Christians Urge Obama to Make Mideast Peace a Priority

By Ethan Cole|Christian Post Reporter

Christian leaders across denominational lines are signing onto an ecumenical letter that urges President-elect Barack Obama to make Israel-Palestinian peace a priority in his incoming administration.

“The conflict between Israelis and Palestinians has gone on for too long. It has caused untold suffering for both sides, created economic hardships, and provided a rallying cry for extremists,” the letter signed by 40 U.S. Christian leaders read.

“As people of faith and hope, we believe peace is possible,” it stated. “Majorities of both Israelis and Palestinians continue to support a negotiated solution based on two secure and sovereign states as the best way to end this tragic conflict.”

Signers of the letter call on Obama to make lasting Mideast peace a top agenda during his first year in office, and for the administration to “provide sustained, high-level diplomatic leadership toward the clear goal” of establishing a viable Palestinian state alongside a secure Israel.

"Without active U.S. engagement, political inertia and perpetuation of the unbearable status quo will make achievement of a two-state solution increasingly difficult," the 40 U.S. Christian leaders wrote in the letter. "Moreover, we are concerned about the negative impact a further delay will have on the Christian community in the Holy Land, whose numbers continue to decline."

Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori of The Episcopal Church commented: "We believe the United States has the political ability to keep the parties at the peace table.”

“We urge the President-elect to mobilize the will to endure the heat at that table in order to find the light for which the world yearns. The lives of thousands depend on it."

Jefferts Schori was joined by leaders of the Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant and Evangelical traditions in calling Obama to pursue a two-state solution.

Signers thus far include the Rev. Mark S. Hanson, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America; Dr. Joel C. Hunter, senior pastor of Northland Church in Florida and a member of the executive committee of the National Association of Evangelicals; Ronald J. Sider, president of Evangelicals for Social Action; Richard Stearns; president of World Vision; John L. McCullough, executive director of Church World Service; Richard J. Mouw, president of Fuller Theological Seminary; and David Neff, editor-in-chief of Christianity Today.

The letter is still being circulated around the country and leaders are encouraged to add their names to it. A letter with all the signatures will be delivered to Obama during his inauguration next year.

American peace deals between Israel and Jihadist always demand more land to be given up. In the past the Israeli government would not be giving too much heed to these outrageous demands.

But lately, we saw that since the incredible lost in Lebanon 2006 war to the Hezbollah, Kadimah is ready to give up more and more land in exchange for peace. To what extend? West Jerusalem? Beersheba? And have we seen any reduction in the jihadist attack? None whatsoever.

This government is too weak and their military intelligent is too narrow. People are waiting for the next Israeli administration to clean this mess and straighten all Kadimah problem right away. That administration shall be the Labor government lead by Ehud Barak plus the right people leading IDF and AMAN.

Well, Ethan we all want peace in the middle east and we are told to pray for the peace of Israel. But if you know the story, then how do you expect lasting peace to come from man's hand by way of this ecumenical letter or any other tactic or strategy of man's devising?

Christ made it clear how peace will be achieved and it is not through a "christian" movement that has watered down the Gospelof Christ to gain adherents and to make the Gospel palatable for 'everyone', charging in with their two cents worth.

The best you are going to get is a seven year peace agreement that the anti-christ will break at the 3 1/2 year mark. Are you aware of this?

Do they know the story or even read the Book?

Either that or they don't really believe the book!

This letter is very fitting during the Advent season. I signed onto this letter and would encourage others to add their names to this call for Mideast peace at http://www.cmep.org/letter

The article began with; The conflict between Israelis and Palestinians has gone on for too
    long.

    This from the Christian leaders?

Do they know the story or even read the Book?

This was as far as I got reading the article and then the word "ecumenical" caught my eye and
    that did it for me.

Perhaps a nice 7 year treaty will suit the christian leaders in the ecumenical movement?

Peace within and among the diverse people is significantly beautiful achievement. Unfortunately, in the past, people fought and killed each other exhausting their resources in order to achieve peace as per their terms. Such a kind of peace could not be considered a permanent solution as it brews simmering problems paving for other conflicts. In order to achieve peace, fear should be eradicated, love should be inculcated and respect for every individual shall be maintained.

A comprehensive peace is only possible when the parties concerned understand the grievances of each other and respectfully reach to peace deals by committing to a dignifying agreement for all. In my short life, I have experienced and seen conflicts which seemed irresolvable. But human vision should not succumb to the evils of this world which are against peace; struggle for peace is the right religion which is shared by all the religions of the world.

Yehudi Menuhin once said that "Peace may sound simple - one beautiful word - but it requires everything we have, every quality, every strength, every dream, and every high ideal". Almighty The-God is forgiving by His Nature; let us forgive others so that our mission gets divine blessings to achieve peace. It is time to transform existing arms race between Israel and Palestinian nations into Peace Race through forgiveness. In order to achieve peace in Palestine let us give the following to Palestinians:-

The first matter after the oath of allegiance to God is the establishment of Justice, and then comes humanitarian assistance to the needy that are near you and by forbidding evils, viciousness and transgression. The humanitarian assistance shall include access to income, ensured health program, mandatory educational program and guaranteed housing for all Palestinians. Finally they should be given authority to preserve their identity as a nation; sovereign nation next to israel.

Same old liberal pacifist names. Move along, folks, because here's nothing new to see here.

Peace is not the absence of violence but rather the removal of the need for it.
