Orissa Archbishop: Gov't Ignored Violence Because Victims are Poor

By Michelle A. Vu|Christian Post Reporter

WASHINGTON – The Indian government ignored the brutal anti-Christian campaign in the remote state of Orissa for months because the population is poor and uneducated, said Catholic Archbishop Raphael Cheenath on Wednesday at an event discussing the state of religious freedom in India.

At least half of the population in Orissa belongs to the outcast segment – untouchables or tribal – based on the caste system, noted the Archbishop of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar, located in the region of Orissa, at the event hosted by public policy think tank Hudson Institute.

As a result, the government is “not interested” in developing Orissa, which remains the least developed and poorest state in India despite being the biggest supplier of minerals in the country, he said.

“Orissa, in the eyes of the government, is a non-entity as a state,” Cheenath, who is visiting the United States this week, said.

To support his argument, the Archbishop pointed out that a fact-finding team from the central government arrived in Orissa only after the violence against Christians had been raging on for two and a half months.

However, when Karnataka, a state in South India, was attacked, the government was able to stop the violence within five days “because there are more educated and more important people there – politicians,” Cheenath claimed.

Then when the Mumbai attacks occurred, the violence was stopped in three days “though they were the most dreaded terrorists,” he noted.

Cheenath, frustrated over the lack of concern for Orissa, wrote a letter to the Indian prime minister saying that he does not understand how the government can stop the Mumbai attacks in three days, Karnataka in five days, but couldn’t stop the attacks on Christians in Orissa after more than four months.

“So you can see the difference,” Archbishop Cheenath said. “There is discrimination. There is a neglect from the state as well as the central government because Orissa is not an important place.”

Earlier in the talk, the Archbishop informed the audience that Orissa’s northeast region has a “very high” percentage of Christians - anywhere from 60 to 90 percent - compared to one percent or at most 17 percent in other areas of the state and country.

Many of the Christians in Orissa are poor Dalits or from tribal groups. Hindu fundamentalists have accused Christians of forcibly converting the tribals in Orissa, but Cheenath explained that the tribal had no prior religion before accepting Christianity. Tribal Indians are animists so it is false when Hindus say they converted to Christianity from Hinduism.

The attacks on Christians began in mid-August after the murder of a Hindu religious leader. Maoist rebels have publicly claimed responsibility for the murder, but Hindu fanatics insist on laying the blame on Christians and destroying their homes and churches in retaliation.

Since August, more than 60 Christians have been killed; 18,000, wounded; 181 churches, razed or destroyed; 4,500 Christian homes, burned; and more than 50,000 Christians, displaced, of whom more than 30,000 remain in refugee camps or in hiding in the jungle, according to media reports.

In one heartbreaking story, Cheenath recalled learning about a young Hindu girl who was babysitting at a Christian orphanage and was gang raped and then thrown alive into a bonfire by Hindu fanatics. Continue »

It is interesting to note that non - Christians travel to christian countries on H1B visas, sponsored by some churches, earn dollars and enrich their families in India and than bite the hands that feed them.
The hypocrisy in India is to deny that 75% of the population lives in dire property and are victimised by politics. Non- profit Christian organisations have provided food and education for decades and many of the present right wing bigots have benefited from the Christian/Western influence in India. The Indian command of the english language and western fashion does not originate from the backward thinking of the Bajrang Dal or Shiv Sena. At the present time, it is not just religious minorities that have been attacked by members of the Shiv Sena, Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad, but also the women in India who seek to enrich themselves through education. It is important to note that educated Hindus have warned about the Talibanisation of India by hindu rightwing groups.

Rajesh, your outright attacks on Christians can be
understood because some of the Hindus are brainwashed
with an ideology propagated by the radical Hindu religious parties, " Christians are converting the poor".
I must admit that, there might be one or two who are
allured to Christian religion due to economical incentives. You may check through google search
engine about the converts to Christian faith from Hindu
and Muslim religion, then make your own judgment. I am
sorry that you had some bad experience in the Church
you did attend. Did you attend the Church to find fault
with Christianity, or to learn more about Jesus Christ?

Hi Rajesh, why do you accuse the Reporter by name. She is simply reporting what Catholic Archbishop Raphael Cheenath of Orissa merely said at the said event. When the Archbishop comes back home you can protest RIGHT? IF the reporter doesn't report what was said you will not know.. so appreciate the work of the reporter. I hope you will do. Peace Out!

    Dear Rajesh,

Why accuse the silent reporter in CP on apprising us the atrocities being committed in our own country, the lovely India..which being a Christian..I love than anything..

I do agree with the fact that conversions are prevalent in India, however, the ones doing this are people who are not conversant with Bible, Christianity or any of its teachings. And due to this few people, burning houses, murdering Christians, etc..on people who are naive and who have nothing to do with these issues..is something that must be condemned.

I dont accuse the government for doing little, after all with this massive population, and being called the second populated country in the world, how much can the government do..It has been in fact helping..however..too slow..

And as an Indian, I am proud of my country's policies, its democratic stand, its fight for freedom through peace and non-violence..We are known for our hospitality, and love..however..due to few people..the country is being defamed..

    Only prayers can help :(

    Michelle A. Vu,

People like you rather than helping people by calling other religious fanatics is symbol of you as an extremist. Being an indian I know why people don't like conversion. If they really converted to other religion from other religion to chirstainty then ask them people who are converted in the court in government books in india. Because why should we have to pay taxes and feed them when our children are loosing benfits due to reservation system for poor people in india. For example even in chistainity itself protestant don't like catholics and each other first of all love you guys love each other rather than creating hate. By not promoting peace you guys destroy peace and saying chirstains are supperior and other religions are inferior. i went to church from past 2 years in baptsit in usa. so i know what you guys do ? brain wash people and begg money by saying serving other people. If you want to convert people to other religion. Go to africa and help those people. Poverty creates ignorance. Igonrance creates voilence. educated guy like you who is able to write and read making a mistake by promoting chrsitain terror. which you guys done for years through the world .we know West tactics. Please accept plurism and religious tolerance. I believe there is no smoke with out fire. I know what some christains done in iraq. So what ever you write against any religion, it is shows your ignorance.

Elected people tend to appeal to the poor when they are running and then ignore them once in office.

    No real change until 2012....
