COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Bob Jones University is apologizing for racist policies that included a one-time ban on interracial dating and its unwillingness to admit black students until 1971.
In a statement posted Thursday on its Web site, the fundamentalist Christian school founded in 1927 in northwestern South Carolina says its rules on race were shaped by culture instead of the Bible.
The university says president Stephen Jones decided to issue the apology because he still receives questions about the school's views on race.
The school, which has about 5,000 students, banned interracial dating until 2000.
President George W. Bush was criticized in 2000 for a campaign speech at the school while the interracial dating ban was in place.

Being human means making mistakes, being a Christian means admitting mistakes and asking for forgiveness. Fortunately for mankind, God is far more forgiving than man.
I agree with indochristian, this sounds very much like a genocidal beginning. If it were any group but Christians, it would probably rate much more media attention. But the US media, while generally avoiding open hostility towards Christianity, will avoid most stories that generate sympathy for the plight of Christians. They would probably explain it as not wanting to stir up hatred against Hindus in America.
Ethnic Cleansing (GENOCIDE) will occur in India shortly. The BJP in lieu with the Vishwa Hindi Parishad and their terrorist arm , the Bajrang Dal have devised a master plan for extermination of Christians in INDIA. They have been running a census and obtaining records from the Ration Card Scheme to identify Christian families and exterminate them. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad operates freely in the US, Australia, Canada, UK and so the Christians in these countries are afraid to confront them.
in some ways i agree with mathew but really i think it would be better for all concerned for a place like BJU to go ahead a fold up. the curse runs too deep and there are better schools all around it. still, i thank them for confessing. (the faculty and student skull measurements should still be measured, tho. where are the phenologists when we really need them?)
These folks are in our back yard so to speak. My wife works about 5 miles from their main gate. This is a BIG thing for around here. It is an amazing statement for our area of the country.
God will honor any honest confession. I was graduated
from another seminary which followed the pattern of
Bob Joes University, and I feel very sad to see that once
crowded place of education with closed dormitories, and
vacant rooms. We Christian may jump ahead of others to
judge the non-Christian religions based on traditions
and culture, but we have failed miserably to see our
shortcomings of blindly following the culture of
segregation. God bless the Bob Joes University for
finding the truth at last, and repenting about it.
wbmoore,
Your wife will be in my prayers. . . .
(Will wonders never cease.....)
Apparently, someone has a problem with asking the Lord for healing . . . I pray that this person will have someone praying for them in their hour of need . . .
my wife an i visited bob jones u. once. a phrenologist could have a field day examining the skulls of the throwbacks on that campus. but i digress..... yesterday my son asked me, "What do you call a black man flying an airplane?

Answer: "A pilot, you racist!!!"
wb, I can think of a couple of posters who would be that immature.
huh. I just noticed someone gave my post about having taken my wife to visit her family and her having back surgery a thumbs down, as well as believer's prayer for my family a thumbs down. will wonders never cease.....
Online4Him,
Thanks! God had granted me peace about the surgery. I wasn't even worried when her pain was not under control, as I knew it would be controlled soon, but not she has a fever. THIS worries me. I pray the fever goes away and she continues to heal and is able to return home in a couple of days.
wbmoore,
Way to go Mr. Mom; I pray that your wife has a complete and speedy recovery . . .
believer, thanks. same to you.
wb, said a prayer for your wife as well as you and your kids, hope her recovery is as pain-free as possible and I'm looking forward to having you back on board when you can. Continue to be blessed as you serve Him, believer
Hey believer. We took a trip for my wife to visit her folks before her back surgery. Now that she's had it, I'm taking care of the kids (homeschooling) and working from home. I haven't been online much, and the little I have been, I've not posted much. I'm trying to avoid getting into conversations because I think it unfair to make a statement that people will challenge if I am unwilling to stand by what I say.
wb, what's going on and are you going to be back for a while?
good.
