You're a Christian? Already?

By Bonnie Ricks|This Day's Devotional

John 1:29 NIV

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

Some years ago, on national television, I heard a woman say, "Right now, I'm working very hard at becoming a Christian. Sometimes I meet people who say to me, 'I'm a Christian.' My response is, "Already?"

This woman's comments saddened me greatly. Obviously, she had no comprehension of what being a Christian means. Sadly, she was convinced that there's a long list of do's and don'ts associated with becoming a Christian. And more sadly, through all of her hard work and misunderstanding, she is denying the very one who could save her.

Since the day Adam and Eve blew it in the Garden of Eden, God has required sacrifice as atonement for sin. When God gave Moses the law, He instructed the people to sacrifice a lamb in the door of the Tabernacle (and later, the Temple) every morning and every night for the sins of the people (Exodus 29:38-42). Each year, on the Day of Atonement, a perfect lamb, one with no fault or disfigurement, and with no broken bones, was the special sacrifice that was demanded. Over and over again - twice a day and once a year - lambs were sacrificed for the sins of the people. Then the prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 53:7) told of the Servant of God Who would take away the sins of the world - the Man Who would be "led like a lamb to slaughter". To take away the sins of a world required a mighty sacrifice. And God loved us so much, He provided the sacrifice Himself. The final lamb - the final sacrifice - was offered on the cross and bore every sin that ever had been or ever would be committed by every person who ever lived. "Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed." (1 Corinthians 5:7 NIV)

Knowing this, why do people continue to attempt to work their way to heaven - to work so hard to "become" Christians? Why, when Jesus' death on the cross not only made it possible for every sin you or I have ever committed or ever will commit to be forgiven, but also made it impossible for us to affect that forgiveness ourselves? There is absolutely nothing you or I can do to earn God's grace. Our salvation was already bought with an incomparable price. Jesus already made the only sacrifice God demanded. We can do everything we can think of to work at being "Christians", and yet not one of those things will affect whether we are forgiven for our sins. You and I can do nothing, because Jesus has already done it all. The only thing you or I can do is accept this precious gift God has given us... and then do all those other things because we love Him.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. John 3:16-18 NIV

DRJ, you think His blood is capable of covering every sin? It did cover every sin. 2 Cor 5:19 says To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. He is not imputing your sins today. We are in the dispensation of grace. He paid for all sins once. Vowing to never commit sin again? Where is that verse in scripture. You are mixing law and grace and Israel with us today. You need to read and study and compare what the Apostle Paul says with the rest of the Bible. Only Paul was given the gospel of the grace of God from the risen Lord. You can't get salvation today by what the 12 disciples were preaching. Peter didn't even know that Jesus died for our sins at Pentecost! The only thing that will send you to hell will be unbelief. Not trusting that Jesus HAS already wiped your slate of sins clean. But it has already been done and it's up to us as individuals to trust it or not. Just faith, not repentance or confession. If your doing that for salvation, you are rejecting the free gift and are still in your sins thinking your good works are good before a Holy and sinless God. They are filthy rags and won't be accepted. Only the blood of His Son will be good enough. Repent (change your mind) of thinking you can earn salvation and trust the Lamb of God that was a sacrifice for the WHOLE WORLD!

I get it that you believe all sin has been paid for by the blood of the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ. Indeed, His blood is capable of covering avery sin committed...past, present, and future. Be careful, though, when you minimize how His sinless blood is applied to the sinful lives of sinners. The application occurs when the sinner REALIZES AND ADMITS the sin, CONFESSES the sin to Jesus, and REPENTS (submits to the Lordship of Jesus vowing to never commit the sin again). Jesus was very clear about how we should "count the cost" of discipleship. It involves 'taking up our cross" (dying to ourselves by crucifying our old sinful selves) and following Him (walking His walk). It is no minimal requirement! The offer of forgiveness for our sins required from God the innocent blood of His only Son. Our part in the contract that leads to forgiveness is to accept His offer in recognition of who He is, and with the desire to be like Him in our forgiveness of others. If it sounds like a pretty difficult PROCESS, then you possibly have not counted the cost of your forgiveness! Forgiveness is available through Jesus Christ, but it is not automatically applied to those who do not know the one who offers it. Jesus said to the Pharisees "Because you do not see your need for forgiveness, your sin remains." Imagine that! Even though Jesus died for the sins of the whole world, due to their rejection of Him as Messiah, their sins remained on them and will stand against them at the Judgment. What about you? Do you need forgiveness? When we confess our sins, He (Jesus) is faithful and true, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. How about it?
