still find offensive and yet parents are still given the right to keep their children out of sex education classes and sex between consenting adults is legal in Mass, so what's the difference. He was arrested because he refused to leave until someone gave him a legitimate answer, by the way which he never got.
With all due respect, PhatDajuan's promise does not mean much. Anyone who would change their vote based on such a flimsy assurance is gullible.
On the contrary, the redefinition of traditional marriage will have MAJOR consequences for California & for the rest of the nation.
Religious liberties will be in jeopardy. Pro-homosexual indoctrination will be forced upon our public school children. Adoption agencies will be forced to allow same-sex couples to adopt children or be forced to close down.
Non-profit organizations will be forced to hire homosexuals against their religious beliefs and organizational principles.
Any slight criticism of the homosexual lifestyle on the radio, in the pulpit, or in print will be considered a "hate crime" & subject to fines and/or jail time.
Beware of the anti-prop 8 supporters diluting the consequences of a prop 8 defeat.
Read & think outside the box; bypass the mainstream media talking heads!
Believers from all over the world are praying & pulling for you, Pro-Prop 8 supporters!
Trust in the Lord! Be strong in the Name of the Lord!
So we're now blaming divorce on homosexuals? You know what else homosexuals are responsible for? Cancer. Famine. That rash you get when you leave a wet bathing suit on for too long. Oh yeah, and homosexuals were actually the ones who killed Jesus.
Don't bother Believer about facts or logic. They're against his religion.
Hey Mike22685, what do you expect from people who are spoon-fed all their talking points by the Family Research Council?
You want to talk about exaggeration believer? How about the fact that the father was arrested because he refused to leave the principal's office? You make it sound as if he was doing nothing wrong, which is factually incorrect.
phat, explain that to the father in Mass. who was arrested for daring to question why his 5 year old son was being taught about same-sex couples without first getting the permission of his parents. Plus lets not exaggerate with this "years" statistic of yours what its been two to three years, lets wait till ten years and see what the stats on divorce look like then.
I can PROMISE you with 100% certainty that if Proposition 8 is rejected by California voters, it will have absolutely NO effect on "the pro-family, traditional marriage foundation of America." Straight couples will continue to date, get engaged, marry and build families together as they always have. The divorce rate will not go up; after all, Massachusetts (where Gay couples have been marrying for years now) has the LOWEST divorce rate of all 50 states. Most importantly of all, churches will not be forced to conduct weddings for Gay couples, any more than they have been forced to marry Muslim couples. Nothing will happen to freedom of religion, and I don't really care who preaches against Gay Americans, as long as we are treated equally under the law.
