Christian Leaders Seek Interfaith Cooperation for Peace Efforts

By Audrey Barrick|Christian Post Reporter

More than 300 leaders and members of various faith communities are proclaiming a message of peace and reconciliation and calling all churches across denominations to also take the message to the world.

"Radical peacemaking is usually associated with one segment of the Christian community: the Historic Peace Churches," the Rev. Dr. Michael Kinnamon, general secretary of the National Council of Churches, said earlier this week. "What I am stressing, however, is that radical, costly, insistent peacemaking is not simply your witness. Peace is the message of the church ecumenical!"

Kinnamon was making his address at the "Heeding God's Call: A Gathering on Peace" meeting in Philadelphia. The Jan. 13-17 meeting, convened by the Historic Peace Churches – the Religious Society of Friends, the Church of the Brethren and the Mennonite Church – has brought together an ecumenical group representing more than 15 faith communities with the aim of strengthening their witness.

The church leaders have recognized and stressed the critical role of ecumenism, or religious unity, in peace efforts.

"I want to emphasize one point: the ecumenical movement, of which the National Council of Churches is an instrument, is most essentially a movement of peace," Kinnamon stated. "Part of the point is sociological: Christian divisions (which ecumenism seeks to overcome) often exacerbate political conflicts and hinder effective peacemaking. War is too massive an evil to be responded to denominationally."

The meeting comes as violence is rampant in Gaza, Afghanistan, Congo, Somalia, Darfur, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, as Kinnamon noted.

Members of the Historic Peace Churches are calling people of faith to seek nonviolent ways to confront the violence, terrorism and fear prevailing in many countries. They are not only inviting believers from the various Christian denominations but also representatives of the Jewish and Muslim faiths to join the efforts for peace.

"We are deeply aware that the most effective work for peace will ultimately require interfaith vision, effort and cooperation," a statement from the meeting's website says.

As has been stated in past ecumenical conferences, Kinnamon repeated at this week's meeting, "War is contrary to the will of God."

"It is true that many Christians still see war as a last resort," he continued. "But there is now broad agreement that war is 'inherently evil' (World Council of Churches) – which means that Christians should never identify human violence with God’s purposes. Contrary to political leaders and Hollywood movies, it is never redemptive."

Asking Christians to set aside their fears – fears within the peace churches that unity would weaken their peace message or fears among Christians seeking unity that a message of peacemaking would prove divisive – Kinnamon challenged believers to be "ambassadors of reconciliation by the way we live with one another."

"Many professing Christians remain in denial that traditional Catholics and Protestants are spiritual drunks and whores (intoxicated by Catholic concoctions), drug addicts (under the heavy influence of Rome); traditional Christians and Catholics are spiritual practicing homosexuals, REPROBATES having a perverse spiritual preference for tradition over truth, for abominable baptized paganism, counterfeit Christian holidays they've accepted (following Constantine, not Jesus Christ), falling for accursed Rome's replacement theology that would replace the biblical Sabbath and holy days and dietary laws (we are commanded to keep) with their idolatrous traditions and unclean doctrines of demons..."

How kind. And peace be to you to in the name of Jesus Christ. (And promoting his own video I might have known)
    God Bless

I think the answer is easily discerned if we reflect on how few comments this discussion receives as opposed to such heavy matters as the Miss America pageant controversy. Peace just isn't as sexy. No one has even bothered to put a thumbs down or flag the barely intellegible comment by David Ben-Ariel. The truth is that religious people like most folk would rather be right than at peace. There is a something that makes us choose destruction rather than tolerance and coexistance. We fear that if we allow another's views to exist unchallenged, God might think we don't take our own faith seriously. It is easier to learn doctrine than to follow Jesus (or Mohammed, peace be upon him, or Guatama, or Lao Tse).

Interfaith Cooperation For Peace never works every time it's tried. Until we are mentally prepared as Christians to sign up, make and participate in the Hajj to Mecca, and the Muslim is mentally prepared to openly accept the Eucharist, nobody is ever willing to compromise on anything, ever, between the faiths. This requires moving to the edge of our comfort zones (and probably beyond).

Oglala holy man, Black Elk, amazingly may have actually found a starting point for Interfaith Peace when he said:

"The First Peace, which is the most important, is that which comes within the souls of men when they realize their relationship, their oneness, with the universe and all its powers, and when they realize that at the center of the universe dwells Wakan-Tanka, and that this center is really everywhere, it is within each of us."

We in the mainstream Christian experience normally have no way of relating to Black Elk's true message. It seems to suggest that we first focus inward in fearlessness, humility, love, and for a glimpse of a truth, mostly not known to western religions.

There are ancient ways to experience that the energy of the soul is separate from the physical body, and as this realization sets in upon one's awareness, it begins to change everything you ever thought you knew about Christ.

Peace within and among the diverse people is significantly beautiful achievement. Unfortunately, in the past, people fought and killed each other exhausting their resources in order to achieve peace as per their terms. Such a kind of peace could not be considered a permanent solution as it brews simmering problems paving for other conflicts. In order to achieve peace, fear should be eradicated, love should be inculcated and respect for every individual shall be maintained.
A comprehensive peace is only possible when the parties concerned understand the grievances of each other and respectfully reach to peace deals by committing to a dignifying agreement for all. In my short life, I have experienced and seen conflicts which seemed irresolvable. But human vision should not succumb to the evils of this world which are against peace; struggle for peace is the right religion which is shared by all the religions of the world.

For me, Jesus provided a window of opportunities by which I could work for peace among the world religions, diverse cultures and among individual humans by recognizing humans as one family under Almighty The-God. We in interfaith mission do not interfere with your diversity in worship and rituals but we value your solidarity towards peace among all humans upon this planet earth. No matter what diversity in faith and culture you bring, it will unite you with others in a struggle to achieve peace universally.

Yehudi Menuhin once said that "Peace may sound simple - one beautiful word - but it requires everything we have, every quality, every strength, every dream, and every high ideal". As ambassadors of peace to this world of conflicts we have reached to a juncture where people all over the world have recognized us as peace makers. It is a God's mission to work for peace and we peaceful people have come to humankind with that mission.

Almighty The-God is forgiving by His Nature; let us forgive others so that our mission gets divine blessings to achieve peace. It is time to transform existing arms race between nations into Peace Race through forgiveness.
We as peace loving people are destined to walk a long path through individual and collective efforts to achieve peace within communities and among nations. It is a continual process that requires your individual commitment and action, rest may help us God.

Not all denominations can be correct however they all can be wrong. If you weaken your beliefs by watering down the gospel message in order to have peace then you no longer can be considered a Christian. There exist one belief system for Christianity not a thousand different ones.Any loony can see that.
