Faithbook Poll Finds More People Praying in Economic Downturn

By Jenna Lyle|Christian Today Reporter

A poll by Faithbook on Facebook has found that more people are turning to God in prayer to help them through the global financial crisis.

Among the 150 people polled, more than 80 percent said they did not see the economic turmoil as a crisis, but rather as a “global financial watershed” with the potential to see a reform of the economy with a moral and social framework.

More than a quarter of respondents (28 percent) said they had prayed more and 42 percent that they had felt a positive effect from praying or meditating since the start of the global economic slump.

The results of the survey were published Tuesday by the group behind the multi-faith Faithbook page, Global Tolerance.

Usama Hasan, director of City Circle and contributor to Faithbook, commented, “In many ways, we are already in a spiritual recession. Financial wealth is worthless without spiritual wealth.”

The survey also found that the economic downturn or their own financial situation had been an issue the last time they prayed.

Simon Cohen, Managing Director of Global Tolerance, believes the Faithbook poll confirms that "the economic downturn has reached the heart of religious life."

“It is heartening that for many people, as long as our basic human needs are met, they see the financial watershed as pregnant with hope and opportunity – a refreshing perspective amid the doom and gloom headlines," he said.

Christian scientist Tony Lobl commented, “Prayer is not some kind of celestial ATM card, but it brings glimpses of God's universal and impartial love which change the one praying, calming fears and opening thought to ideas which might otherwise have been missed.”

It is God who controls the affairs of men. Most often than not the advances we have made in Science and Technology coupled with the unprecedented economic boom of the last few years make us think that we are in charge. That is a lie because we are all witnesses to the current economic downturn and all the desperate efforts by world leaders to bring things under control. Our desperate efforts suggest that we are very limited and even constrained when it comes to such gigantic mind boggling global issues and the sooner we turn to God the better. Yes mankind should reflect during such times and get closer to God. We have bitten more than we can chew. There is someone out there- GOD- who is in charge and not man.

I find it ironic that when things go bad that people turn to God, often rather quickly. When things are going good, many get caught up in the day to day activites that make up a fast paced world. Those things occupy so much of our lives, therefore they must be important (goes our line thought). But Christianity always flourishes in the face of adversity, because God gives up the things we really need to go on (strength, love, hope...). The real trick for many of us is to continue that relationship with God after the hard times are over.

God has a rescue plan in every emergency of life, whether
it is personal, national or international. The whole
world was chasing after the idol of materialism for the
last few decades, and perhaps majority of the people
thought that they don't need God to conduct their affairs. Now nobody has found a solution to this problem. Those people who predicted the gas price would
be $ 200.00/barrel, and %$ 5.00/gl in pumps are hiding somewhere in total shame for the false prediction. The
crude oil price began to plunge, even the oil producing countries can't stop the plunge by curtailing production. Nobody can stop this confusion, but only
God. So, let us seek the face of God, and Him alone
    can solve the problem.
