Christian Refuses to Drive Buses with 'No God' Ads

By Jenna Lyle|Christian Today Reporter

A Christian bus driver refused to drive buses carrying an advertisement that declares “There’s probably no God.”

Speaking to BBC Radio Solent, Ron Heather said he felt “shock” and “horror” at the slogan on the ads when he turned up for work last Saturday.

The ads have been put up by the British Humanist Association on buses across the United Kingdom with the support of prominent atheist Professor Richard Dawkins. They proclaim: “There’s probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life.”

Heather returned to work on Monday with bus operators, First Bus, who said they would try to ensure he did not have to drive buses carrying the ads.

"I was just about to board and there it was staring me in the face, my first reaction was shock horror," Heather told BBC Radio Solent.

"I felt that I could not drive that bus, I told my managers and they said they haven't got another one and I thought I better go home, so I did," he said. "I think it was the starkness of this advert which implied there was no God."

The atheist posters are in response to a number of high profile Christian advertising campaigns on buses and billboards, notably ones by the Alpha Course, whose posters ask, "Is this it?" and "If God did exist, what would you ask him?"

Christians have generally welcomed the atheist ads, saying they provide an opportunity to talk about God.

The Methodist Church's Spirituality and Discipleship Officer, the Rev. Jenny Ellis, said: "This campaign will be a good thing if it gets people to engage with the deepest questions of life … Christianity is for people who aren't afraid to think about life and meaning.”

The director of Faith-based think tank Theos, Paul Woolley, said the ads were “hardly going to be a great comfort for those who are concerned about losing their jobs or homes in the recession.”

"And what does it tell us to do when we stop worrying?” he continued. “Volunteer overseas? Give money to charity? Campaign for the environment? No. It tells us to enjoy ourselves. It would be hard to come up with a more self-centered message than this."

I think the ad misses a point: most people turn to religeon not to seek worry but to remedy worry. Having no religeon does not mean one will have worry-free living just as having religeon does not guarantee a worry-free life. However, having religeon will provide a means to ease life's worries.

Atheists drive buses that have religious ads on them all the time. The bus driver is just showing the bigotry of the religious towards atheism (would he do the same for a Jewish or Muslim ad?), and the fear that religion has of differing opinions. Past tabboos on discussing religion were the (effective) work of the religious bullying opponents into silence. Those who believe in gods are the minority in the UK, and this campaign will only help accelerate that process. Sweden has shown that among an educated society the percentage who will still cling to magical, fairy-tale explanations for reality is less than 15%. All civilised nations can look forward to a day when theists, and all the harm they cause in the name of their various gods, have shrunk to such a small portion of the population.

If he was driving the bus should that not read, only a fool in his heart says there is "probably" no God?

Should have driven the bus with a Tee shirt With Bold letters saying "ONLY A FOOL SAYS THERE IS NO GOD"

Maybe this bus driver is simply giving back what has been done and is being done to Christians in the UK and other places around the world....muslims won't do this or that because it offends them...well this sign about there being no God would have offended me too. It is about time that Christians or not start standing up to be counted and tell these islamists that they come to our homelands and therefore should respect the religions and culture of the peoples of said homeland....just as we all try to respect their ideology/political/religion system. They migrate then expect everyone not to insult them but they have no qualms about the insults they heap on everyone else. And all the concessions they insist upon regardless of the inconveniences it causes to the natives of the host country. If they don't like it they are more than welcome to return to where they came from.

The message at the buses is not bringing people to think about God, like some Christians thought so, but revert, it is to think and to behave like 1 Cor. 10:7-8 and Lukas 17:26-30

It's nice to see even bus drivers standing strong in their principles.

The real test of faith will be starting; in between the
people of God and ungodly people. Let us stand firm
for God, and we will win in flying colors.

I think atheists, other Christians, Muslims, whatever.. would get on with driving the bus(what ever poster is on the side) because that is the job they are paid to do, what the adverts say is not his concern if he does not like them, follow the complaints procedure or whatever they have in the company, and get the poster stopped. What he has done is not courageous but foolhardy, his stand changes nothing, he won't be sacked, crikey religious belief in the workplace means you can get away with almost anything these days. He is just throwing his toys out of his pram because he comes up against an advert that disagrees with his worldview. He makes a laughing stock of Christians in the work place.

That said, I hope you are well.

    Steveh,
I think what we can discuss here is "principles" and personal conviction to make a statement in light of same. I mused why an atheist bus driver would climb aboard a bus with Jn. 3:16 plastered over it and be about his trade ("Don't atheists have principles?" I thought to myself). Your ideas of talking up ones faith in a bus sporting a "Probably no God" slogan has merit. Still, for someone to do this extreme act of one-man work-stoppage is an act of courage (yes, he could be sacked) that is otivated by what one holds to be of utost importance. Respect that uch.

Your right, hopefully he will get another job so God can move somebody in more up to the task.

"Here's how this guy can be a really good witness,"

I don't suppose the bus company would have let the driver wear a button or something with his side of the issue? It's been a while since I was in London. Back then the driver had his own area and had no contact with the passengers. Still, how could he have witnessed?

  • Sat Jan 17, 2009 2:02 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 1

This guy copped out where he could have been witnessing for God,this is the job God had for him, so sure of his faith he thinks any disgreement should be hidden. Standing against ungodliness, I don't think so, more like running away.

Here's how this guy can be a really good witness, take the bus out and talk to people who board it about the messgae on the poster, get them thinking, I don't see sitting at home doing nothing as much of a witness.

  • Sat Jan 17, 2009 1:41 pm Agree: 1   Disagree: 0

This guy is not a witness, he's a silly man who wants his five minutes of fame.

Sorry, don't know what happened about the pun, spooky.

Yes, the employers are good and right to take that attitude but there does come a time when a person has to do the job they are employed to do which is drive a bus, what if it had been an advert for a beer he did not like? If I was waiting for a bus to take me home after a long days work and I was told there was no bus because the driver did not like a poster on it there might be a few choice words..same if an athiest did that also. Understand what you mean by the checkout and good idea but over here we have had cases of people being employed by supermarkets to work on checkouts then refusing to serve the old falling down juice, doing that goes with the job, they knew that when you took it, they don't have to drink it.

    Rant over, lol

Hey Steve! You left me a challenge and then never showed up. That wasn't very punny you know.... :P

"P.s Whats wrong with wanting to enjoy oneself?"

Well, I do enjoy myself as a Christian. I find it quite enjoyable.

"First Bus, who said they would try to ensure he did not have to drive buses carrying the ads."

Good for them! One should respect one's employees especially when it is as easy as a bus assignment. I would respect and athiest who didn't want to drive a bus with John 3:16 posted on the side of it. This is simply part of religious tolerance.

I differ from many in this area because I don't thing Christians should be in some kind of protected class. It is individual beliefs which must be respected along with each individual. My beliefs simply say that God will judge each person by their beliefs.

As for the supermarket checkouts--If I had a large group of muslim consumers I wouldn't have a problem with having one 'no alchohol' checkout. Many Baptists would be in the same line!

  • Sat Jan 17, 2009 11:59 am Agree: 3   Disagree: 1

This guy should be sacked, as should any atheist who would not want to drive the bus's that have scripture posters on them, the same goes for muslims in supermarkets who will not sell alcohol at the checkouts etc....
