Gay Rights Supporters Protest at Warren's Megachurch

By Jennifer Riley|Christian Post Reporter

Gay rights advocates gathered outside of Rick Warren’s megachurch on Sunday to protest President-elect Barack Obama’s decision to pick the evangelical pastor to deliver the invocation at his inauguration on Tuesday.

About 100 demonstrators lined the streets leading to the Saddleback Church campus in Lake Forest, Calif., waving rainbow flags and signs while chanting “equal rights,” according to the Los Angeles Times.

“President-elect Obama made a huge misjudgment,” said one protestor, Jenny Mirmak of Irvine, Calif. “The Democratic Party has always counted on the gay and lesbian community for their votes, then thrown them under the bus once they get elected.”

Obama received strong backlash from the gay community and its supporters after it was announced in late December that Warren, who had publicly supported the anti-gay marriage measure Proposition 8, would give the prayer at the historic inaugural ceremony.

Some had called the decision a “slap” in the face to the gay community, especially since Obama had campaigned promising greater rights to the group.

Rick Warren has also been under a firestorm of criticism for not only supporting Proposition 8, but also for comparing homosexuality with incest and bestiality in a recent interview.

“They have the right to protest, but as Christians we have the right to believe what we want to believe,” responded Kathy Cox, a member of Saddleback Church, to the protestors on Sunday.

Saddleback is one of the largest churches in the nation and draws some 22,000 people each weekend.

Amid backlash from the gay community, Obama has defended his pick by saying that America is about diversity and is made up of people with different opinions. Both Obama and Warren said that they hope to be able to show America that people with contrasting views can get along and show civility towards one another.

In the past, Warren also picked up heavy criticism from conservatives when he invited Obama to speak at his church’s HIV/AIDS conference. Warren had ignored the protest and welcomed the pro-abortion rights senator to the church’s stage to speak nonetheless.

Last year, during the presidential race between Obama and Republican candidate John McCain, Warren again invited Obama to his church for a civil forum about issues that evangelicals care about.

Warren is scheduled to give the invocation Tuesday morning, which will be followed by a performance by Aretha Franklin, the swearing-in of vice president-elect Joseph Biden, a performance by Yo-Yo Ma, and the swearing in of President-elect Barack Obama.

"And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting..."

I don't understand anything that Feet posts...I'm wondering if the literal meaning of the above Scripture verse has an application here?

PS that verse is not referring to a god of man's knowledge but the God of all knowledge Who has given us knowledge of Who He is.

I do test everything and keep the good. And I cast out perversions of what God has created. And I do not deny the power of God to change people.

'when it is finally reconciled that homosexuality is supported and affirmed by those teachings, i wonder what those who hide behind the "c" word will do?"

We will pray that God will have mercy on our immoral country and those who live in that lifestyle and those who endorse it.

You speak of embracing things that are not of our own making, that may cause us discomfort and even suffering."

And yet you don't. God said homosexuality is a sin. And that He wants us to come out of sin, but you won't embrace that. It causes too much discomfort. It requires sacrifice. It requires letting go of something you want so bad, but it's not good for you to have. All of which are not in the homosexuals desires. They have no desire to change, to overcome, to attain the image of Christ. They rather live in sin.

"They have the right to protest, but as Christians we have the right to believe, what we want................"

as a christian, one can believe whatever one wants to .........sadly that is so true. but but being a follower of the teachings of christ, we are compelled to embrace things that are not of our own making, that may cause us discomfort and even suffering.

when it is finally reconciled that homosexuality is supported and affirmed by those teachings, i wonder what those who hide behind the "c" word will do?

msupertekk, FYI, Obama is against gay marriage. Please do your research fully when it comes to voting, its an extremely important thing.

God works in mysterious ways. I did not vote for Obama, nor will I as long as he maintains his current view of things (gay marriage, abortion, etc., etc. Too many to list). I am waiting to see how Obama reacts and what he actually does while in office before criticising him. You never know maybe he'll have an epiphany or something. I know his short record shows he is for things that I as a christian am against. However only time will reveal the truth. May God help us all and instill upon us the holy spirit so that we may follow the path that leads to him.

People are protesting at Warren's church because Warren is offensive.

  • Tue Jan 20, 2009 7:22 am Agree: 1   Disagree: 0

If they're upset about OBAMA'S decision...then why are they protesting Rick Warren's church? I mean, wouldn't it make more sense to hold protests in front of OBAMA since OBAMA is the one that made the misjudgment? Don't they feel that OBAMA has betrayed them? They never liked Rick Warren to begin with, so what since does this make? What is protesting in front of the man's church going to do? They'd have more of an impact if they went to the inauguration.

But then again, I didn't know Obama only represented gay Americans seeing as how if he even looks at at conservative Christian, then their rights are being taken away.

Can someone please buy these "activists" a friggin' clue. Just what "rights" have been denied because some pastor is going to say a prayer in Washington D.C. on January 20th? Can someone please provide a picture of the "bus" that gays everywhere have been "thrown under" because Rick Warren is going to say a prayer. This whole thing is ridiculous. Some people really need to get a grip and get a life. Sheesh.

This Warren should make up his mine is he for Pro-abortion or is he gay, or is he a Christian? How about a liberal. he wants to be everything all at onces. How about just sticking to the word, Bible. Some of things he say might be true but his action do say the say thing? If you sleep with the dogs you are going to get fies, Obama

Pastor Rick Warren is right when he says homosexuality is no different than a pedophile or someone engaged in bestiality. It's a perversion of God's ultimate design. The cultural war will heat up and those in the Church must stand up NOW against these perversions.
