400 Dress as Jesus to Put Christ Back in Christmas

By Associated Press Writer|Heather Hollingsworth

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Dressed in flowing robes and thorny crowns, about 400 churchgoers promised their pastor they'd dress like Jesus as a hard-to-miss reminder of the holiday's religious roots.

Shawn Johnston of Kansas City, Kan. browses a newspaper while having a cappuccino at Homer's Coffee House in Overland Park, Kan on Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008. The member of Praise Chapel Christian Fellowship starting dressing as Jesus about two weeks ago to 'show people what Christmas is all about.' Many members of the congregation have been doing the same now since Thursday, Dec. 18.

Members of Praise Chapel Christian Fellowship began showing up that way last week at jobs, shopping malls and restaurants. The demonstration wrapped up Wednesday.

"I know it's a crazy idea," said pastor Kelly Lohrke, whose 600 members attend services in Kansas City, Kan., and nearby Lee's Summit, Mo. "I know it's a radical idea. Christians can have fun with their faith and sharing their faith."

Lohrke said he came up with the idea out of frustration over the removal of crosses, nativity scenes and other religious symbols from public view.

Several groups have pushed the issue this year, with the American Humanist Association plastering ads on Washington, D.C., buses that proclaim "Why believe in god? Just be good for goodness' sake." That story motivated Lohrke protest.

Lohrke, whose church is part of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.-based Praise Chapel Fellowship of Churches and Ministers International, isn't convinced the founding fathers intended separation of church and state to mean the end of Jesus displayed publicly for holidays.

"It's just absurd," he said, "that Jesus is taken out."

Lohrke brought up the idea at services on Dec. 14, telling parishioners: "We aren't going to preach." If asked about their attire, he said, participants are free to share their faith.

"We've gotten nothing but positives," said Lohrke, who has dressed like Jesus at a Starbucks, a Target store and a post office.

Lohrke posted a video on YouTube declaring "Jesus is Back" and showing a participant in long gown and crown of thorns strolling through a mall, sitting on Santa's lap and averting his eyes as he strolls past a Victoria's Secret store.

"Next year, we are going to make this a big deal," he said.

I spend 99% of my time with people "outside my circle," yet because the other 1% of my contacts is Republicans the libs say I need to "get out more."

    LOL, whatever . . .

Some of you guys on both sides need to meet more people outside of your circle. Theologically liberal and politically liberal are not the same thing. I know many a strong Christians who do not compromise in their faith and their witness, who believe abortion, homosexuality, and a whole lot of other things are sin, but politically are liberal because historically Christians have been on the wrong side of a lot of issues and have followed greedy, bigoted, hateful, destructive Republican policies like blind ignorant sheep headed for the slaughter. I have heard Christians venerate Reagan. Yet, if Reagan and Bush Sr. had appointed pro-life judges, Roe v. Wade would have been overturned by now.

BTW, didymus, I don't vote a straight-ticket Republican ballot, so your attempts to paint me as such a person are quite laughable.

"(While the right wingnuts pray yet again for my salvation.)"

Can't get much more partisan than that!

Daniel Paul said, "After reading your posts I know who the left wing on the wingnut is!!! :D"

    :)

But I'll admit I'm not as lefty as I sound. I to oppose abortion (although in more diverse ways than just voting Republican), and I do hold that homosexuality is a sin (but politicizing it seems ridiculous to me), but I like stirring the pot here where no serious conversation really takes place... it's more entertaining than watching TV.

But soon I shall go back into my cave and read a good book. (While the right wingnuts pray yet again for my salvation.)

Can't get much more politically partisan than that... a vote for the Republican party is a vote for Jesus. Somehow I doubt Jesus would be that corrupt.

Just FYI, if people flag stuff just because they don't like the opinion then our response to it doesn't make sense. The Bible is full of things God didn't agree with!

didymus... what did you post? Just FYI, as a rule I don't do any flagging. Now, if for some reason someone posted something which has stuff in it the auto-sensor didn't kick, there may be a first time for everything!

Still, it would have to be something inappropriate by web standards (rated R and such).

"I love it when a religious wingnut lays claim to being "persecuted","

As I've posted elsewhere, wingnuts have a right wing and a left wing. After reading your posts I know who the left wing on the wingnut is!!! :D

Well I see the censors have been hard at work again.

I love it when a religious wingnut lays claim to being "persecuted", that liberals are trying to "kill the messenger", and that disagreeing with him is to disagree with God himself... and yet their posts sit there looking pretty, while those who disagree with them are now 'Flagged as inappropriate'.

God may not care how we dress, but dressing as Jesus certainly is a great way to spread the Gospel and started much-need conversations.

God doesn't care what you dress like. God looks at your heart.

This is a brilliant idea. It really puts some reality back into the Christian purpose.

It might also be a good idea to preserve the garmets for Easter since the crown of thorns is associated with Christ's death, not birth.

    The concept is great though.

The first thought I had in reading the article was a recent picture of about 100 Santas in Red Suit garb posing for the camera. After reading the article, I am reminded of the Perfect Stranger books by David Gregory. The very idea of looking up from your latte and seeing this fellow who knows all about you, calmly seeks that you release yourself from all the phony props and supports that have been mismanaging your life, and build a healthy relationship with the King of kings ...
Unortunately, I hardly look like a Jefferson Moore (the actor who plays the role of the Christ in the Perfect Stranger ovies and handful of short episodes. But looks aren't the point. The world does have a cadre of emissaries of the Lord, who, if they have the same Spirit, and the same love for the lost as did Jesus, could well be the "lights that shine."
It's just, well, to use the word that gord used, might seem "kookie," even if we don't dress up like Jesus. An honest proclamation of Law-Gospel might just get those weird looks.
Still, faith comes by hearing (Rom. 10:17).

last nite I witnessed the greatest gift as a dear friend of ours over for Christmas prayed to accept Christ as Saviour. as tears flooded my wife's eyes and I anointed her with oil, prayed with her and had my children praying for her, and a pastor from my church praying in the spirit you could feel the presence of God. Whether thru drama, skits, preaching hell fire and brimstone, win the lost at any cost!

awww how cute... hey i have this weird novel possibly kookie idea... hows about we go out to our community and i don't know... how about we PREACH CHRIST CRUCIFIED to everyone we meet on the streets? Help show people their sins and let them know that Jesus dies for those sins and let the Holy Spirit do His work on their heart... but hey... I guy dressed like Jesus drinking coffee and reading a newspaper, that might work too...

Yes, Daniel, it was quite warm today (5 degrees above zero?), though it got chilly again tonight so half an hour in the hot tub on our back deck was quite relaxing.

As for the libs on this Christian blog who pose as followers of Christ, I can only pray that they someday see the error of their ways and the Light of Jesus Christ.

In the meantime, I'm glad they're spending time here instead of spending time off-site promoting the killing of unborn babies and the spreading of the homo agenda.

That's sad. I know many liberals who make great Christians.

weekenderman, I called you a name?

You said, "As for persecution of Christians, the real thing happens all around the world, dude, not just in the good-ole USA. Bible-believing Christians expect and it don't dread it, but will fight against it when it restricts our Constitutional freedom to worship and spread our faith."

Yes, I know, I've been there to receive some of it. But I have to say that I find it a bit petty to equate "persecution" here in the USA with the persecution in so much of the rest of the world. Especially since no one is going to take away your right to dress up like Jesus in public. (I think I might even try that idea out myself next year, or maybe Easter, it's classic.)

To say that Obama's Administration will make dressing up as Jesus "illegal", or even "at least discourage" it, is a bit extreme don't you think.

Right there on the river, eh? I was born upstream in the Twin Cities.

You guys are having a heat wave aren't you? My brother who is still up there said the high the other day was like +5. Now the overnight low is higher than that!

Enjoy it. We get rain here.

Great idea. Wonder how long we'll make it into this next Administration before dressing as Jesus in public places is illegal (or at least discouraged).

It was a balmy California evening. I had gone for a jog before I was to speak at a leadership conference. I still can't recall how I got there, but I found myself sitting on a curb
