Churches, Groups Look to Obama for Promised Change

By Jennifer Riley|Christian Post Reporter

Religious and rights groups are calling on President Barack Obama to make good on his popular catchphrase “Change is coming!” by flooding him with letters requesting support and attention to special causes.

Several groups have already asked the new president to put into action his promise to unite people that traditionally have been in conflict.

Just ahead of the inauguration, several prominent evangelical and progressive leaders came together to issue a “common values” agenda covering divisive cultural issues such as abortion, gay rights, immigration reform, and torture.

In the letter sent to President Obama and congressional leaders, the formerly at odds partners offered “a shared vision and a plan for ending the cultural wars.”

Together the two sides called for the reduction of abortion by preventing unintended pregnancies, supporting pregnant women and new families, and increasing support for adoption.

Moderate evangelical and secular progressive leaders also called on the protection of the rights of gay and lesbian people to earn a living with an exemption for faith-based employers to refuse to hire on the basis of sexual orientation.

Other issues they agreed on include the unequivocal renouncement of torture by the government and support for an immigration reform that paves the way to an earned path of citizenship for most undocumented residents.

“The culture wars have been characterized by vilifying those who differ from us on provocative issues and treating them as traitors and threats,” said the Rev. Joel C. Hunter, senior pastor of Northland, A Church Distributed, in Florida.

“I believe we can end those wars by thinking of our differences as ways we can learn from each other and advance without compromising core values,” he said.

Pastor Joel Hunter has prayed with President Obama on several occasions, including during a private pre-inauguration service held at St. John’s Church across from the White House on Tuesday; over the phone on Election Day Nov. 4, before Obama was declared the winner, and at the closing of the Democratic National Convention.

The “Common Values” agenda was spearheaded by Third Way and also included the support of Dr. David Gushee of Mercer University, the Rev. Samuel Rodriguez of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, Dr. Ron Sider of Evangelicals for Social Action, Dr. Robert P. Jones of Public Religion Research, and Katie Paris of Faith in Public Life.

Meanwhile, International Justice Mission - a ministry that works to free those victimized by violent crimes such as sexual violence, trafficking, and slavery – is asking the Obama administration and Congress to make the public justice system more capable of protecting the poor and vulnerable.

Other groups are seeking Obama’s support to end the Darfur genocide, maintain current policies that ban foreign aid to organizations promoting abortions, and prevent federal funding for embryonic stem cell research.

Is change ALWAYS a good thing??

Hmmm, I'd say thats a big fat nope.

Does God change? NO, and I thank Him for that!!

I agree, Obama is going to be so busy trying to please everyone that he's going to run out of steam pretty darn quickly. I'm looking forward to people realizing they were putting WAY too much hope in one man (who is NOT Jesus Christ!), and not in God. I am praying that we as believers can call on the Lord and ask him to forgive us and heal our land. None of us are without sin, we need God's grace more than ever. That is for sure.

My family is praying for Obama alright. We're praying that he's a miserable failure for the next two years in terms of getting his socialistic Big Government policies enacted, and that in two years Change comes to Congress so that BHO is a lame duck and ineffectual for the final two years of his Presidency.

"There is NO WAY Obama will be able to meet all the demands. "

This is what happens when a country puts its trust in man instead of God. The next four years will be a nasty lesson in truely trusting in God and not man.

    Change is coming!

    Supporting Stem Cell Research
    Reproductive Choice (Abortion)
    Support for the Homosexuality
    Expand Hate Crimes Statutes
Support Full Civil Unions and Federal Rights for LGBT Couples
Oppose a Constitutional Ban on Same-Sex Marriage
    Expand Adoption Rights
    Repeal Don't Ask-Don't Tell

As America has decided to follow Europe in voting in Obama, the nation will never be the same again. Only a nation shaking revival can stop this change. May God change Obama!

Third Way recommends that Christians turn a blind eye towards sin in order to embrace a unified culture.

It is too devisive in todays world to point out sin. It is better to just simply show love and appreciation for what God has created.

Christ was both devisive while at the same time showing God's love. And then He proved it all when He went to the cross. True Christians are to be no different.

This is CORRECT...the era of the "Gimmees" You know, Gimme this, Gimme that, Gimme the next thing. Obama will be known as the Goody Giver, because by trying to please everyone, he'll eventually run out of everything to gimme to, and the RESULT??? Higher taxes on the 49% who work to give to the 51% who don't. Pure communish - the redistribution of wealth so those who say Gimme more will get more.

    God help us!!!

I did not vote for Obama but my heart shudders to read things like this. We had better pray and hope in God. There is NO WAY Obama will be able to meet all the demands. Please pray protection on Obama, because what is rearing its head is truly ugly if these demands are not "met", especially in the area of finance. Perhaps many of these promises should not have been made. Regardless, people are even more unreasonable and if their demands for handouts from the government are not forthcoming due to the dire economic condition our country (and world) find itself in, there could be riots or worse. Pray protection on Obama. Pray for our leaders at all times the Bible tells us, wise words!

Wow! Can God's people get a grip on spiritual reality? when do we go to man (thinking he has the power) and bypass God to help people obey His commandments? Salvation is the answer, so preacher, start preaching the good news!

Whether you happen to agree or disagree with Barack Obama’s views on any number of issues, it would seem that our 44th president will very probably cause more members of our species to begin to realize that the intelligence, knowledge, judgment, determination, values, reasoning ability, language skills and all the rest of what is produced by the brain inside the skull of the particular individual who has been elected President of the United States is what really matters, not the assortment of physical features that characterize the body in which that brain happens to reside. 21st century humans would consider the sorting and categorization of the books in a library that was based on the color and other features of the covers of those books to be absurd. When will similar Stone Age assessments and categorizations of the members of our species be considered equally absurd?
