NYC Church Plans Rare Full Bell Peal for Obama

Bell ringers Tony Furnivall, left, and Jeremy Bates, demonstrate how to ring the bells at Trinity Church in New York, Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009. Each of the ropes hanging from the ceiling leads upwards to one of twelve different bells. Barack Obama and his message of change will get a ringing endorsement on Inauguration Day with 12 'change ringing' bells at the church, which is near ground zero.

The full peal, which lasts 3 1/2 hours, rarely has been heard in New York City since the "change-ringing" bells were installed three years ago at Trinity Church.

"Change ringing is a way that we express the joy of our community, and I think much of the nation is joyous about this inauguration," said Jeremy Bates, a Manhattan lawyer and former Obama campaign worker who will be among the 12 ringers pulling on sturdy ropes in the church's bell tower to mark the historic occasion.

Change ringing is far more common outside the United States. Most cathedrals in England have sets of 12 bells like the one at Trinity, the largest in this country. The National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., has a set of 10.

On Tuesday, the ringers will climb 100 steps of a narrow, spiral staircase and a 20-foot ladder to a tiny change-ringing room, 20 feet below the belfry of the church near the World Trade Center site.

In the sanctuary below, several hundred people will watch the swearing-in of the nation's first black president on a giant television. When the ceremony ends, the ringers will begin the peal.

Unlike stationary bells known as chimes or carillons, the change-ringing bells swing or rotate 360 degrees on a wheel as ringers pull on ropes. It's a maneuver even an 80-year-old can perform though the bells weigh from 500 pounds to 2,500 pounds.

"It's a question of finesse, coordination, not brute strength, and listening to where your bell is," master ringer Tony Furnivall said.

The centuries-old method produces a rich, complex combination of sounds with endless permutations of tonal patterns that have no recognizable melody.

The more bells means the longer they can be rung without repeating a row or change. Eight bells, for example, have 40,000 permutations while 12 bells offer a staggering 480 million patterns.

Full peals consisting of at least 5,000 changes and lasting more than 3 hours traditionally are performed on special occasions.

Trinity's band of ringers last performed one on Dec. 20, both as a concert and a rehearsal for Inauguration Day. Before that, the bells rang a full peal in 2006, the year they were installed with a $1 million gift from a British bell enthusiast.

Although bells are commonly associated with churches, Furnivall said they are primarily used for civic and state events to give news to the community.

Performing the peal for Obama's inauguration has special significance for Bates. He was a student at the University of Chicago's law school in 1999 when he had to introduce the state senator as a guest speaker to a group of Chicago law school Democrats.

"He was somebody who could both talk to law students in the legal language and talk to voters in a language that would make sense to them," the 40-year-old lawyer said. "That's a quality that he has obviously shown throughout this campaign."

Many shall rise to hear the ringing of the bell
And then the speech that will cast its netted spell
With song and dance and the holding of hand
They see not the judgment of God upon the land

Peace, peace, shall be their cry to show and tell
While war rages in the womb, where children dwell
With eyes dark they seek the land of common ground
Where prophets are killed and the truth is bound

Sometimes it gets hard to differentiate between true prophecies and someone seeing a trend and making a educated prediction. Such as our economy. Many economists know that the day is coming soon when the United States will no longer be able to pay off even the interest it owes to other countries. What that will incur is still a matter of conjecture.
Obama wants tens of billions of dollars to "kick start" the economy. Where's that money coming from? Deficit spending. Is that good for the economy? Maybe in the short term, but in the long term that is a resounding "NO". Because in order to pay off that deficit spending, the money has got to come from somewhere. The U.S. dollar is falling very fast as a viable currency. Our answer for much of our debts, both foreign and domestic, is to print more money. But printing more money makes it of less value. The more money you print, the less it's worth, the less it can pay off, the more you have to print. We've entered a vicious cycle that we cannot escape. A downward spiral into financial failure. Whether it is God removing His hand from our country, or whether it's part of His end time plan, I do not know.
But I do believe that the U.S. will very shortly be removed from being Israel's ally. That could because of our financial woes makes it impossible, or whether Obama (who, I understand, leans towards the anti-semitic group) purposely refuses to aid Israel anymore. And, upon hearing what's going on in Gaza, and the flack that Israel is getting from the entire world for defending itself, I can see America withdrawing it's support in order to stay in good graces with the rest of the world.
All this points to things happening, both domestically as well as globally, that will usher in the tribulation.

    OK Prophet. Thanks for explaining.

    star and salt,

I should apologize for posting that. As it did not come from what I would call a "reliable source" (a prophet). As star knows, I believe (along with David Wilkerson) that there will be a massive financial collapse of Mexico and America in the near future. Just the other day I was listening to some local Christian talk shows about future events, the host made the comment about that within the first week of Obama's Presidency that he would make some tough choices that would lead to a downturn of our economy. I was thinking that maybe that's what Wilkerson was talking about, but as I meditated on it, it didn't jive.
I wouldn't doubt that Obama may do something like that, but I wouldn't put that in the "prophecy" catagory. I believe it could happen, but I don't believe it's a prophetic word from God. But I do believe that Wilkerson's prophecy is. So, again, I apologize.

I believe within the first week after his inauguration, something huge is going to happen to our country. And it's not a good thing.

Most of what Obama will give America is the wrath of God. Obama is not even a natural born citizen and he knows he can't hold the political office of president because the constitution prohibits it yet when he is sworn in he will have his hand on the Bible and sware to God to uphold the constitution. If he doesn't step down ( we all know he won't) he will be (is) lying to God. Don't think that won't bring the judgment of God on him. America will be affected by it. Add that to his ungodly policies and you have a formula for God's judgment. America has never known tribulation like she will know under Obama.

Church bells should ring because of the message of Christ and His salvation, not to celebrate a man or a national event. Has the "church" forgotten why it is here?

Haha, I find it hilarious that any story about Obama will always get negative responses from people on this website.

Obama could give someone a piece of bread, and someone would probably call him a "Socialist!" for doing so.

For whom does the Bells toll???? For thee, Oh Barack Hussein Obama...because the bells toll against thee and your campaign to continue the slaughter and murder of the unborn, as well as your campaign to give homosexuals the rights to marry and to silence those who oppose it!!! Woe to you, Obama!!!!

Those bells are actually ringing in mourning for the 50 millions unborn babies killed through abortion since the Roe v. Wade ruling of 1972.

How sad that the civil rights of the unborn will only be further stripped away under an Obama administration.

Maybe "much of the nation" is joyous about Obama, but not "all" of the nation is joyous -- by almost half. Save your bells for celebrations of Christian holidays, not for untested politicians.
