Obama Sworn In, Says Choose 'Hope over Fear'

By Associated Press Writer|Terence Hunt

WASHINGTON – Stepping into history, Barack Hussein Obama grasped the reins of power as America's first black president on Tuesday, saying the nation must choose "hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord" to overcome the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.

Barack Obama, left, joined by his wife Michelle, takes the oath of office from Chief Justice John Roberts to become the 44th president of the United States at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009.

In frigid temperatures, an exuberant crowd of more than a million packed the National Mall and parade route to celebrate Obama's inauguration in a high-noon ceremony. They filled the National Mall, stretching from the inaugural platform at the U.S. Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial in the distance.

With 11 million Americans out of work and trillions of dollars lost in the stock market's tumble, Obama emphasized that his biggest challenge is to repair the tattered economy left behind by outgoing President George W. Bush.

"Our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisions — that time has surely passed," Obama said in an undisguised shot at Bush administration policies. "Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and begin the work of remaking America."

The dawn of the new Democratic era — with Obama allies in charge of both houses of Congress — ends eight years of Republican control of the White House by Bush, who leaves Washington as one of the nation's most unpopular and divisive presidents, the architect of two unfinished wars and the man in charge at a time of economic calamity that swept away many Americans' jobs, savings and homes.

Obama's election was cheered around the world as a sign that America will be more embracing, more open to change. "To the Muslim world," Obama said, "we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect."

Still, he bluntly warned, "To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society's ills on the West — know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy."

"To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history, but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist."

Two years after beginning his improbable quest as a little-known, first-term Illinois senator with a foreign-sounding name, Obama moved into the Oval Office as the nation's fourth youngest president, at 47, and the first African-American, a barrier-breaking achievement believed impossible by generations of minorities.

He said it was a moment to recall "that all are equal, all are free and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness."

Obama called for a political truce in Washington to end "the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn-out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics."

He said that all Americans have roles in rebuilding the nation by renewing the traditions of hard work, honesty and fair play, tolerance, loyalty and patriotism.

"What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility, a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task."

With the economy in a long and deepening recession, Obama said it was time for swift and bold action to create new jobs and lay a foundation for growth. Congressional Democrats have readied an $825 billion stimulus plan of tax cuts and spending for roads, bridges, schools, electric grids and other projects. Continue »

<<I still will wish and pray that his policies are a miserable failure for the next four years and that he leaves office in disgrace. >>

Exactly the response I would expect from religious fanatics and bigots.

Johnzon: I highly doubt that you thought of GWB as YOUR President the past four years, so what you write on this thread is ironic. Regardless, although BHO is my President for the next four years, I still will wish and pray that his policies are a miserable failure for the next four years and that he leaves office in disgrace.

Experts: Obama Should Swear Oath Again

Chicgo24, Actually it was John Roberts that messed up. He did not read the oath, he memorized, but got fouled up. Roberts put faithfully at end of sentence and Obama knew that wasn't correct and tried to make it work, but between them it was flubbed in a minor way, big deal. We all make little mistakes like that.

Perhaps the problem is President Obama cannot speak as well as Bush.......................LOL.

weekenderman , Get over it. President Obama is my president, he is your president, he is the president of the United States of America, choosen through the democratic process by a majority of the American People. President Obama is a good decent human being and has the potential to be a fine president. So sit back and enjoy the ride.

Like the president or not, he's ours. Make some noise, get all hot under the collar, and then learn to deal. Most important thing we can do is to continue to live a good life, remain vigilant, and contribute what we can to keeping life sacred.

I've seen strong cases against abortion using entirely secular moral philosophy - perhaps, with enough work, one day we'll see it become unacceptable.

The gay thing doesn't bother me as much. I don't agree with it, I think it's wrong, but I also think that drinking too much is wrong. I think that being fat is wrong, too. I think that being a fat, alchoholic preacher telling your congregation to not "defile" their bodies is really, really wrong... but strangely entertaining.

SqueakyWheel: When Obama was young and a teacher treated him differently, or some girl's daddy didn't want her dating him, or etc etc I am sure then, it was not argued that he was half white. Somewhere along the line, white and black were defined in the country. My sister is very light with thin stringy hair, yet her birth certificates say both of our parents are "Negro". Therefore, that is what she is as defined by our society. So, if all of his life, he was Black, why when he has achieved the presidency is he suddenly Half-black/half-white? Practically every black person in America has some white in them.

Hmmm...some not-so-nice comments. Well, here's another: The only sad thing about today's inaugural... the cheering crowds drowned out the sound of the door hitting George Bush in the butt as he left town. Good riddance!!

I will pray president Obamuhh will see the need for the Savior and fall on his face before God and repent for his actions concerning abortion. I also pray he will not destroy our country.

I pray that this President will NOT succeed -- first because his policies are anti-Christian and second because they're anti-American.

Actually, BHO is America's first Arab-American President.

Citizens of Kenya - where Barack's daddy was born, in North Africa - prefer to be called Arabs rather than Africans.

So...OBAMA!!!! As stated before, this is not a day of rejoicing or celebration, but a day of weeping and tears, as the first "half-black" President is sworn in, sworn to continue the slaughter of innocent unborn in the womb and promotion of the deviant sexual sub-culture known as Homosexuality. Choose "hope over fear," is about as harmless as say "yes we can," or "keep hope alive." Enough already!!! So he wants to be remembered for a great speech. His was not great, and those who put him in office have agreed with his policies of the homicide of abortion and promotion of sodomy!!! God help us all!!!

I cannot stand Liberals, but I will pray that this President will succeed because I am an American first.

Correction. Obama is the first half-African-American/half-Caucasian President.

It is intolerant not to recognize the Caucasian part of his background.

  • Tue Jan 20, 2009 4:08 pm Agree: 1   Disagree: 0

Yes, and even John Roberts who presided, flubbed on his part.

  • Tue Jan 20, 2009 3:56 pm Agree: 1   Disagree: 1

Yes Obama got tongue tied when it came to saying the Oath of Office, but that doesn't mean he is not president. C'mon now...lol.

Did anyone notice that Obama flubbed the oath of office? According to the constitution, the oath MUST be recited in order to actuate the executive office.
Technically, Obama is NOT THE PRESIDENT!

  • Tue Jan 20, 2009 3:48 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

I heard he had lunch with the Bush's.

In listening to his address, this is NOT the same Obama that was running for President. It will be interesting to see what he does as President.

My special interest, of course, is in the area of education. The ONLY way he can do what he has said he wants to do is to make NCLB look like a warm-up. There must be accountability to do what the schools are hired to do under IDEA.

Bless this good man, who is now our president. Pray for him. He wants a better America for everyone - believer, non-believer and everything in between.

  • Tue Jan 20, 2009 1:00 pm Agree: 2   Disagree: 2

Obama also made history in a small area that few will probably notice. He became the first President since perhaps Madison to recognize non-believers as full citizens of the United States.
