PCUSA Marks 500th Calvin Anniversary with Release of Documentary

By Aaron J. Leichman|Christian Post Reporter

More than 30,000 English-speaking congregations around the world trace their lineage through John Calvin, the 16th century theologian whose thoughts exerted considerable influence over major religious figures and entire religious movements.

And this year, many will be celebrating the 500th anniversary of his birth. Many more, however, will probably not.

"Many Presbyterians greet the news that 2009 will mark the 500th anniversary of John Calvin’s birth with a yawn, a roll of the eyes or even a derisive snort," writes Joseph D. Small, director of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)'s Office of Theology Worship and Education.

"Why are we so dismissive of our forebear in the Reformed tradition?" he asks in the Fall 2008 issue of ideas! For Church Leaders magazine.

As the Presbyterian theologian notes, Calvin is not a Reformed idol as some in and around his century turned out to be.

"Lutherans adore Martin Luther. Methodist hearts are strangely warmed by John Wesley. Anglicans even have a sardonic fondness for Henry VIII. But Presbyterians are uncertain about John Calvin and his legacy," notes Small.

And he says Calvin would be pleased by the reluctance to revere him.

"He did not want to be idolized by future generations," says Small.

Still, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the largest Presbyterian denomination in the nation, is hoping to help its congregants appreciate the ways in which Calvin's perspectives on Christian faith and life have shaped Reformed churches throughout the world, and continue to shape the Church today.

In celebration of the 500th anniversary of Calvin’s birth, the PC(U.S.A.)’s Office of Theology Worship and Education has released a 60-minute documentary to provide a compelling opportunity to re-examine the French theologian's life and thought.

John Calvin: His Life and Legacy combines insightful interviews of well-known Calvin scholars with creative and stunning visuals from such historical places as Geneva and Paris.

"This documentary will stimulate audiences and inspire a greater passion and understanding of their history as Reformed Christians," the documentary's promoters say.

The video is subtitled in six languages – Spanish, English, French, Dutch, German and Korean – and can be used together with a 20-page printable study guide and 51-page PowerPoint supplement, available in Spanish and English.

A three-minute trailer, additional resources regarding Calvin, and ways to order the DVD are available at www.pcusa.org/calvinjubilee/index.htm. A second one-minute trailer is available at youtube.com.

John Calvin’s 500th birthday on July 10 falls on a Friday.

"A yawn, a roll of the eyes, or a derisive snort" speaks volumes: of a denomination Reformed in name only in that of late it has proven false to its foundational standards by abandoning The Scriptures as the One rule of faith and life; but then 16c Geneva also had its 'Libertines'.
The testimony to Calvin's life, apart from his still unequaled Christian Institutes, was his faithful testimony to Jesus Christ. As for his grave-site, it remains unmarked just as he wished.

Salvation is the most basic, fundamental principle of Christianity and yet the professional preachers cannot agree on the requirements for salvation. If there was a single concept to cover their teaching it might read:

"You must be water baptized, but it's really just an OUTWARD sign of an INWARD change. If you INVITE Jesus into your heart, you must also MAKE Him Lord of your life, but that's only if He has PREDESTINED to accept you. If you speak in unknown TONGUES, that means you were filled with the Holy Spirit and you were SEALED until the day of redemption, however if you do BACKSLIDE and LOSE YOUR SALVATION, you can NEVER be saved again and it will be worse for you than if you had never been saved."

There are perhaps as many recipes for salvation as there are churches and ministers. It is so overwhelming to a lost man seeking hope for his soul that he will ultimately fail without a display of incredible perseverance. To try to simplify it somewhat, we should break down the various Christian churches’ doctrine into groups:

    A. Man is saved by faith.
    B. Man is saved by faith plus works.
    C. Select men are saved by God according to His divine pleasure.

When you die, you're going to be dead for a LONG time. It would behoove each of us to ignore those who have substited the Word of God for a perverted commercial enterprise and discover for ourselves what God says of salvation.

Here is the biblical salvation message in a nutshell:

Belief in the death, burial and resurrection of Christ as sufficient restitution for sin, providing Jesus’ justification and righteousness to man.

You’ll probably say, “I’ve heard that.” Probably you have within the context of a larger, perverted doctrine. Consider the doctrine that many of us have heard from radio teacher and preacher, J. Vernon McGee in his “Through the Bible” series:

    A. Man is saved by faith alone and sealed until the day of redemption without the possibility of losing salvation.
    B. Christian performance and holy living are indicative of salvation.
    C. Without an adequate demonstration of B, then A is negated. The man was never saved.

With McGee’s doctrine a man must perform well, (not to keep from losing his salvation) but to keep from disqualifying it altogether. Most preachers will start with a biblical truth and then condemn that truth in their next breath. By and large, their basic doctrine is that “Good People Go to Heaven / Bad People Go to Hell.” The bible tells us there are NO good people.

In truth, the only people you’ll find in Heaven are BAD people, saved by the grace, righteousness and justification of the Righteous One, in whom they placed their trust.
