John Piper: Economic Downturn Not Necessarily Bad for Souls

By Audrey Barrick|Christian Post Reporter

One of the most influential evangelical authors is encouraging Americans not to complain or get angry at God during these bleak economic times.

God may turn pain, job loss or vanishing retirement funds for our good, said John Piper, pastor at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, Minn., in a video message posted this week.

His words come as Democratic lawmakers rolled out on Thursday an $825 billion package to tackle the economic challenges and jolt the U.S. economy. President-elect Barack Obama is hoping to save or create over 3 million jobs and provide tax relief, among other things, with the "American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan."

As the recovery package is debated in the next couple of weeks, Piper has offered Americans some words of comfort and encouragement during the worst financial crisis since the 1930s.

First, the well-known author and preacher reminded Americans and those around the world that "God tests His people through hardship."

"And sometimes the darkest of days turn out to be the best of days because almost none of us learns the most and the deepest things about God in the rosiest of times but only in the worst of times," he said in the video featured on his Desiring God Ministries website, "and the knowledge of God is the most precious thing in the world."

"Therefore," he continued, "it's not obvious to me that an economic downturn is bad for our souls, maybe bad for our pocketbooks and bad for our stomachs and bad for our egos, but not necessarily bad for our souls."

Citing several verses from the New Testament book of Matthew, Piper says the passage is designed specifically for people who are on the brink of losing everything.

"Don't be anxious about what you should eat or what you should drink or what you should put on ... He says don't worry about these. I'm your father," he noted. "He means for that word to land on a suffering, laid-off family with tremendous peace."

"I (God) will take care of you. I will," Piper stressed.

While that biblical passage may provide comfort to Christians, the Minneapolis preacher also exhorted non-believers to turn to Jesus Christ and trust him.

And even as Christians, Scripture does not say there will be no trials or periods of suffering for believers, Piper indicated. But Piper assured that through hard times, God will meet every need – "real need, not just perceived need."

"I can be poor, I can lose a job, I can have a hospital bill that I don't know how to pay, for I can do all these things through Him who strengthens me," he stated.

"Count it all joy when you meet various trials knowing that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness," he added.

Addressing his message to the Church in the latter part of the video, Piper called this moment in history a "golden moment" for the Church to experience the promises of God.

"Will our (Christians) faith rise or will we be as anxious as the world is and just look like the world in all of our scraping by, scraping to say 'I got to have' instead of 'He's my everything ... I will work and do everything I can to meet the needs of my family and myself but I am not going to lie awake at night and get angry at Him or bemoan my situation.'"

He ended his message on a challenging note: "Do all things without grumbling. Why? You have a sovereign God who is on your side, who works everything together for your good."

I'm of the Pentacostal/Charismatic persuasion and have had much exposure to the prosperity/word of faith movement. I have been blessed to have spent 10 years listening to John Piper preach Romans and other topics. Too say that my time at Bethlehem Baptist Church is perhaps the greatest time of Christian growth and joy in my 45 years of following Jesus would be an understatement.

John Piper is a "socialistic Calvinist"? Since when? I must have missed something here.

drj, didn't say God would make us wealthy only that He will meet the needs of His children. And I think John Piper was saying the same thing, we don't need to be worried about our needs being me, simply stay focused on God and joing Him in doing His work and let Him be God, be our heavenly Father when it comes to meeting our needs.

believer, Our Lord even said, "the poor you will always have...", indicating that even extreme faith in Him doesn't guarantee financial success. Jesus and His disciples always point believers to their eventual state of eternal life. There is never a time when we are lesd by the Lord to trust in anything in this world...it is very temporary in the scope of our relationship with Him. The economic upheaval of recent days should serve to remind believers that material wealth and position are always subject to tremendous and even sudden change. There is only one thing that lasts forever: the Word of God from which we draw our faith. If anything, we should view the suddeness of our current situation as a sure sign that the Lord will appear at any moment. Therefore, we as believers must redouble our efforts to evangelize as many people as possible with the short time we have remaining before we leave this planet. The door of opportunity remains open for the salvation of Gentiles until His reappearing. Let's not simply encourage everyone that "everything's going to work out fine," but rather, with " lift up your heads for your redemption draws nigh!"

drj, although I agree those verses don't speak specifically to an economic crisis, they do speak to God providing for His children as they stay focused on Him and centered in His Will and continue to acknowledge Christ as Lord of their life. So I think what John Piper is saying is that as long as Christians keep their focus on God, desire and keep in the center of His will, and daily surrender to the Lordship of Christ and the control of the Holy Spirit God will continue to provide for them in spite of the economic crisis we are experiencing.

What Mr. Piper apparently doesn't know is that those Scripture verses about our spiritual growth during times of testing has NOTHING to do with an economic crisis!!! The verses refer to vibrant Christian witnesses who experience hard times directly due to persecution for their faithful sharing of God's Word. Leave it to a socialistic Calvinist to misdirect anyone he can possibly influence. The positive thing about this present economic crunch is that true witnesses will find some good soil into which they can sow the Gospel during these days. People are hungry for some "GOOD NEWS" and the best news is that God loves ALL people and desires to have a personal, eternal relationship with them through His Son, Jesus Christ. Sow the Word!!!

    salt,
Amen. Too many people take little snippets out of the Bible and twist it around to fit their particular agenda, or to ease their conscience. Then they wonder why nothing happens the way they want it.

God works everything for our good. wow! that's good enough to put in the Bible. i wonder why God didn't use that for?
