Iranian President's Christmas Message Sparks Outcry

By Aaron J. Leichman|Christian Post Reporter

The holiday message delivered by Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for Britain's Channel 4 television station drew a wide range of critics this week.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, center left, attends an anti-Israeli demonstration in Tehran, Iran, Friday, Dec. 12, 2008. Thousands of Iranians stage demonstrations to protest Israel of the consequences of the ongoing siege of the militant Hamas-run Gaza Strip. Ahmadinejad repeatedly has called for Israel's destruction. A poster, at rear, shows late spiritual leader and founder of Hamas movement, Sheik Ahmed Yassin.

Although each year Channel 4 features an often controversial counterpoint to Queen Elizabeth II's traditional annual message, many disagreed with the network’s selection of Ahmadinejad, who denies the Holocaust, advocates the destruction of the sovereign state of Israel, and executes children.

"Outrage doesn't begin to explain it,” commented Ron Prosor, the Israeli ambassador to London.

In Ahmadinejad’s message Thursday, the Iranian head of state didn’t refer to rival nations or leaders by name but said Jesus Christ would undoubtedly “stand with the people in opposition to bullying, ill-tempered and expansionist powers.”

"If Christ were on earth today, undoubtedly He would hoist the banner of justice and love for humanity to oppose warmongers, occupiers, terrorists and bullies the world over,” he said, according to the English translation of the Farsi-language speech.

"If Christ were on earth today, undoubtedly He would fight against the tyrannical policies of prevailing global economic and political systems, as He did in His lifetime," he added.

Following the broadcast, the Board of Deputies of British Jews, which represents the Jewish community in the United Kingdom, expressed how offensive the Christmas Day message was.

"To invite him to deliver a Christmas message, even a so-called alternative one, fills me with disgust," the group's president, Henry Grunwald, told The Associated Press.

Channel 4 was "aiding and abetting a tyrant," added British human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell.

"This is the equivalent of giving [Zimbabwean ruler] Robert Mugabe a prime-time television slot to promote his propaganda," he said.

In response to the outcry against Ahmadinejad’s inclusion in this year’s broadcast, Dorothy Byrne, Channel 4's head of news and current affairs, said the Iranian president was picked because he is “enormously influential” as the leader of one of the most powerful states in the Middle East.

“As we approach a critical time in international relations, we are offering our viewers an insight into an alternative world view," Byrne told the press.

Since 1993, Channel 4 has broadcast an "Alternative Christmas message" featuring a contemporary celebrity delivering a message in the manner of Britain’s queen. Past message presenters include activist the Rev. Jesse Jackson, a Scottish male comedian playing Princess Diana (less than a year before her death), a celebrity chef, and Marge Simpson from The Simpsons cartoon series.

Byrne said Ahmadinejad’s message Thursday continued "a long tradition of offering a different perspective on the world around us."

Christ mission on the earth the first time was to bring the Jews understanding that they had to be saved from their own sins. Their biggest sin was the oppression of their fellow Jews(Pharisees and Saduccees oppressing the poor for profit). Jesus had to heal the internal sin first before confronting the outward perpetrator of sin(the Gentiles).

"So Calvanists do away with freewill? "

You will find the explaination of that concept at the website below. In short...yes. They believe that man, because of his sin nature, would not and will not choose salvation thus the need for "irresistable grace" (point 4 of the 5 points). You will not the tone of superiority in the writing at this site concerning the 5 points of Calvanism. Still, the information seems historically correct.

Jesus had Hi opportunity to explain the scope of His kingdom to Rome's top man in the region, Pontius Pilate. He clearly stated His kingdom is not of this world, no threat to Rome. (John 18: 33-37) Still, His message did much to taper Roman culture. But Christ's message was spiritual, not political. His influence gains one heart at a time.
I wouldn't disagree with the deluded Iranian president on one point: When Christ appears on His second coming, things will be different, really different. For one, we'll never have to worry about Democrats and Republicans again.

Perhaps this is why marriage in America is having such a problem.

Christ's death on the cross is so much about or salvation from sin and hell and not enough about the on going relationship Christ died to have with us.

In turn, romance is about getting married and not about the marriage.

For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, {it is} the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

The point is that on the irresistable grace side you have people who (not understanding irresistable grace) remove man's responsibility to humble themselves, own up to their sin and repent. Many on the Calvanistic side of things become prideful. It is sad but true.

On the other side are the people who believe that whoever comes get's saved with little or no acknowledgement of the complete sacrifice from which His grace calls us to obey.

The original question was about free will and grace. God is not going to force anyone into heaven. Yet, each of us has a responsibility to confess our sins. It is a mystery. The mystery is why God would love us at all.

Did I make my bride fall in love with me? Even if she was drawn just to the person I am, if I did not show myself to her she would have never known. The main problem I have with the Calvanist/arminianism is that both diminish the great romance Christ has for his church...the mystery of His love and our love for Him.

    Daniel Paul

Sorry. I'm not sure what your point is. Yes, God is all powerful. And Satan can only do what God lets him (as shown in the book of Job). But whether God can supercede out will or not, is something I don't know. Maybe He can, and chooses not to. But maybe someday He will. As the Bible says "One day every knee will bow and tongue confess that Jesus is Lord." Now, that could mean that on that day everyone will realize that He really is Lord and worship Him, or it could be that many people, out of pride and anger, would still refuse to acknowledge Him as Lord, but He will take their free will from them and make them bow. To be honest, I subscribe to the first analogy. I believe the glory and majesty of being in the presence of the most holy God will be so overwhelming that even the strongest critic and most devout atheist will not be able to deny His deity.

"we need to be careful on the freewill theology, especially for salvation."

A Calvanist I take it. I once asked a 'Docrtines of Grace' (what Calvin based his beliefs on) pastor if satan had power. He said Satan had whatever power God allowed him to have. I asked "this doesn't keep God from being all powerful does it? He said "of course not". So, I asked him why it was so difficult for him to understand that a completely soverign God could be in complete control of a totally free will....

I think this was mentioned in an earlier comment, but it is a good thing to remember that God calls to us to salvation. Through His Holy Spirit He chooses us for His work.

We have learned to look at this as a matter of personal choice, as opposed to a matter of great eternal honor.

For many are called but few are chosen.

  • Sun Dec 28, 2008 3:08 am Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

Well duh! LOL. We do need to give God the glory for our salvation. He sent His Son as the ultimate sacrifice so that we could be saved. But it is still our choice to get saved.

Why are you warning indo about his free will doctrine?

  • Sat Dec 27, 2008 11:16 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

We do have free will. We decide if we will accept Jesus or refuse Him. He may look for them (via Christians), but it's still up to them to decide whether they want to acknowledge Him as Lord.

Hopefully many British Christians will protest against this hijacking of Christmas.

Yet in recent years, some prominent British Christians have publicly defended Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, such as Rev Dr Stephen Sizer and Dr Anthony McRoy.

JESUS "The King of Kings" would not have involved himself in the petty life of a politician. We tend to forget that when GOD created Adam & Eve - the most important gift he gave them was "FREE WILL". We, as a human race have the gift of CHOICE. The human race decides its destiny, but its convenient for us to attribute our failures to divine intervention.

Appearently Dorothy Bryne wanted to be more controversial this time...get some international attention.

    It worked.

But is this controversial and disgusting enough that she would lose her job over it?

The passage about Jesus saying "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's" was talking about money....nothing else. Unfortunately, Christians today sell their birthright away under the misguided belief of "giving the government what is the government's".

Jesus didn't come to fight a political battle. What this man says about Christ is completely false. If Jesus were here today he wouldn't be opposing governments and political figures. If anything, he would be ministering to the homeless, sinners, lost, and those seeking faith in something. And like Jesus says in scripture when asked about taxes he says, "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and give to God what is God's." Also when in front of Pontius Pilate, Jesus made it very clear that Pilate "had no power except which was given to [him] from above."

Jesus message is a spiritual one. A message that this evil leader, nor many other politicians just don't seem to understand. What upsets me the most is the misinterpretation of what Jesus actually stands for. People abuse his teachings to suit their purposes all the time, when in fact that actually know very little about what Jesus Christ is actually about.
