'Mary' Movie Aims for Easter 2010 Release

By Josh Kimball|Christian Post Reporter

A feature film about Jesus Christ’s mother, Mary, is scheduled to begin shooting in May and slated for a spring 2010 release through MGM, according to industry insiders.

Cast to play the widely revered figure in “Mary, Mother of Christ,” is Camilla Belle, who stars in the recently released sci-fi action movie “Push.” Jonathan Rhys Meyers, meanwhile, who starred alongside Scarlett Johansson in the dramatic thriller “Matchpoint,” will reportedly take on the double role of Gabriel and Lucifer.

Mary Aloe, one of the film’s producers, told the Hollywood Reporter that the upcoming film would not be a Christmas movie, but a film on a part of Mary’s life that has never been shown on the big screen before.

“It takes us through Mary's youth, young love, her life as a new mother and the triumph through the absolute terror of Herod the Great's reign,” she said. “It is truly a story of real female empowerment."

Though the last big Bible-based flick, “The Nativity Story,” pulled in only $37.6 million after its December 2006 release, “Mary” producers are likely hoping for figures closer to the $370 million that Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” racked up in 2004.

Alejandro Agresti (“The Lake House”) has been picked to direct the film and Media 8 Entertainment, which is debuting the project in Berlin at the European Film Market, will handle international sales and distribution, according to Hollywood Reporter.

Filmmakers have also reportedly been trying to recruit Al Pacino and Jessica Lange for the respective roles of King Herod and Anna the Prophetess, who prophesied about Jesus Christ at the Temple of Jerusalem. According to Variety magazine, the two Hollywood stars are in talks with Aloe Entertainment, which is putting together the New Testament ensemble for “Mary.”

MGM plans to release the film wide in 2,000-plus theaters April 2, 2010, which coincides with Good Friday.

A budget for the film has not yet been revealed, but it will likely be somewhere around the $30 million spent to produce “The Passion” or the $35 million it took to produce “The Nativity Story.”

    Cardinalbird,

Care to explain the 1260 days in this passage and the other passages which refer to the same time period? How do they all apply to Mary?

Let's get along on this glorious female role model, Mary, Christians. Woman need her influence in their lives, as opposed to hollywood females...

Regarding Revelation 12, 12:13 states "When the dragon realized that he had been thrown down to the earth, he bgan to pursue the woman who had given birth to the boy." How, then, can "the woman" be the church? Did the church give birth to itself? Let's define who the woman is, and it is Mary in my reading of this passage. Church does not breed church, but Jesus bred the church, and Jesus came from a woman, and her name is Mary. This single concept can and should rock your perspective that was fed to you by an erroneous Mary hating perpetrator...and who might that be? Some kind of dragon spirit? Think about it.

    Fleming,

Seriously, no one is belittling Mary . . . . Many simply do not elevate her to the point that the Roman church has . . . . Nowhere in scripture do we read of the Immaculate Conception, her perpetual virginity, she being co-mediator/co-redeemer or examples of anyone praying to her.

    Fullgospel,

Hey my friend . . . . Sorry but Revelation 12:17 is not referring to Mary but to the Church . . . when did Mary flee into the wilderness for twelve hundred and sixty days? This timeline of 1260 days (years) has always been applied to the church . . .it is also mentioned in the following passages: Daniel 12:7, Revelation 11:2, Revelation 11:3, Revelation 12:6, Revelation 12:14. How do you apply all these passages to Mary?

Gee, a story about the Mother of God couldn't help anyone, Spiritually? I guess she's not an indispensable part of the life of Christ? I guess she wasn't chosen by God Himself to bear His only Son? She wasn't there at Calvary or at the wedding feast where Jesus turned water into wine? She wasn't filled with the Holy Spirit to accept the angel's message that she would bear the Savior?

Why some people feel it necessary to belittle Mary's role in Scripture and the life of Christ, I'll never know. There's some kind of agenda at work there if you can't recognize the importance of Mary in Christianity.

It's interesting that we can talk about any woman in the Old Testament or New Testament, but when we talk about Mary, the mother of all Christians (Rev. 12:17), some people start getting nervous. That should be more a point of prayer among those who are nervous rather than a reason to stifle a good example of what God can accomplish in others when they are open to Him.

I say produce the movie and let the body of Christ support it.

" Real Female Empowerment " O, Please, How can this help anyone Spiritually,? A story about mary,? while Mary was indeed a blessed woman, She cannot save anyone's soul.

Tell the World about Jesus Christ, Tell them how he died on the Cross of Calvary for their sin, Tell them how, If they will accept Christ as Saviour they will make Heaven their home.

Tell them how Christ shed his blood for them, Then you will have made a movie that can make a difference.
