Poll: Belief in UFOs Matches Belief in OT, NT as Word of God

By Eric Young|Christian Post Reporter

A little more than a third of Americans believe all the text in the Old Testament or all the text in the New Testament represent the Word of God, according to the results of a newly released poll.

In this image released by 20th Century Fox, a giant sphere from another world is shown descending on New York's Central Park in a scene from 'The Day the Earth Stood Still.'

That’s about the same as the percentage of people who believe in UFOs (36 percent) and less than the amount of people who believe in ghosts (44 percent), Harris Interactive found through its online survey.

Notably, however, 55 percent of those surveyed affirmed their belief that all or most of the Word of God is represented in the Old Testament and 54 percent for the New Testament. Furthermore, 80 percent were found to believe in God and 71 percent that Jesus is God or the Son of God.

“That very large majorities of the American public believe in God, miracles, the survival of the soul after death, the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the Virgin birth will come as no great surprise,” staff at Harris Interactive stated. “What may be more surprising is that substantial minorities believe in ghosts, UFOs, witches, astrology, and the belief that they themselves were once other people.”

According to the poll, 44 percent of Americans believe in ghosts, 36 in UFOs, 31 in witches, 31 in astrology, and 24 in reincarnation.

Among churchgoers, the numbers were not so different. Of those who attended religious services at least weekly, 34 percent said they believe in witches, 28 in astrology, 26 in UFOs, and 18 in reincarnation.

Overall, Catholics were more likely to believe in each of the above than Protestants.

Catholics were also much more likely than Protestants to believe in Darwin’s theory of evolution (52 percent to 32 percent) and a little less likely to believe in creationism (46 percent to 54 percent).

Other notably figures recorded by Harris Interactive include the percentage of Americans who believe in angels (71 percent), survival of the soul after death (68 percent), Hell (62 percent), the Virgin birth (61 percent), the devil (59 percent), and Darwin's theory of evolution (47 percent).

<<If you were God would you spend your time trying to explain the universe to us?>>

If I were God, I would think I'd have better things to do than spend a lot of time concerned about a little speck of a planet in a galaxy made up of billions of stars in a universe made up of billions of galaxies. I'd be out cruising around the vast expanse of the cosmos taking in the view.

Poll numbers are merely indicators of a publics thoughts and feelings about a subject matter. They cannot be used to validate a persons position. In fact just before God sent divine judgment he gave people the opportunity to repent or exodus the place of sin. In many instances only a few people survived and the majority became no more. We can looking the archaeological record and see how advanced ancient cultures just completely disappeared. Sodom and Gommorah, Easter Island, and the ancient world of Noah. The majority are not always right or correct in God's eyes. The gospel is the good news message of Christ. As Charles Spurgeon said

"Have you no concern for others to be saved? - If not, then you're not saved yourself; be sure of that." - Charles Spurgeon

America will corrupt and be destroyed from the inside out unless those claim to be a follower of Christ are putting feet to their faith. We must get humanism out of the church.

    Muggles,

Me thinks my guess at your meaning was a lot, uh, cleaner? than the reality, hmmmm. My cheeks are red, serves me right for second guessing. Never watched that show. Think I'll just stick with Santa :-)

... Funny as hell ... Hmmm. I knew I was sorry for posting that, and I've already asked the Lord's forgiveness. I'd rather not be THAT funny.

Daniel Paul, GMG, et al. Sorry about that. After GMG posted her Santa ref, my twisted back-slidden mind just had to top it. It's a character reference from a show on Comedy Central I don't really watch any more, and sometimes my impulse thoughts get away from me.

    Daniel Paul,

No, you don't want to know about Mr. Hanky. I'd spare you from that one.

    Muggleborn,

That was funny as hell, though.

    Schumacr,

The word "belief" is used in many different senses. In the religious sense, however, my answer is this:

    We shouldn't believe in anything.

Belief, in this sense, is faith: assuming something is true without any reason for doing so, such as a belief in a god or an invincible plate of spaghetti. We should think rather than believe.

ww, the late Larry Norman said in one of his songs that if there is life on other planets then Christ has been there to die for them too. Can we prove aliens exist or not, perhaps one day we will, but let us not leave satan out of the equation either, one of his major goals is to take the focus off of Christ in order that as few people as possible will be saved, so if getting people to buy into aliens can do that, well say hello to alien sightings courtesy of satan and his demons.

"I had a recent encounter with Mr. Hanky,"

You lost me. Do I want the explaination?

"Why should anyone believe anything at all?

Give me your criteria and methodology for belief and we can continue. "

OK the rest of you. Anyone understand how "I think therefore I am" came into existance?

    "You can't disprove aliens."

A basic theological foundation of Christianity is that only God has always existed. Yet, there are other life-forms mentioned as being in heaven. Where did they come from? Obviously, God has created other life-forms. When and where isn't told to us. Why? Our little planet has trouble with not eating one piece of fruit, 10 simple rules, and loving our neighbor as ourselves. If you were God would you spend your time trying to explain the universe to us?

wwfsmd, and the rest of you:

Answer from an apologist (in the form of a question) - Let's kick it up a level and answer the question:

Why should anyone believe anything at all?

Give me your criteria and methodology for belief and we can continue.

I had a recent encounter with Mr. Hanky, yesterday.

    And then again, this morning!!!

Or Santa Claus. There are many REALLY recent personal accounts of close encounters with Santa Claus!!

    Or the Loch Ness monster.

    Or bigfoot.

  • Fri Dec 12, 2008 12:21 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

    Question for the apologists:

You can't disprove aliens. There are more recent personal accounts of close encounters with aliens than there are with talking snakes or burning bushes. There are photos. This is much greater evidence than is presented for the veracity of the bible. Why shouldn't Christians believe in UFO's?

I've always found the terms "scientific" and "polls" really shouldn't be used in the same sentence.

  • Thu Dec 11, 2008 5:46 pm Agree: 3   Disagree: 3

The "interactive" polls in general had the least credence in the last election. They are considerably less "scientific" then normal polls. That said, these are encouraging numbers, as it indicates the highest percentage yet of disbelief in God and superstition in general. Go Harris!
