Evangelist Duo Preach Gospel to 150,000 in Mexico

By Michelle A. Vu|Christian Post Reporter

The father-son team of Luis Palau and son Andrew proclaimed the Good News of Jesus Christ to 150,000 people in Southern Mexico this past weekend.

In partnership with nearly 350 local churches, the evangelists shared the Gospel in the southern state of Oaxaca, Mexico, on Nov. 12-15, according to the Luis Palau Association. A recorded 11,193 people made a decision to follow Jesus Christ during the festival.

Oaxaca state representative Daniel Gurrion hailed the event as the “largest evangelistic campaign” the region has ever seen.

Evangelist Luis Palau focused most of his evangelistic efforts on the capital city of Oaxaca, while son Andrew spent several days prior to the Oaxaca festival in the coastal city of Huatulco proclaiming the Gospel.

For Andrew, this past weekend’s event carried added significance because it was the first time an Andrew Palau festival has been held in Mexico.

But the evangelist duo did not only preach during their time in Mexico. They also helped organize social services for locals.

Working with the government of Oaxaca, Oregon-based Mission Increase Foundation, and Forward Edge International, the Luis Palau Festival helped provide 6,259 people free medical healthcare examines. The area’s most needy were given medical, dental, and eye exams free of charge.

In addition to healthcare services, the Christian ministries and the Oaxaca government are also working together on building projects for the homeless and a wide-scale feeding program for thousands of local youths.

“I have always had a heart of Mexico,” Luis Palau said. “Having lived in this beautiful country from 1968 to 1971 with my wife and kids, it is a blessing to be able to return and serve in this way.”

“To offer our encouragement and support; to share the Good News Gospel of Jesus Christ with so many in this area – I couldn’t ask for anything more,” added Palau, who is originally from Argentina. “To God alone be all the glory!”

Since 1966, Luis Palau has held nearly 50 crusades in the country, and his Spanish language radio show, “Luis Palau Responde,” can be heard throughout Mexico as well as most of Latin America.

Luis Palau’s next major international outreach will be in Guatemala City in March 2009.
