VATICAN CITY – Pope Benedict XVI is encouraging Catholics who get involved in politics to stay true to their church's teaching.
Benedict says it is necessary that a new generation of Catholics in politics be "coherent" with the faith they profess.
He also recommends that they act with moral rigor and work passionately for the common good.
The pope urged Vatican officials in a speech Saturday to be vigilant about the evangelical education of Catholics who get so involved in society.
Benedict recently said religion and politics should be "open to each other."
The Vatican is particularly attentive to political action about abortion, euthanasia and embryonic stem cell research.

ID, as a fellow Southern Baptist I too often wonder the same thing!
As a Southern Baptist, I am sadly reminded by one of the posts below that Carter, Gore, and Clinton claim they are in that denomination. Wonder how different the world would be if they understood and acted on the teachings of the Bible?

fg, don't feel bad we Southern Baptists have B. Clinton, Gore, and Carter who claim to be Southern Baptists!
Good point, Daniel Paul. Probably because of pro-choice Biden, who likes to tell people he's a Catholic. I pray his walk gets stronger to reflect his tenets of his faith. We've also got Pelosi, Kennedy and I think Kerry who say they're Catholic, yet don't follow the beliefs of Catholicism, especially in the area of respecting life.
Keep up God's good work Benedict XVI!
What's scary is that he found it needed to even say such a thing.
What about Catholics who do not get involved in Politics?
