Obama Hopes to Reboot US Image among Muslims

By Associated Press Writer|Jennifer Loven

WASHINGTON – President-elect Barack Obama says he will try to "reboot America's image" among the world's Muslims and will follow tradition by using his entire name — Barack Hussein Obama — in his swearing-in ceremony.

President-elect Barack Obama speaks during a news conference in Chicago, Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008.

The U.S. image globally has taken a deep hit during President George W. Bush's two terms in office, primarily because of opposition to the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, harsh interrogation of prisoners, the indefinite detention of terrorist suspects at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and mistreatment of inmates at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.

Obama promised during his campaign that one of his top priorities would be to work to repair America's reputation worldwide, and that one element of that effort would be a speech delivered in a Muslim capital.

He pledged anew to give such a speech, though he declined to say whether it would happen during his first year in office.

"It's something I intend to follow through on," Obama said in an interview published Wednesday in the Chicago Tribune and the Los Angeles Times. "We've got a unique opportunity to reboot America's image around the world and also in the Muslim world in particular. So we need to take advantage of that."

Obama said his message would be twofold: that his administration will be unyielding in stamping out terrorist extremism but also "unrelenting in our desire to create a relationship of mutual respect and partnership with countries."

"I think the world is ready for that message," he said in the interview, conducted Tuesday.

During the campaign, Obama repeatedly faced questions about whether he is a Muslim, particularly in whisper campaigns that noted his middle name, that his father is Kenyan, and that he lived for a time as a child in Indonesia. Obama is a practicing Christian.

Asked if he would drop his middle name during his inauguration on Jan. 20, the president-elect said he would not.

"The tradition is that they use all three names and I will follow the tradition, not trying to make a statement on way or another," he said.

Obama also talked about the spiritual support he sought during his White House bid, particularly since he and his family left Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ after inflammatory comments by its pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, became a campaign issue.

Obama said he set up a "sort of prayer circle across the country" of pastors who would pray for him every morning on a conference call. Obama said he sometimes joined the call, which involved leaders from various Christian denominations and other religious faiths.

"I'm not even sure that all of them voted for me," Obama said. "But they were willing to pray for me, and that's something that was wonderful."

On other topics:

_Obama would not put a timetable on issues important to organized labor, what he called his promise to "put an end to the kinds of barriers and roadblocks that are in the way of workers legitimately coming together in order to form a union and bargain collectively." Among other things, he has promised support for a card-check system for unions trying to organize a new workplace and for adding labor and environmental protections to the North American Free Trade Agreement. "I don't want to anticipate right now what sequences will be on these issues," Obama said.

_The man about to be the nation's first black president said he will make enforcing civil rights laws and making the criminal justice system color-blind top priorities for his administration. The Justice Department's Civil Rights Division "over the last eight years has had a lot of problems and really declining morale," he said.

_Obama said he, his wife Michelle and their two young daughters will make frequent visits during his presidency back to their home in Chicago, perhaps as often as every six weeks. "My Kennebunkport is on the South Side of Chicago," he said. "Our friends are here. Our family is here. And so we are going to try to come back here as often as possible."

Melanie- The point is not whether he is a Muslim or Christian but Obama wants credibility with the Muslims, that's why he wants to use his middle name (which is a Muslim name) when he swears in.

IF he is a Chistian, he won't have credibility with the Arabs although I have read that the Arab/Muslim world welcomes the choice of Obama as US president.

Again, I say, whether Muslim or Christian, the issue has been obscured and it's very interesting that the American voters voted into highest office, just 7 years after 9-11, a man with (at least) a Muslim name...and the choice pleases our enemy.

Oh baloney. I thought he wasn't Muslim.

"Another key issue is that NO Mulsim is going to be OK with gay. If Obama promotes gay rights in this country he will have no credibility with the Muslim countries."

No only that, DP, if Obama is a Christian the Muslims would have to kill him as an Infidel and an Apostate.

"Americans have enough intelligence to elect a man and look beyond any ill-conceived notions regarding his name..." Amazing.

Has anyone questioned the fact that of all the people we could have voted into the highest office in America AFTER THE 2001 ISLAMIC TERRORISTS ATTACK OF 9-11 why would we vote a man into that office that has a Muslim name?

Intelligence? Hardly. Short memory? Possibly. Suicidal tendency; most assuredly.

I've heard it said that great civilizations don't just die away...they commit suicide.

Wow! I was under the impression that America's rep had been taking a beating for decades in Muslim countries. I lived in one when I was a young teen and they thought America was a morally declining country.

Another key issue is that NO Mulsim is going to be OK with gay. If Obama promotes gay rights in this country he will have no credibility with the Muslim countries.

    Cameron, are you a muslim?

  • Thu Dec 11, 2008 5:26 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

Yes, Mr Barack Hussein Obama has given a lot of hope to downtrodden Muslims all over the world though he is not a Muslim. I would like to see in Obama a sense of biblical wisdom with flavour of Father Abraham Lincoln.

USA need to emerge from the evils of the past and establish itself as a modest superpower which terrorists fear and friends revere. Wait a minute, what about Russian federation which is having the blood spill in Georgia. We have a new chapter in world politics: State terrorism.

Could Russia be allowed to terrorise former Soviet bloc countries. Could India be allowed to terrorise Kashmir without a right of self-determination. Could China be allowed to digest Tibet for ever. Could Somalia be allowed to torpedo passing ships without a cost. Such are the foreign policy tests for Mr. Barack H. Obama. I sincerely wish him my appreciation and goodluck.

    chicago,

The question is not WHETHER religion (aka worldview) influences the public sphere, but WHICH one will influence it. If Christianity is really true, then why should it not inform our public policy?

  • Thu Dec 11, 2008 12:51 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 2

I think it's so ironic that many of you want religion in the public sphere (prayer in public schools, the Bible influencing laws pertaining to marriage, etc) yet you all seem sure that Sharia law will become influential in the US.
If that is so, then it would seem that many of you would want to keep religious influence OUT of the public sphere.

Bottom line: Be careful of what you wish for. If you want religion to influence our laws, then you should also be ready for your grandchildren to be living under Sharia law.

Why all the sudden is he so insistent on using his full name. I recall republicans getting reemed for using it during the elections. All I can say is that Obama has shown his fruits and I believe they've been planted in Muslim soil.

I still don't trust this guy and I really can't tell what he's up to with all his appointees and changing of policies.

  • Thu Dec 11, 2008 12:33 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

Just to be clear, the issue that Islam has with the USA is not the President's middle name. It is a bit more substantial:
    * Get out of the middle east; we consider all of it our land.
    * Don't say a word when ALL of the terrorist activities today are committed by Muslims
    * Stop supporting Israel so we can get back to annihilating the country
    * Let us have sharia law anywhere there are Muslims instead of the law of the land; remember, we consider sharia law superior to any other and Islam is a theocracy.

That's the real issue. He's just inviting more concessions from those who give none in return. Sorry if this one's a bit heated, but read the headlines for 2008...

  • Thu Dec 11, 2008 12:28 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

I think you're right Chris, we have a few Muslims in our Government, they have already been pushing for Sharia law to be implimented in Canada. You're country is next...

  • Thu Dec 11, 2008 12:11 pm Agree: 2   Disagree: 0

First this, then the Koran will be used in swearing in ceremonies, then the Bible won't be referenced at all, God will be taken out of the pledge and SHARIA law is next.

I hope what a I wrote never comes to pass.

    JESUS IS THE ONLY WAY!

Welcome to the new Great Britain. If Obama isn't trying to make a statement by using all three names, then what's the point in using all three names?

He claims to be Christian but asks religious leaders of other faiths to pray for him? How can his Christian faith be taken seriously. Either Obama doesn't distinguish an obvious difference between the Christian God and the God of other religious faiths or he's more concerned about being tolerant and relativistic to gain popularity for his own purposes.

Christian??? Either he isn't or he is and is compromising his religious integrity. Neither are characteristics of the Christian God.

  • Thu Dec 11, 2008 10:04 am Agree: 2   Disagree: 6

I don't know why so many people tried to make his middle name an issue. I think it says a lot that Americans have enough intelligence to elect a man and look beyond any ill-conceived notions regarding his name.
At this point, I'm sure most nations would much rather prefer that we have a president with the middle name of 'Hussein' than one with the middle name of 'Walker'.

This is what you get when you depend and trust more on government that God. The only thing that will change the mind of Muslims about the USA is for us to become another Muslim country.
