GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala – The head of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Malaysia is among three people killed in a boat accident on a Guatemalan lake.
Bishop Julius Paul had attended a church conference in Guatemala and was visiting Lake Atitlan as a tourist. He drowned along with a Frenchman and a Guatemalan when the boat they were traveling in sank. Three others are missing after the Nov. 22 accident.
The boat was carrying 13 people between the towns of Santiago Atitlan and Panajachel.
The 30-year-old boat operator has been taken into custody for questioning.
Alfredo Chinchilla, Malaysia's honorary consul general in Guatemala, confirmed Paul's death on Monday.
Thousands of tourists visit Lake Atitlan each year.
