Poll: Repeal of Mexico City Policy Least Popular Among Obama Moves

By Lawrence Jones|Christian Post Reporter

Among the several major actions President Obama has taken in the early days of his office, his decision to reverse the prohibition on funding for overseas abortion providers was the least popular, the latest Gallup Poll shows.

President Barack Obama sings executive orders on the Middle Class Working Families Task Force, Friday, Jan. 30, 2009, in the East Room of the White House in Washington.

Only 35 percent of Americans approved of Obama's repeal of the Mexico City Policy, while 58 percent disapproved, according to a Gallup poll released Monday. The second least popular action was the order to close the Guantanamo Bay prison with only 44 percent expressing approval.

The USA Today/Gallup poll, conducted Jan. 30-Feb. 1, asked 1,027 Americans to say whether they approve or disapprove of seven specific actions Obama has taken as president.

Out of the seven policies included in the poll - from naming special envoys for the Middle East to limiting interrogation techniques on prisoners - Obama's decision to repeal the pro-life rule garnered the highest disapproval rating.

The Mexico City Policy, which declared that American tax dollars would not fund international organizations involved in performing or promoting abortions abroad, was established by President Ronald Reagan in 1984. The policy was repealed by Bill Clinton when he took office in 1993 but it was then re-instituted by George W. Bush in 2001. Obama has once again lifted it.

When compared across political lines, the president's repeal of the pro-life rule still received the lowest approval rating.

Democrats were more likely than Independents to approve of the decision, 59 to 33 percent. Meanwhile, only 8 percent of Republicans approved.

Obama reversed the abortion funding ban through an executive order signed on his first Friday in office.

Operation Rescue President Troy Newman has criticized Obama for releasing the funding late on Friday, which he believes is a tactic to minimize media coverage.

"This proves that Obama's radical support of unrestricted abortion is an extremist position that is out of touch with the American people. He knows it, too, or he would not try to sneak these policies under the radar," said Newman, an outspoken pro-life activist.

"This week's Gallup poll revealed the truth that President Obama's decision to roll back the commonsense Mexico City Policy is out of step with the attitudes of the majority of American taxpayers," agreed Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony List, a group that seeks the advancement of pro-life women in politics.

Obama's strong support for other abortion policies have also alarmed pro-life groups.

He has indicated that one of the first actions he would take as president is to sign the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA), a measure that would codify Roe v. Wade and prohibit any state from denying a woman the right to an abortion.

Pro-life groups fear that FOCA, if enacted, would override existing pro-life state laws, including parental notification laws and laws restricting abortion. The measure was a topic of protest at massive pro-life rallies commemorating Roe v. Wade last month in Washington, D.C., and San Francisco.

Newman added that Obama is well on his way to being known in history as the "Abortion President."

The Susan B. Anthony List has campaigned to the 41 votes necessary to sustain a filibuster against measures promoting federal taxpayer funding of abortion. The organization has already sent over 72,000 letters to the U.S. Senate urging the preservation of federal abortion funding restrictions.

"I strongly urge President Obama to abandon the radical abortion bailout agenda. Americans want him to endorse policies that actually reduce abortion, not promote it at the taxpayer's expense," said Dannenfelser.

The provision in the stimulus plan to expand state access to family-planning services under Medicaid was dropped after House Republicans denounced it, arguing that it wouldn't stimulate the economy and would instead go toward funding "the abortion industry" and the distribution of contraceptives.

whati have found is that there is a reason the poor are poor.........drug addiction, mental delusion, no incentive etc it is rare to find a hard working person who remains poor.

How about lack of education, resources and role models? I know plenty of people that work as hard as anyone, sometimes at several jobs, to make ends meet and they are still poor. It certainly isn't for lack of work or ambition. It's lack of options when there are mouths to feed and bills to pay. It irks me to hear people way that if you're not well off, it's because you don't work hard enough. It's a crock, really, in a lot of cases.

feet, I am not aware of any of Bush's non-follow throughs, but I will agree with all else you have said and in fact there are so many faith based outreach opportunites to help third world countries and in fact my daughter is "finally" (I say that becuase she has been waiting many years to go) old enough to go on a mission trip the church goes on every year. Depending on the need, they build a house or a church. Last year they built a church and if I'm not mistaken they are building a house this year. They get to interact with the people they are building for and the community and while there they visit an orphanage and give little ziploc bag care packages.

its true at the end of his administration he proposed 15 billion in aids assistance. how much of that money was actually given i do not know. george had a history of proposing money but never following thru.

my understanding is that we are stepping in and supplying food when there is a possibiity of mass genecide caused by acts of war or god.

but i would like to see and would seriuosly consider volunteering for a peace core iniative like that, that existed during the kennedy years.

my doors are always open to the poor in my neighborhood.

whati have found is that there is a reason the poor are poor.........drug addiction, mental delusion, no incentive etc it is rare to find a hard working person who remains poor.

the third world is different, where the resources to rise above poverty are slim to none and where corruption is ten times worse than this country.

sometimes a little money in the right place can go a long way in making a difference in many lives, like offering to provide wells with clean water, or innoculation against disease, etc. and this is what i hope is obama's interest, to be tempered by the needs in this country.

feet, forgive me, but the amount of $ spent on foriegn aid especially to Africa where, if I not mistaken what you mention is common, has been the highest in history under President Bush.

Let me ask you this, though, are we Americans not only responsible for financially taking care of our poor, but now, as you seem to imply, are responsible for taking care of the world's poor? When do we require countries to take care of their own?

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for helping, just not enabling.

im saying that he will have policies that will effectively improve peoples lives.

george withdrew 15 billion in funds because some of the money was being allocated for the distribution of contraceptives.(at the time george supported an abstinence only policy) included was money for specifically 3rd world birth surgery.............suturing perineal tearing, (tearing between the vaginal opening and anus during birth. this is unfeeling senseless stupidity.

Also, feet, what are you trying to say about these underdeveloped countries? Are you saying that Obama is going to develop them, how?

thank god we have a president with the work ethic(george took more vacations than any president on record) that gives him to a full understanding that is beyond the limits of this culture and this coumtry's borders.
for instance in undeveloped countries getting pregnant can be a death sentence because of influences starvation or malnutrition.

in underdeveloped countries pregnant women are three hundred times more likely to die from childbirth than in developed countries.

sometimes doctors without borders have to use abortion to save the mother for the children she has already given birth to.

in the unitedstates the maternal death rate is 13 for every 100,000

in countries like senegal and sierra leone in africa it is 1600 for every 100,000.

Obama is a wolf in sheep's clothing and attempting to "change" the definition of Christian.

His incompetence is starting to glare - failed attempt to bring in his liberal padres (Daschel etc. ) though he says he's "absolutely" behind him when Obama knew of these tax cheats. The vail of invisibility is starting to fall. His death culture is catching up to him and his "mistakes" will increase at the costs of American lives.

Obama's policies on Abortion and the same sex unions fly into the face of everything God declares on these subjects.

You shall know them by their fruit," enough said."

What confuses me is how President Obama can call himself a Christian and do such a thing. Matthew 7:21 (New International Version) is again proven true
"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven."
