A vast majority of Americans still say âMerry Christmasâ instead of the more politically correct greeting âHappy Holidays,â a recent poll shows.
More than three out of four Americans (77 percent) say they greet with âMerry Christmas,â according to a Fox News poll taken Dec. 9-10. And 21 percent say they feel obligated to say âHappy Holidays,â a more inclusive greeting that can also apply to Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and other celebrations.
âI feel better when someone greets me in a store with âMerry Christmasâ because Christmas is about the birth of our Savior Jesus,â said Steve Krotoski, who leads Pray Daily America â a ministry that prays for the country everyday.
âWithout Jesus, people have no hope and are dead in sin,â he added. âThe true meaning of Christmas is important.â
Regular churchgoers (82 percent), rural Americans (83 percent), and Republicans (87 percent) are the most likely to say âMerry Christmas,â the poll found.
The groups most likely to say they feel pressured to use a generic âHappy Holidaysâ greeting are Democrats (28 percent), urbanites (28 percent) and Northeasterns (25 percent).
Results from the Fox news poll are comparable to a survey by The Pew Research Center for the People & the Press in 2005.
In the Pew survey, most Americans (60 percent) said they prefer that stores and businesses greet customers by saying âMerry Christmas.â Only one-in-four (23 percent) preferred the use of terms such as âHappy Holidaysâ and âSeasonâs Greetings,â while 17 percent of respondents said they do not care which greeting is used.
The Pew survey also found that a large majority of Americans (83 percent) said displays of Christmas symbols should be allowed in public places. But less than half (44 percent) said they approve of Christmas symbols being displayed alone, without Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and other holiday symbols.

Festivus Pole LOL, Note to self, put up a Festivus Pole on the Winter Solstice. Put it up every year until there is no more mention of this war on Christmas silliness. People where saying happy holidays, seasons greeting before there was a concept of political correctness.
Prophet: Actually, I am not kidding. I really have a Festivus Pole and set it up every holiday season.
It's strictly there for comedic effect.
Surely this point has been made before on this site: The Puritans outlawed "the Mass of Christ," or "Christmas," partly for all the debauchery that occurred during the holiday and partly because of the Roman overtones of the name. One of Americans' greatest weaknesses is out short memory. (And one of our greatest strengths is our short memory).
Merry Christmas
Festivus? God I hope you're kidding.
I'm glad to see even the pagans say "Happy Holy Days."
Merry Christmas!!
Even though I'm a Christian, I say Happy Holidays, not because it includes other religious holidays, but secular holidays as well.
The holiday season includes everything from Thanksgiving through New Years. And when I lived in Canada, that also included Boxing Day (Dec 26) which is huge up there.
My faith is strong enough that I don't get bent out of shape over "Happy Holidays."
Oh, and I also, I have a Festivus Pole and celebrate Festivus on Dec 23, so there's that.
Today happens to be Christmas, so I'll say Merry Christmas to all.
You mean to say that political correctness isn't all that contagious? Thanks be to God!
For those who like some meaning behind the holidays they celebrate, Merry Christmas.
Happy Holidays, everyone! May God bless you no matter where you're at in life.
