Publisher Recalls Encyclopedia for Being 'Too Christian'

By Katherine T. Phan|Christian Post Reporter

Wiley-Blackwell, a major academic publisher, is recalling copies of Encyclopedia of Christian Civilization and scrapping the print run after critics said the entries were "too Christian" and "too anti-Muslim."

The publisher was set to release the four-volume encyclopedia this month after it was completed last September.

But a small group of critics that included contributors and some members of the editorial board objected to the final version.

"They determined that the Introduction and many of the entries were 'too Christian, too orthodox, too anti-secular and too anti-Muslim and not politically correct enough for being used in universities," said the encyclopedia’s editor, George Thomas Kurian, sounding angry in an e-mail sent last week to nearly 400 contributors.

The charge against the book was led by David Morgan, professor of Religion at Duke University, and Bernard McGinn, professor of Historical Theology and of the History of Christianity at The University of Chicago Divinity School, according to Kurian.

Blackwell subsequently decided to suspend the publication, recall copies already distributed, and destroy the existing print run.

Kurian called the move the "first instance of mass book-burning in the 21st century."

The book was intended to be a comprehensive work on the history and legacy of Christianity, looking not only at the religion but at the aspects of society, such as art, literature, architecture, music, politics, and scholarship, it has shaped.

Now, the book's publisher and editorial director want to "de-christianize" all 1,450 entries in the encyclopedia to make it politically correct before it can be reprinted, according to Kurian.

He also claimed the press is looking to delete words including, "Antichrist," "Enemy," "Beloved Disciple," "Gates of Hell," "Witness," "Virgin Birth," "Resurrection," "Evangelism” and any reference with an "evangelical tone." BC and AD, chronological markers for "Before Christ" and "Anno Domini," will also likely to dropped.

Kurian also said the press objected to "historical references to the persecution and massacres of Christians by Muslims, but at the same time wanted references favorable to Islam."

"To make the treatment 'more balanced,' they also want the insertion of material denigrating Christianity in some form or fashion. All these I have refused to do," stated the encyclopedia's editor.

He added, "This is the most blatant form of censorship in the history of religious publishing."

Susan Spilka, corporate communications director of Wiley, said Kurian's allegations were "completely without foundation."

"It would make no sense for us to sabotage a project to which we have committed long-term investment and resources, and which we think will be valuable addition to Christian scholarship," she said in a statement.

She contended that Wiley had learned that "few if any" contributions had been reviewed by the board as had been required.

According to Kurian, however, the work was edited, copy edited, fact checked, proofread and then approved by Blackwell’s editorial team. Printed and bound copies launched at the American Academy of Religion/Society of Biblical Literature conference, where it received high praise, he said.

Kurian has vowed to fight the censorship in court.

In his e-mail, he invited contributors to join him in a class-action lawsuit that seeks restitution for the lost income and charges Wiley-Blackwell of breach of contract. The suit seeks to have Blackwell publish the encyclopedia as originally approved and printed, without change and without censorship of its Christian content, tone and character.

"It will send a strong message to the politically-correct establishment that we will not allow the freedom of Christian expression to be abridged, muzzled, denied or trampled upon," said Kurian, who will also file a similar suit on his behalf.

Kurian has edited 60 highly successful reference works, including 27 encyclopedias. They include The World Christian Encyclopedia, Nelson's New Christian Dictionary, The Encyclopedia of the First World, and The Encyclopedia of the Third World.

The truth gang, is we are living in the best of times right now. It doesn't matter what anyone bans, or what the government does, cause we are living in the End Times. I can see the pages of Revelation coming into play everyday I read the newspaper or watch the news. Christ is coming soon, and we will see it in our lifetime!

I wonder if these are the same people that want the Holocaust removed from textbooks because "it never happened"...

This encyclopedia is intended for the public school colleges. It is for the education of our students.

So who is really guiding the direction of these books even after the first printing was supposedly approved.

Why are these scholars changing their minds? What are the specific concerns?

None of the articles I have read on this issue, including this one, explore these questions.

Nor do they include interviews with those who led the campaign against the final version.

The only concrete evidence of something having gone really wrong is that these books were burned. Not just simply removed from the shelves...but burned.

Who wanted to send that message?

    Salt,
Amen. Though man's morals change, God's Truth never does.

Guys! the Bible is not about 'Christianity' the word isn't even in the Bible. today it means to most, 'not Muslim' or 'not athiest' so Yes! much done in the name of 'christianity' has been wrong. the Bible IS about God's communication to mankind and man's refusal to accept God's authority and control. 'Christian' in Bible terms, as applied as a nick-name in the first instance, means a true follower of Jesus Christ, ie. a born again person living it out. in that sense 'Christian'histroy started in AD33 and the NT account is without bias (Read Acts 5!)

pvl, apparently you've never read the Bible since it does just that and that is one of the reasons it can be trusted as the Word of God because it does record the "warts" of God's people!

"I really doubt Christians would really like an honest account of the history of Christianity."

At Bible college we studied Christian history actually starting at the beginning of the greek and roman civilizations (to get the foundation of the times).

Anyone reading the Old Testement should be able to note that it is about the failings of man in the name of being Godly. There really is nothing that can be written about the Christian faith that is worse than our own recorded history in the Bible. The Bible isn't about the goodness or righteousness of man but rather his ungodly lack thereof.

The whole point of Christianity is that we WILL mess things up on our own and need to do what God says.

You know Pvlman, there are christians in name only, and then there are true Christians who read the Bible word for word and believe. We don't need to read any other book, there is ONLY ONE BOOK that matters to us, and we follow it faithfully. Remember, anyone can say they are a Christian, but very few can live up to it. What can you expect when our own president is a christian in name only, and stands for all things Christians are against!

Next they will be banning The Bible. Tribulation is so close, I can almost hear the trumpet blast!

  • Sat Feb 14, 2009 5:08 am Agree: 0   Disagree: 1

I really doubt Christians would really like an honest account of the history of Christianity. One that contained warts and all. While such history should record the oppression Christians suffered, it should record the oppression of others by Christians. Heck Christians can agree on one Bible, it's nuts to expect them to agree on a Christian encyclopedia.

Nothing much has changed in 2000 years of Church History! the Jewish Council in AD33 tried to stop Peter preaching for the same reasons - 'don't teach in the name of Jesus' Peter said, 'we cannot but speak what we have seen and heard' (Acts 4v20) The impact of and opposition to Christianity since can hardly be expunged by burning a few Books. BTW they burned the first English New Testaments AND the translator, William Tyndale in 1520 - the English Bible since is the officially biggest selling book in history! over 1,000,000,000 copies! Burn a few Encyclopaedias then, the result will surprise the opposition!

Let's see ... The book is called Encyclopedia of CHRISTIAN Civiization. But it's not secular enough? Oh, how come? And not sufficiently positive about matters Mslim? Wow, that's a mystery to me!
It is so bizarre that a book that exhibits raw displays of pure Christian thought could make the timid wince and the feeble faint.
It's enugh to drive one to closed-mindedness.
But that's the legacy of political correctness.

    "Encyclopedia of Christian Civilization "

Umm. The Encyclopedia of CHRISTIAN Civilization is too Christian. "Waiter! I want to send my spagetti back. It's too Italian!!!"

Was said: When is someone going to declare war on "political correctness".

That has been going on for years - sad to say the army for this war is very few but I sure hope one day they come to open their eyes and stop acting as if this could not happen!

Prophet - first of all I emailed ya back but never heard from ya again - now down to your comment bro - You said:
It's getting interesting, folks. Tune in next week when preaching the Gospel in church is considered intolerant and is censored. And we sit by and let the government wipe their behinds with our first amendment.

This again has already been happening. You can say 'Jesus Christ' as a cuss word on TV but God forbid ya actually say Jesus Christ is the only way to heaven and the red flags start to fly and the churches covenant with the government don't seem such a good idea after all. Never mind about tune in next week bro - it is already here. Not dissing ya just on my soap box LOL

It is not like the youth of America would read this, they are more interested in porn and violent video games.
I wonder if the ADF or ACLJ might help this person. We are in a world view war, so if you don't agree with the evolved left then you are a non beliver, even if you are a person of peace/

The article says that some were distributed. Is it possible that someone's local bookstore might have a copy or 2 they can snag before they're sent back for recall?

  • Fri Feb 13, 2009 4:40 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

So we have these antichrist yahoos censoring Christianity in written form, the imbeciles in congress trying to pass the "Fairness Doctrine" to censor Christians on the radio.

It's getting interesting, folks. Tune in next week when preaching the Gospel in church is considered intolerant and is censored. And we sit by and let the government wipe their behinds with our first amendment.

The beginning of the tribulation is near.

  • Fri Feb 13, 2009 4:17 pm Agree: 2   Disagree: 0

...and one more thing, Why is it that when it comes to insulting and blaspheming Christ and Christianity "political correctness" doesn't apply, but when we as Christians try to apply our country's obvious Christian heritage to the public stage, an outcry of "offense" is shouted from every corner?

  • Fri Feb 13, 2009 4:12 pm Agree: 3   Disagree: 0

So when are we going to start recalling things for being too heathen?

Maybe we can start with television, then Hollywood movies, we can eliminate certain video games, certain kinds of music...hip hop is a good place to start...and we can't forget most politicians, abortion clinics, pornographic materials and other immoral lifestyles.

But no, CHRISTIANITY is the target. Christianity is the one reprobates erroneously think is the source of the world's ills. It couldn't POSSIBLY be the reprobate culture we've invented. Yeah, right.

When is someone going to declare war on "political correctness" - the imbecility of our generation?

Its brother . . . and I believe that you are right when you say that we are (one more step toward a One World Religion). Remember the Lords grace is sufficient . . .

blacksho, where I would normally share your concern we've only heard one side, but I only had to read two things, "not politically correct enough" and "Duke" to let me know this smells of moderates and liberals not wanting to rock the boat and allow Christianity and the truths of Christianity to get walked all over in the process.

  • Fri Feb 13, 2009 1:32 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

This is just too much. Special thanks to Miss Katherine Phan for writing this story.

Common dictionaries have changed over the years. I still have an old dusty one that I occasionally pull out and compare new updated versions too. Evidently they are all just too Christian and too Western. We need to dump the defining moments in history and the personalities that made history, that way the 'power of truth' can be defined out of existence as an oxymoron of the ancients.

  • Fri Feb 13, 2009 12:08 pm Agree: 4   Disagree: 1

You said: It is possible that the book is full of vile untruths and deserves to be pulled from publication

If that was the case then 99.999% of the books in schools should be pulled also since the majority of schools in America teach lies all the time. They teach we came from apes - they teach that Islam is a religion of peace - they teach many other foolishness but God forbid someone have the balls to speak truth about the History of Christianity. Sounds like Hitler's idea. On no - I guess I will be removed as well since I am not politically correct

  • Fri Feb 13, 2009 11:52 am Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

Remember, we are only getting one side of the story. It is possible that the book is full of vile untruths and deserves to be pulled from publication. Mr. Kurian seems to me to be protesting rather more loudly than would be appropriate for an academic.
OTOH, it IS odd that it got all the way through the editorial process before this came up. I'd like to see it for myself.

Online4Him - what do you expect bro/sis? This is just one more step toward One World Religion. Where every faith is brought into one easy believism type religion. I have said for the past 10 years 'The best thing that could happen to Christianity is for it to become illegal.' Looks like true revival will finally happen since everyday I see more and more proofs of this coming true. Most thought (still do) I am insane and unloving. Go figure lol

Lets recall this Encyclopedia . . . we do not want to give an accurate account of history . . . lets give the public another revision of history that does not offend anyone . . . [simply unbelievable]!
