Churches Remember King, Hail Obama

By Jennifer Gold|Christian Today Reporter

Church services to mark Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday were especially poignant this year, as black preachers across the country used the pulpit to remember the civil rights campaigner’s dream of a racially just world and hail the upcoming inauguration of America’s first black president.

The Rev. Raphael Warnock delivers a sermon during church service at Ebenezer Baptist Church Sunday Jan. 18, 2009, in Atlanta. Warnock is senior pastor at Ebenezer, the church where the late Dr. Martin Luther King once also pastored.

While King’s birthday is January 15, it is traditionally marked on the third Sunday in January, known affectionately as “King Sunday” in his birthplace of Atlanta, Ga., and observed as a national holiday on Monday.

The mood was jubilant at many black churches on Sunday as congregations joined in singing “We shall overcome” and preachers hailed Obama’s victory as a monumental step towards the realization of King’s dream for racial equality in America.

"Praise the Lord as we look forward to Tuesday," said the Rev. Raphael G. Warnock, pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, where King preached for several years before his assassination in 1968. "We ought to all celebrate this morning ... that we've moved closer to who we say we are,” he was quoted as saying by the Associated Press.

Carol Bell-Daniel, a 30-year-old mother of two, was one of several hundred worshippers at a memorial service for King at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Seattle on Sunday.

"It's as if we're moving from the past into the future, realizing Martin Luther King's dream," she said, according to the Seattle Post Intelligencer.

Obama’s former pastor, the controversial Rev. Jeremiah Wright, meanwhile, drew large crowds to a sermon he gave on Sunday at Howard University in Washington, D.C.

He praised the incoming president, who had distanced himself from the fiery preacher after sermons emerged online in which Wright was heard saying “God damn America” and slamming the United States for its racism and foreign policy.

Drawing from passages in the Gospel of John in which the sick overcome their infirmities, Wright declared, "No more seeing ourselves through the eyes of people who don't look like us! How does God see us?"

Worshippers also used Sunday’s services as an opportunity to pray for Obama when he takes up office on Tuesday.

The President-elect was himself in church on Sunday after a brief but somber wreath-laying service to remember the nation’s war dead at America’s venerated Arlington Cemetery.

Obama and his family received ecstatic applause when they entered Nineteenth Street Baptist Church in northwest D.C. and took up their specially reserved seats in the second row.

Offering a word of advice for the road ahead, the church’s pastor, Derrick Harkins, told Obama to turn to God for help in times of difficulty.

"Understand that God has prepared you, and God has placed you, and God will not forsake you," he was quoted as saying by the Associated Press.

Bruce Springsteen, Bono, Beyonce, Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington were among the big names who turned out on Sunday night to celebrate Obama’s pending inauguration at a memorial concert in front of Abraham Lincoln’s statue.

The concert was attended by Obama and his wife Michelle, as well as Vice President-elect Joe Biden and his wife, Jill.

An estimated half a million people turned out to cheer on Obama and celebrate with the stars what they anticipate is the start of a new era in American politics.

On Monday, Obama plans to spend the day highlighting community service.

johnzon - I don't have a religion - I have a relationship. Say what you will johnzon but truth is truth. You speak as if we are to tolerate wrong based on what is acceptable by the masses. Well johnzon I wonder how much tolerance you would have if someone raped your daughter or son if you have one. I wonder how much tolerance you will have if someone comes into your home to rob you. God doesn't tolerate Sin it is that simple.

<<I am not like the rest of you religious compromising carnally minded people >>

Quite a statement there. How would you know I am "carnally minded"? Perhaps you are just ignorant in the meaning. You have no idea who I am. Your intolerance and rudeness gives your religion a bad name.
The implication in your statements is that you are good, the rest of us that dont subscribe to your beliefs are bad. My guess is you don't many friends.

HeinMe A Christian will NOT condone Homosexuality or ANY sexual immorality! A Christian will NOT condone MURDER of unborn innocent children! Therefore since that man does condone these things I will call him to repentance and call him to cause! I don't hate the man but I do hate what God hates - SIN!

It saddens me to see us reduce to refusing a believer because we do not agree with his political viewpoints. Romans 14:10 tells us not to judge or look down on our brothers. Our President has confessed to loving Jesus Christ, worshipping Him, and even publicly denounced the Muslim faith as his own. So, we have a right to tell President Obama he is not a believer?!!??
We are obligated to help fellow believers gently, obligated to be compassionate to one another, and to encourage one another.
People have changed their viewpoints points from one extreme to another before. I would never have developed a closer relationship to God, tithed, or became Pro-Life if someone continually told me I was not a Christian and could not be used by God. The Bible teaches us to respect authorities, not just our direct boss but all authorities. Our President is a Christian that needs our prayer, not our rejection.

Believer: Yes, I do believe that the number of abortions will decrease under the Obama administration. That horrible abstinence program will be done away with and the number of teenage pregnacies will decrease for one thing.
The thing is, I'll bet if the number of abortions does decrease, a lot of folks on this site will actually be disappointed.
This just goes to show that so many right-wingers are against abortion only politically; not in reality.

    AMEN dgnymn AMEN!

As for johnzon You love using that term Christian so loosely. Just calling one a Christian doesn't make that said person a Christian. You asked: What did God think of terrorist acts, persecution and enslavement of Africans by white Christians in America? What did God think of the genocide commited against Native Americans by white Christians? Did God condemn those things? The Answer is YES God condemned these actions! This world will never change as long as they reject Christ. Obama can go to church and call himself a christian all he wants however there are some who have not been blinded by his fake smile and promise for peace and prosperity. I wont argue with you about that guy - he aint my boss anyway so I care less who runs America - they all will just mess it up anyway!

<<Woe be to this nation for applauding what God condemns!!!>>

What did God think of terrorist acts, persecution and enslavement of Africans by white Christians in America? What did God think of the genocide commited against Native Americans by white Christians? Did God condemn those things?

It seems to me America is a much better place now that those crimes are not generally commited, although in the case of Native Americans, most of them were exterminated and driven off their land by whites.

There should be weeping before the Lord and not praising the Lord for the inauguration of the most radical abortion candidate in the history of this nation, and the most radical homosexual activist in the history of this nation!!!

Woe be to this nation for applauding what God condemns!!!

chicago, apparently the bitter cold sort of froze your brain if your really think the number of abortions will go down and especially if he keeps his promise and signs the freedom of choice act.

  • Mon Jan 19, 2009 2:57 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 1

chicago24 You actually think that Muslim will stop killing babies? Oh my! You are somewhat right about the last Prez - since he was not a real believer either I can't say to much more about him. At least he did have some (not many) brains. Obama's administration will fund? You mean TAX PAYERS WILL PAY! Just like he is proclaiming that he will be different - and even before he gets furniture moved in he is already demanding over $800 BILLION to waste more on a dead Country that has squandered it's wealth on greed and gluttony. Did you want me to be nice? Yeah right!

  • Mon Jan 19, 2009 2:36 pm Agree: 2   Disagree: 2

ANY administration will be more "pro-life" than the one we just had for eight years.
With the social services that the Obama administration will fund, you will surely see the number of abortions decrease by tens of thousands.
    Isn't that what we want?

But many "pro-life" individuals seem to be against abortion only politically -- not in reality.

  • Mon Jan 19, 2009 1:28 pm Agree: 2   Disagree: 1

How can anyone who claims to be Christian be proud of this man in the White House is beyond me. Obama will be the most pro-abortion President in the history of the United States. He is pro-gay as well. Homosexuality is an abomination in the eyes of God. God will not bless this administration, and any Christian who voted for a President who embraces evil should not consider himself a Christian. Barack Obama is opposed to all restrictions on the killing of unborn children and has promised to eliminate the few that remain. He will allow the use of U.S. taxpayer dollars to fund abortion overseas through groups like Planned Parenthood and agencies such as the United Nations Population Fund. He will sign into law the Freedom of Choice Act, which would make illegal even peaceful efforts to persuade mothers from aborting their babies. Obamination wants to kill babies at all cost. Can you imagine Jesus being proud of an administration like this? That's unimaginable.

With that said, I leave you with this Bible verse for you to meditate upon: Should you help the wicked and love those who hate the LORD? Therefore the wrath of the LORD is upon you. (2 Chronicles 19:2b)

Let's see if the churches still praise Obama after his true colors come forth. Remember
Mat 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

  • Mon Jan 19, 2009 11:07 am Agree: 3   Disagree: 1

It is very clear that there are those churches that place the god of race ahead of the Lord of lords. There's a price to pay for idolatry and by the way: Obama is not the Messiah.
