Hollywood Celebrities Mock Christians in Anti-Prop. 8 Video

By Katherine T. Phan|Christian Post Reporter

Opponents of the California same-sex marriage ban have released a Web video satire entitled "Prop 8: The Musical" that mocks Christians as hatemongers and Jesus as a Bible critic.

The three-minute video was posted last Wednesday on FunnyOrDie.com, a website founded by comedian Will Ferrell, and is gaining viral video status with over 2.4 million views.

A star-studded cast, which includes Jack Black, Neil Patrick Harris, John C. Reilly, Andy Richter, Maya Rudolph, Margaret Cho, Rashida Jones and others, is featured in the low-budget musical parody conceived by the composer of "Hairspray," Marc Shaiman, who is openly gay.

The video opens with a colorfully dressed bunch, which includes a hippie Rudolph and a tattooed Cho, singing and celebrating a "new Obama day" and "happy days for the gays" against a beach backdrop.

Then enters a black-clad Reilly and another actress with a scheme to "spread some hate and put it in the Constitution." They crash the beach party and unscroll a bill reading: "Prop. 8."

A group dressed in black Sunday clothes, apparently portraying Christians, joins Reilly in chorus to plead with the audience to listen to their warning that the other group will "teach kids about sodomy."

The colorful group calls the warning a "lie," to which the Prop. 8-supporting Christians respond: "But it works." The two groups continue to argue, with the first group claiming their "love is not a sin," while the Christian group remarks that "the Bible says it so."

Jesus, played by Black, intervenes in the debate by saying, "The Bible says a lot of things, you know?" The Christian group asks whether the Bible considers gays "an abomination."

But Jesus dismisses the Bible reference, saying that "Leviticus also says shellfish is an abomination" and that the "Bible says a lot of interesting things like you can stone your wife or sell your daughter into slavery."

When the Christians say they "ignore those verses," Jesus scolds them for picking and choosing. Jesus reminds them that the nation was built on the separation of church and state before his good-bye parting, "See ya later sinners!"

Harris has better luck convincing the Christians to oppose Proposition 8 by telling them that "gay marriages will save the economy." According to Harris, "there's money to be made" from the gay weddings to lawyers for gay divorces. After he points at the "millions lost in all your disapproving," the Christians admit they have been "such fools."

While some internet bloggers have found the video to be "funny" and "hilarious," many Christians aren't laughing at the Hollywood parody.

"It is more of the anti-religious bigotry for which this industry, supposedly so devoted to 'tolerance,' has become famous," L. Brent Bozell III, founder of Media Research Center, a conservative media watchdog group, said in a recent opinion piece.

Bozel took issue with Shaiman's portrayal of a "phony-baloney Jesus" who seems to be quoting from an Obama speech in 2006 that suggested Christian conservatives weren't reading their Leviticus, he said.

"But neither Obama nor Shaiman will admit in the Bible there is also St. Peter’s vision in the Acts of the Apostles, where he’s told to abandon the idea of clean and unclean foods," said Bozel. "Only someone utterly ignorant would make a video where Jesus descends in a vision to humanity only to sound like a lawyer for the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union)." Continue »

This verse stated by Christ confirms everything that the Lord had ordained for man and woman from the beginning of creation.

Jesus was asked a question in the book of Matthew 19:3 concerning whether it was lawful for a man to leave his wife for any reason? Jesus replied that He who made them male and female, and that is a reason a man shall leave his mother and father and be joined to his wife and the two shall become one flesh.

"Maybe this is a little off the trail, but Jesus said something about how the world would hate those who followed him."

Not off the trail at all. It's an accurate observation. The problem comes in when people want the acceptance of man instead of God. Still, we can keep trying to help people understand the gospel. Besides, this site is better than chess and it has more players....

  • Fri Dec 12, 2008 5:29 pm Agree: 1   Disagree: 0

Maybe this is a little off the trail, but Jesus said something about how the world would hate those who followed him. We've been pretty lucky here in the U.S., but things have been shifting. I don't hate practicing homosexuals, but I do hate their behavior, as God hates their behavior. It is a sex addiction that destroys them and those who are exposed to it. It's just like I hate illegal drugs that ensnare people and destroy their lives. I darn well want a law against drugs. I don't hate those who are trapped in their drug addiction, just like I don't hate those caught up in a homosexual sex addiction. There's no hate coming from me. The hate is with those who reject God and those who follow Him. I'm not sure how to communicate this more accurately.

"Why is everyone so obsessed with what other people do when they're naked?"

Who you really are is reflected in what you do in private. A person who would cheat on their taxes would have no problem cheating in other areas given a reason.

The whole pro-gay agenda is about being accepted. Why are they so concerned with what we think? Why do they want to force us to accept what the Bible calls sin? I was on the phone with a friend who is a psycologist who said even if you are not trained and are not knowledgeable about gay issues you still cannot refer a gay person to someone else because you can get sued. I would want someone with a clue what's up there if I wanted them to mess with my head! It's like asking a family doctor to do heart surgery. How nutzy of me would that be?

yes. so is hate crimes. i've read a couple articles on here that show that. the judicial branch removed a Christian ad that condemned homosexuality, but were alright with an atheist sign that condemned Christianity. go figure.

    Dear Diary,

(I always wanted to write that...)

So, right! Can you just imagine the cry of "Hate Crime" should the shoe be on the other foot and Christians made a video similar to this one to mock homosexuals!

Have you noticed TOLERANCE is a ONE-WAY Street?

"If a similar mocking video had been made of Mohammed, would it have been considered a hate crime? Why is it ok to mock only the Christian religion?"

Cause if we're mocked, we're not gonna take a gun to their heads. Not to make waves or anything, but Muslims in their own countries are welcome to shoot homosexuals. We haven't done that recently, therefore, we are free game. Sad but true. :/

"Plus homosexual acts do contribute to STDs, but I'll admit it's a relatively small percentage"

    HUH? What IS AIDS?

The one infectious and deadly disease granted Human rights because of the "minority' status of gays. Although terribly politically incorrect to pont out that this disease first came about from male homosexual anal sex; noticed by clinicians in NY, San Francisco and LA in June of 1981.

Since then it moved to intravenious drug users because it is blood borne and then onto women.

Homosexual sex brought about the deadliest of STD's!

"Homophobic Christians whine and complain about some musical... "

Bibliophobic pro-homosexual agenda folks complain because the majority of people in this country want to keep marriage between one man and one woman. My guess is if the Bibliophobs would just be quite and go away then the Christian folks wouldn't be complaining about a musical.

    Proverbs 9:7

Proposition 8, which amended the California Constitution to define marriage as between a man and a woman, was approved in November by 52 percent of California voters. The measure's passage overturned the May decision by the California Supreme Court, which ruled 4-3 to allow gay marriages.

And all Californians should show respect to that result and not degrade themselves into ridiculous mockers such as Black et al

"Please explain how prohibiting gays from marriage is going to decrease STD's. I don't understand your reasoning. "

Oh snap! Now that I read it I wasn't clear, was I? Alright. What I was trying to say was people's sex lives are kinda our business. If I want to marry someone, I like to know if they got STDs or if they're more likely to seduce me, just stuff like that. I just saw "obsession with other people's sex lives" being thrown out so I want to say, yes, it is our business. Plus I didn't get why you said there was an obsession in the first place; we need to know things first about another person in order to cope with him/her.

Plus homosexual acts do contribute to STDs, but I'll admit it's a relatively small percentage. The point I was trying to make is that stuff like that IS important.

Yeah, if they're trying to gain sympathy, it didn't work. At least not on me. :/

Down here in Florida, Amendment 2 passed and we had little to none gays using violence to get their way. They at least accepted it with grace, like good sports. Hmm...California sound a bit angry to me. Plus no one here is a homophobe. If that's true, then it will be an actual condition where we'd can't go out of our homes because we're afraid everyone is gay. That's what a true phobia is, something that impairs us from living correctly.

"Why is everyone so obsessed with what other people do when they're naked? This is a sick obsession, and you should be ashamed."

I thought we were talking about marriage...how did we get to sex? *looks down at discipledokie* Oh...ok...would never think that we're obsessed with other people's sex lives because of that. He was just defining what homosexuality is. And let's just say it sorta is our business since the spread of STDs is pretty rampant. >>did you notice that the actors involved aren't like big name actors?<<

    Jester! Jack Black! D:

I digress, on to the issues.

There's one point I like to agree on the video. Us Christians are in danger of picking and choosing. That aside, even if we're choosing it, it still there in black and white.

"The best solution that I have heard is that the state should give everyone a domestic partnership."

Totally agree. This is more fair and balanced. If I'm living with a roommate, I want those benefits. Why should I be gay and be in love with my roommate in order to recieve these benefits?

Which makes me wonder what would happen if I wore a "Straight Pride" badge. Heterosexual marriage is celebration worthy. I don't say nothing about homosexual, but I did ask a friend in California about that and he told me I'd get shot. o_o

"This the exact kind of stupidity that intolerance boils down to. Homophobic Christians whine and complain about some musical... yet they will never feel the effects of having their marriage yanked away by strangers."

blue1018. I never did have any chance where marriage was taken from me but I do know what it feels like when shelter and food was taken from me, with just a few moments ago my Grandpa died. I'd feel a little more sorry for the homosexuals but it seems to me they're not as helpless as they want to portray themselves against the big bad Christians. They got high-paying jobs (most of them) because most of them have good social skills. Also they made that blacklist that made quite a few people resign. To me, it's like they're saying "If you take away marriage from us, we'll take away your jobs." Yeah, if they’re trying to gain sympathy, it didn’t work. At least for me.

    wwfsmd,

A distinction here; I don't believe the people here are 'obsessively concerned' with what a small percentage of naked people do in the bedroom...God IS.

    Your argument is with God.

And He may be "obsessed" (your word) with it because it DEFILES the purpose and order of His creation.

To Others: Is there not a co-habitation state law in CA already covering the recognition of the same 'rights'for co-habitation as legaly marrieds? I thought the Act of 2003 that most states adapted would also be the law of the land in CA as well?

Why is everyone so obsessed with what other people do when they're naked? This is a sick obsession, and you should be ashamed. Gay people do not want to teach children to be gay. That's simply ignorant fear-mongering. If a gay person being married destroys what your marriage means to you, then your marriage was worthless from the start. Maybe if you were happier, you wouldn't be so obsessed with other people's sex lives.

First off, it wasn't just a bunch of christians that voted for prop 8. It was a bunch of straight married people who don't want to change the marraige laws. There are not enough christians to approve it by themselves. Now on the other side, it is not only Gays who are in need of something to protect their relationship under family law. There are older people who have no one else and live with a friend to help take care of each other.( by the way they love each other without sex. love doesnt make a person gay, sex does.) I can understand the need for some type of law to give these people and gay people the right to care for and protect each other, but why does it have to infringe on the sanctidy of marraige. Call it anything else.

why should the state give anyone a domestic parternship? Of what benefit is it to the state? Now a legal union between one man and one woman does benefit the state because it creates the ideal unit for the rearing of children. Whether or not a couple has children doesn't negate this ideal.

The most intolerant people on this page are always those who are attacking Christians. On the other hand, Christians just seem to state their Biblical beliefs, which yes, are offensive to those trapped in unbelief. In essence, God's commands and laws are offensive to those who do not allow their belief system to be informed by His Holy Word.
