S.F. Christians Out to Break 'Sodom and Gomorrah' Mentality

By Katherine T. Phan|Christian Post Reporter

SAN FRANCISCO — Out to break the commonly-held notion that Christianity is about judging others, a group of San Francisco Christians braved the rain on Saturday to show only "Agape Love" to the city's needy.

The part music-festival, part-outreach "I AM LOVE…360" event mobilized dozens of youth volunteers from local San Francisco Bay Area churches to Civic Center Plaza to show the love of God in a practical way by handing out free meals, blankets and prayers to the homeless and needy.

"God's love is complete and worldwide. Christians should be the first to reach out to whomever, wherever," Living Grace Fellowship pastor Rodgar McCalmon, who organized the free event, told The Christian Post.

"San Francisco is just a starting point. Hopefully, people see what this event is and go into other towns," he added.

Among believers, the word "love" has become ubiquitous to Christianity. It is rare to hear a sermon in which the pastor fails to mention the love of Jesus and the love of God.

However, while many Christians say the most important thing in their faith is a relationship of love with God and their neighbors, non-Christians still hold negative perceptions of present-day Christianity. According to a 2007 Barna study, 80 percent of non-Christians view evangelical Christianity as judgmental and hypocritical.

Christians gathered at the I AM LOVE event on Saturday were out to change that perception. Although the Election is just a few days away, no one mentioned politics. Communicating — not just speaking about — love was their top priority.

Even though it rained, participants maintained a "rain or shine" attitude.

Actor Stephen Baldwin, who emceed the music festival, said in his opening remarks that he planned to stay the whole in spite of the weather.

"We are here no matter what. That's what I AM LOVE 360 is all about," Baldwin told the umbrella-covered and poncho-wearing audience.

"We are here to be obedient to the spirit of the Lord. Even if it rains all day, we are going to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to San Francisco."

Philip Bardowell, a former band member of The Beach Boys, performed the song "Day After Rain."

"All the rain will not quench this thirst today," said Bardowell.

Other Christian groups and musicians that took the stage included Todd Agnew, Seventh Day Slumber, Thankfull, Nathan Justin, Missing Piece, JB Blue and Richard Andrew.

As the crowd in front of City Hall swayed and bobbed their heads to live faith-filled music, volunteer Gloria Huerta was standing by the SF Rescue Mission tent, handing out food vouchers to the needy. The ministry was prepared to hand out 5,000 bagged lunches.

Speaking with The Christian Post, Huerta, a member of Raven Ministries in Santa Rosa, said anyone entering the tent for assistance was first was presented with the Word and asked if they needed a prayer. Those in need were also told how they could receive shelter and food other days of the week.

Although she acknowledged the outreach lasted only a day, she believed even a word or prayer given out of love can give them the hope they need to connect again.

"A lot of people are out here because of things that happen in their life. Some are here by choice. But we still need to love them anyway. And when the Lord is ready to pull them off the streets, He'll do it," said Huerta, who has worked five years in street ministry. Continue »

Examples that we are to teach and preach repentance.

Mark 1:4 John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. V. 5 And all the country of Judea was going out to him ….and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.

Acts 2 Peter’s sermon on the day Pentecost
    v. 37 Now when they had heard this (his sermon), they were pierced to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the Apostles, “what shall we do?” v38 and Peter said to them “Repent, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

Acts 17:30 a sermon by Paul
Therefore having over-looked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men (that would be mankind –men and women) that all everywhere should repent, because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men (again – mankind), by raising Him from the dead.”

Acts 26 Paul before King Agrippa
v.19 “Consequently, King Agrippa, I did not prove disobedient to the heavenly vision, but kept declaring both to those of Damascus first, and also at Jerusalem and then throughout all the region of Judea, and even to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, performing deeds appropriate to repentance.”

    thepenitent,

I understand the frustration being expressed, but it came across harsh.

I think its safe to say that all of us who trust Christ look forward to Judgment day. I look forward to the end of people (myself included) no longer disappointing God.

the comments by "thepenitent" shows he needs to 'repent'. His sanctimonious, self-righteous, smug, foolish mindset ain't gonna help anyone of the homosexual community to become Christians, and poisons the work of those who want to be "speaking the truth in love" (Eph 4:15), and to walk in wisdom with non-Christians and always speak with grace, or graciously, so that Christians know how to answer anyone (Col. 1:5-6). I think the Bible teaches he would go to the same hell as anyone who has sex with the same sex, and it suppose to be only by divine grace that he won't (if he is really a Christian), not his/her inherent righteousness, which the bible says he/she doesn't have. It's easy for Christians to pontificate, look down on, snub those who are -fill in the blank here-, but it takes a lot more to obey the passages they don't want to. Thepentitent has an ID that he needs to take to heart. Christians don't have to change with a poll, but all should take note of it, and see where they can improve and show more than prideful, condescending snobbery, which isn't a good testimony and people are rightly turned off by that kind of garbage.

Preaching the message of " Repentance " is indeed an act of love.

Second, It is Impossible to " Love " with the God-Kind of love that God commands without first repenting of sin in our hearts and lives.

One cannot be " Godly " without first, " Repentance ' of sin, that the heart is pure and clean in the sight of God.

First, sodam and gommorrah have nothing to do with wall stree, It is about men lusting after men, and women after women, Then engaging in sex with them, which is sin.

Second, concerning the Barna study, As the Church makes judgments concerning society, based on the Word of God, The World will always deem it judgmental and hypocritical, what else is new.

The Church can only do and say what the Scriptures declare, That is their duty as Christians, and let the chips fall where they may.

jcmjoe stated "Where does it tell us to tell people they need to repent?" and he (or she? sorry!) has a point. It is up to the Spirit to convict the unbeliever of the sin of...unbelief! Then, Jesus tells the new believer to repent.

"People! Jesus himself tells us to do 2 things! 1. Love the Lord your God with all of your heart, soul, mind and strength. 2. Love your neighbor as yourself."

That's right. Exactly how can you do those things if you are alienated from God? First, you must restore the lost relationship through repentance. Those two commandments are what you 'put on' after you 'put off' the flesh (repent).

How can you truely love God if you are not restored? How could the prodical son be back in relationship with his father if he does not first go to him and repent?

jcm, "where does it tell us to repent", you are kidding aren't you, Christ's first message was just that "Repent", to wholeheartedly love God requires repentance to turn from our sins and turn to God by putting our complete faith/trust in the person and finished work of His Son, Jesus Christ alone. Plus even as a believer there are times we need to repent and in fact every time we sin we need to repent.

Sodom and Gommorrah, had a big problem - they were not a population of gay people, they were straight but very evil. They conquered surrouding nations - and brutally subdued them and put them in to slavery - their cruelty - they raped women and men. They raped men not because of love, but to make those they conquered a lower class of people. It was symbolic because it made the men they raped "women" and loosing all dignity. This was so awful to a patriachal society where men rules over women as property. here was no problem in raping women because they were considered as property. But to rape men was just unforgivable.
If there was a Sodom, and Gommorah, it would be wall street! where many lost all their life savings because many of these guys were crookes. Power and wealth corrupts until the basic dignity of man is corrupted.

Here is where Jesus preached the need to repent...
    Luke 13:1-5
There were present at that season some who told Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.
And Jesus answered and said to them, "Do you suppose that these Galileans were worse sinners than all other Galileans, because they suffered such things?
I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.
Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them, do you think that they were worse sinners than all other men who dwelt in Jerusalem?
I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish."

People! Jesus himself tells us to do 2 things! 1. Love the Lord your God with all of your heart, soul, mind and strength. 2. Love your neighbor as yourself. There are NO greater commandments than these. HIS words!!! Where does it tell us to tell people they need to repent???? God tells us to love! thats it! Let God do HIS job! We do ours by showing nothing but LOVE! If more Christians would just read and obey these 2 things that Jesus tells us himself there is NOTHING greater to do..... then this world would be a better place! LOVE 360 was AMAZING! God was there and HIS love broke thru and planted many seeds! God was glorified! :)

We need to just go and do what God tells us to do, and stop worrying about what the politically correct think about it.

Bravo for I AM LOVE 360 and for the old-fashioned ministries that will also reach the lost. Whatever will win people, before it is too late, is great.

"According to a 2007 Barna study, 80 percent of non-Christians view evangelical Christianity as judgmental and hypocritical."

Hypocritical....yes if a Christians fails intentionally. Otherwise our imperfections are still there.

Judgemental....that would be conviction from the Holy Spirit. Jesus did not come to condemn, but to redeem.

But Christians do have the responsibility to watch out for and call out any goats that might try to enter in and hurt the sheep.

True Christian love also requires and acknowledges the need for repentance. Yes, Jesus ate with sinners and tax collectors, but they also repented of their sins, and turned from their wicked ways. Yes, this outreach is a good start, but those reaching out in Christian love would be remiss if they don't ask others to repent of their sin. That's a huge part of what the Gospel is all about - a lifestyle change. Free food, and a free concert won't do any good if the heart of those trying to be reached isn't changed.

The only way to win this "culture war" is by loving our "enemies!" Pickle sucking just don't work, and it's not a lot of fun, either, is it?
