New Effort Launched to Promote Civility in America

By Eric Young|Christian Post Reporter

An effort to promote a more civil society amid increasingly uncivil clashes has been launched by the head of a prominent faith-based PR firm.

The Civility Project, launched on the eve of the inauguration of President Barack Obama, is a call to people from all races, walks of life, and religious and political persuasions to civility, explained DeMoss Group founder Mark DeMoss in a joint column with Washington lawyer Lanny Davis.

“In addition to our desire to promote a more civil society, we also share disgust for the incivility we see every day in this country, on the radio and TV, and around the world,” the two stated.

DeMoss, an evangelical conservative, and Davis, a Jewish liberal, developed the idea behind The Civility Project during a meeting in Washington six months after Sen. Hillary Clinton ended her campaign for the presidency.

“As dissimilar as our religious and political beliefs and opinions are, we found ourselves drawn to each other's love for this country,” recalled the two, “and a conviction about the importance to its future of trying to change the polarizing, attack-oriented political culture that has become all too common in recent years and, instead, to bring civility back as the staple of American politics and life.”

As an example, DeMoss and Davis referred to the uncivil events that erupted amid and after the campaigns for and against California’s Proposition 8, which defined marriage as between a man and a woman.

After California voters passed the measure, effectively banning gay marriage, demonstrators targeted faiths that supported the ban, particularly Mormons, leading protests that were sometimes angry and even violent. Churches were spray painted, cars were vandalized, and at least two Christians were assaulted. Protesters even hurled racial epithets at African-Americans because African-Americans voted overwhelmingly in favor of Prop. 8.

“[W]e both condemn the vandalism by some who opposed the proposition directed at those such as Mormon Church members who supported the measure,” DeMoss and Davis stated despite their different stances on Prop. 8.

“We also oppose the often blind hatred, violence and discrimination against gay people by certain individuals, who claim they act in the name of religious beliefs while violating other religious tenets,” they added.

Similar calls have been made by some members of the gay community who are increasingly becoming wary of the “reverse smear-the-queer” efforts incited by the media.

Last month, openly gay singer Melissa Etheridge and her partner, Tammy Lynn Michaels, came to the defense of Obama and evangelical pastor Rick Warren amid protests over the then-president-elect’s selection of Warren as his inauguration’s invocation deliverer.

“Sure, there are plenty of hateful people who will always hold on to their bigotry like a child to a blanket. But there are also good people out there, Christian and otherwise that are beginning to listen,” Michaels wrote in her personal blog.

“Maybe in our (the gay community’s) anger, as we consider marches and boycotts, perhaps we can consider stretching out our hands. Maybe instead of marching on his church, we can show up en mass and volunteer for one of the many organizations affiliated with his church that work for HIV/AIDS causes all around the world,” she added. Homosexuality is not a sin. Period.

There are 6 highly ambiguous verses in the Bible that are intererpested by some as condemning homosexual behavior, but any scholar who reads these knows they are dependent on a time and context that no longer applies. Further, these passages are correctly interpreted as contemning rape and idolotrous temple prostitution, not our current experience of Gay or Lesbian couples in love.

We as Christians are to love everyone, saved and lost but we are to NEVER excuse sin. And the Bible, inspired of God and written by Him says homosexuality is sin, and abomination. It's not our opinion it is a fact. But lying and stealing are sins also but we don't go around saying that we should do these things and that it's now ok. What was wrong 2000 years ago is still wrong today. Our young people today are being brainwashed by society's loosening morals. We as parents better teach our children because what they are hearing for the media and the world is totally against God's word. How are we so arrogant that we think we know better that God. We sit back and let this happen. We have to stand up for the word of God. We have to be bold. We have to spread the gospel. The gospel is the only thing that will change people's hearts. God sent His Son, God in human form to come down and take our sin and wrath that we deserved as sinners. That's the ultimate act of love.

Just a note to correct some misconceptions. As Jesus clarified in scripture, there are no good people, except God in heaven. We are all sinners in a fallen world, which disqualifies us from being good.

With that said, as sinners, we can DO good things, and help people in good ways. And I see nothing wrong with healthy dialogue and debate amongst people of diverse views.

As Christians we are called to love our neighbor. It shouldn't matter what state their souls are in to carry that out. God loves all of us, no matter where we are in life.

Being A Christian Myself I have always felt that we the Christians are very bad about Persecuting the Homosexuals! My Father was a Minister and his feelings were that we must take into account man did write the words on the Bible pages and some things are not always the will of our heavenly father. The Bible and other books have been revised before because of very damaging quotes and words that caused allot of hate and discrimination against people. Even the Mormons had to change there book and views on blacks.
Myself I think it is time to remove all the words that Persecute and cause hate against a race of humans called Homosexuals! We need to remove and forget the words that attack Homosexuals so we and futre generations all can live in harmony and peace together and let God do the judging not us. We must open our minds and hearts that was the will of Christ to love one another! There are far worst things than being a Homosexual such as Murders, and so on! So my Christian brothers and Sisters it is time to make change as President Obama said and create a new world of love and peace! I have seen how Homosexuals are very loving and very generous on helping the poor and needy and they give when they can not afford it! Not just the poor and needy but they give in so many was to help everyone who needs it.. I think that says they are good people and God surely gives them credit for being Christians or Chritian like..We must never forget that religion has caused more Wars, even today and Fall Of Huge Empires and that is so very wrong!
Time for us Christians to make some Changes and stop believing in some damaging things and doing things to hurt others who are Humans and are Good People. Let not history keep repeating itself please! Amen

I am all for Civility, But notice, Those who are considered " Good People out there " are those who listen to their side of the story, In other words those like the minister who says gay is a gift from God.

Most refuse to beleive this, But it's true, Christians love the homosexual, And God loves the homosexual, But homosexuality is sin in the sight of God,

Christians cannot change that, It is an act of love to warn the homosexual that they will stand before an Holy God and give account.

That's just the way it is, Not my doing, God has declared it so.
