Purpose Driven Connection Launches amid Economic Depression

By Jennifer Riley|Christian Post Reporter

Rick Warren's Purpose Driven Connection launches this week with its first quarterly magazine issue along with tools that can help Americans better confront the hard economic times.

"With the collapse of our economy, the tools, resources and experiences we've bundled into the Purpose Driven Connection are arriving at the exact moment when Americans need them most," Warren said. "The hollow hope of materialism has left us disappointed, empty and worried, and the economic collapse has created a hunger for a deeper spiritual connection to God and to each other.”

Although the staff of PDC didn’t anticipate the national crisis while designing the tools, the well-known pastor said they now anticipate the set to provide essential spiritual support and encouragement to downtrodden people around the world.

“God’s timing is always perfect,” Warren said.

Purpose Driven Connection is a comprehensive bundled suite of personal growth tools, resources and experiences. Each magazine issue includes a small group discussion guide with a DVD covering Warren’s teaching on spiritual growth. Other multimedia resources will continue to be rolled out throughout 2009.

Warren has explained that he created PDC after meeting with pastors around the world and hearing their concerns about the tools they need to develop their members to spiritual maturity. Through PDC, Warren seeks to address the themes and needs he most often heard mentioned.

“Purpose Driven Connection is a spiritual growth network for nurturing healthy relationships, a framework for focusing one's time and energy, a pathway for discovering one's life's purpose, a gateway to opportunities for making a significant impact with one's life and a library of useful tools to accelerate one's spiritual, emotional and relational growth," Warren said.

Subscribers of the multimedia tool kit will receive quarterly the “Purpose Driven Connection” magazine, quarterly video teaching by Warren on DVD with discussion guides, membership access to the online social network that will be launched in mid-February, nine personal growth tools, retreats and global service opportunities through a humanitarian strategy called the PEACE plan, among other resources.

Warren, who authored the bestselling book The Purpose Driven Life, is working with The Reader’s Digest Association (RDA) to publish the PDC tools. He will serve as editor-in-chief for PDC but will not receive any monetary compensation for his work.

“This is a labor of love,” Warren had explained earlier before the launch. “We want to help pastors help everyone else.”

The magazine will be available for sale at newsstands, bookstores and national retail outlets, including Wal-Mart, beginning Feb. 3.

In his book, "The Purpose Driven Life - What On Earth Am I Here For?", by Rick Warren. Likely it's just me who misunderstands his words. Rev. Warren lists 39-postulates in which I can concur for every 1-postulate (very important 1-postulate) I must challenge him for further clarification. It seems this is the crux of multiple failures within the Christian heritage which causes me to head along a slightly different path with my ever migrating herd.

Warren postulates, "We bring God glory by loving other believers," (pg 56). This posture of love seems to me too narrow and Christian-only, outsiders need not apply. To "think globally," as Rev. Warren goes on to postulate, requires us to find (I believe) the unconfused essence of "divine love" that is known equally by our perceived enemies as it is known to ourselves, through the higher self.

If you are not pushed to the edge of your comfort zone in seeking to understand "divine love," you are either a saint, or missing the point. Divine love is absolute, unconditional, equally upon worthy and unworthy, acceptance of all of us, Hindu, Christian, Jew, Muslim, mystic, atheist, animist, idolater, communist, capitalist, materialist, tyrant, wizard, spirit, daemon, angel, the whole spectrum of life and consciousness.

Perhaps our greater purpose is try to discrimminate and choose between good and evil, not believer and non-believer. This process will bring you to your life's question that can only be answered through mystic revelation -- gift of grace: to know.... and therein lie inner piece and the threshold of enlightenment.

The Purpose Driven Life was ok, but Billy Grahams book THE JOURNEY was so much better.

We as materalistic Christians (I include mayself) have taken on the worlds way of saving and spending and not depending on God. The tithe belongs to God. I am having a hard time financially and I have turned this back over to The lord. Maybe Rick Warren should suggest this and give away his book, But what could be better than Scripture?

I won't be buying it. I want sound doctrine without any Scripture twisting.

It was a balmy California evening. I had gone for a jog before I was to speak at a leadership conference. I still can't recall how I got there, but I found myself sitting on a curb
