Bold Enough to Face the Truth

By Joyce Meyer|Christian Post Guest Columnist

Do you have an easy life? Are you happy? Do you have plenty of money in the bank? Are all of your relationships going well? As you may have discovered, “the easy life” is a myth. Every life is full of challenges. No matter what it might look like on the outside, every day has difficulties that must be overcome.

Many people who look at my life now assume that things have always been easy for me. They see a successful ministry and the relationships that I have with my husband and my kids and they assume it’s all been a bed of roses. But those people have no idea what I’ve come through to get to where I am. They don’t know about the abusive childhood. They don’t know about the years of struggle, trying to build this ministry from nothing—the strain it put on my family, my friends, and even on my church.

Someone posed an interesting question to me not long ago. I was asked what I thought was the key that helped me through all the hardships I had to overcome. From the time I was young, my life was a wreck. Because of childhood abuse, I hardly had a single healthy relationship. And my relationship with my husband, Dave, required so much work just trying to overcome the dysfunctional thinking patterns that had been ingrained in me from childhood.

I don’t think I really began to get healthy until I learned to face the truth about myself. It was always so much easier to blame someone else for the problems I had. It took no courage for me to point the finger of blame in any direction other than myself, ignoring the important role I had to play in my own emotional well-being.

The Amplified Bible says, And you will know the Truth, and the Truth will set you free (John 8:32). And that is the key: to be bold and courageous enough to face the truth about yourself. That’s what brings true freedom—freedom that lasts. God’s nature is to confront issues and deal with them. We never win a victory by running away from our responsibilities.

It seems easier to try to change someone else so they are more pleasing to us or to blame them if they upset us or make us unhappy. It’s natural to look outside yourself for the cause of all of your problems. In fact, one of the primary strategies of the enemy to keep us from dealing with the issues that affect our behavior and attitudes is to get us to focus on others and what they are doing to keep us from being happy and achieving success.

We have to shake off that tendency! Think about the thoughts that have been running through your mind or the words that have been coming out of your mouth. Have you been blaming others for things that you should have accepted responsibility for?

I’ve been saying this for years, but it remains relevant today. We seem to look at everyone else through a magnifying glass, but somehow we look at ourselves through rose-colored glasses. When we look at ourselves, we don’t see problems. We don’t see bad attitudes. We don’t acknowledge our own bad behavior. But we seem to recognize all of those things in other people.

It is easy to put the blame on something or someone else. How many times have you said (or thought), “If you didn’t act the way you acted, then I wouldn’t be mad all the time!” Doesn’t that sound childish to you? Mature adults take responsibility for their own actions and attitudes. They don’t blame others. They are bold enough to face the truth about themselves. Just because someone else acts a certain way, you don’t have license to be mad all the time.

The psalmist David wrote in Psalm 51:6, Behold, You desire truth in the inner being; make me therefore to know wisdom in my inmost heart. David knew the danger of falling for the deception found in him. He realized that he had to face the truth in his “inmost heart.” He understood that being honest with himself was more important than anything else. In fact, he knew that it was the desire of God Himself!

How about you? Have you been avoiding the truth and blaming your negative actions and attitudes on others? Maybe it’s time for you take a step of courage—to find the boldness you need to take a hard look in the mirror and allow God to reveal the truth to you. It is the only way to be truly free!

Our devastating economic crisis affects all American families. And for almost two-thirds of Americans, pets are valued members of the family and they need your help. Americans are struggling to put food in pet food dishes, let alone the table.

Companion animals increase the quality of life for their owners as most pets are valuable members of many American families. But incomes are decreasing or disappearing and many families cannot afford to feed and provide proper care for their loving animals.

Americans need more help accessing food for their families, including their pets.

Please help to pass legislation that makes food more readily available for all Americans.

Due to the global economic crisis people are sacrificing a lot but they are not the only ones. Household pets, often considered to be a part of the family, are affected by financial hardship as well.

Owners of dogs, cats, rabbits, horses, chickens, even iguanas, pets of all kinds are finding it increasingly difficult to feed and care for their additional family members. And these animals are becoming strays.

The health and safety of pets depend on loving care which sometimes has substantial costs. Pet food and regular veterinary care are necessities for companion animals, but the costs add up quickly.

Food and care costs have escalated while owners incomes remain fixed or are declining. Small pet care has become unaffordable to most, and owners are allowing their dogs, cats to stray.

But there is a glimmer of hope. Some area food pantries are recognizing the desperate need for animal care, and are distributing pet food along with their grocery donations. This is NOT yet available in EVERY COUNTY across America, especially here in Florida.

Where I live in Suwannee County, Florida, my search for help with food or care has left me empty handed. The closest "Pet Food Pantry" is too far to drive, some 60 or even 200 miles. EVERY COUNTY in America needs to offer help so pet owners can provide and to make this help accessible to all.

My thoughts are that if help were provided to low income families to provide for their pets, this would free up worries and neglect, also help to provide in other areas of our lives and keep these animals "home."

EVERYONE let's tell Congress, County, City, State Commissioners, Local Humane Societies and shelters, Local Newspapers, churches, ANYONE who might care. Tell community officials of how this concern needs immediate attention.

Get the word out across America showing concern for this escalating dilemma of our needs for food and reliable basic medical care for our pets during the current economic crisis.

Please help those struggling to accommodate their needs to provide better, and keep these hungry, sick and abandoned "underprivileged" animals off our streets.

Living the "Christian Life" is a myth. Only one person lived it and that is Christ. Joyce Meyer focuses on herself instead of focusing on the person of Christ and what He did. Being a Christian has shifted from learning what God's word says to making your life better. It's not about you. It's about Jesus Christ dying for your sins (all of them) 2000 years ago. And when you put your faith in what He did, you are sealed with the Holy Spirit that guides you. You now are free from the sin you had the moment you were born. It had nothing to do with you, you got that from Adam. But He died for you to take that punishment that was meant for you because of your inherited sin nature. Your not a sinner because you sin! You were born one but because of what Jesus did ALREADY, you don't have to stay one. It's your choice.

Joyce Meyers - I wanted to express my gratitute to you and the Spirit that works through you. Though I was a Christian, I was filled with pride that kept me from really experiencing the Joy of salvation. I didn't go to Church because I "understood all that". I don't remember what was said in one of your TV ministies, but after listening to you I started regularly attending Church again and I could not be happier.

how can you be bold & courageous to face the truth when it all points to sin. christianity does not have any answers to the issues about life just SIN. and when you try to move forward, guess what they would say: do not rely on your own strength-that is a sin! christianity is all focus on sin! that is why being a christian, you are a loser bec. of the childish, immature teaching you get from christianity in the name of obedience & humility. they quote verses to look & sound good for jesus, but in the end you have to FIGURE IT OUT! and look at these televangelist, they are at peace. WHY? they do not have to work, but they are rich - they have multi-million $$$ homes & luxury cars. they are hypocrites! they do not practice what they preach.
