Disturbing Justice Department Nominees

By Chuck Colson|Christian Post Guest Columnist

President Obama continues to fill out his Cabinet and sub-Cabinet positions. These are the officials who really run the U.S. government.

Some of his Justice Department appointments are causing particular alarm among Christians.

The three top appointees—David Ogden, Thomas Perrelli, and Elena Kagan—are, in the words of Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council, “three of President Obama’s most objectionable nominees. . . . [They] have a legacy of championing abortion on demand, legalized obscenity, special rights for homosexuals, and euthanasia.”

Let’s look at these.

David Ogden, the President’s nominee for deputy attorney general, is now waiting for the full Senate to vote on his nomination. Ogden has been a consistent advocate for the pornography industry. He has an especially disturbing record of opposing laws against child pornography. For example, he once argued that a law designed to ensure that models were of legal age would “burden too heavily and infringe too deeply on the right to produce First Amendment protected material.”

Ogden has also disputed the adverse mental health effects of abortion on women.

Thomas Perrelli is a name you may already know. Before becoming the President’s nominee for assistant attorney general, Perrelli served on Michael Schiavo’s legal team in the Terri Schiavo case. He helped fight the successful battle to allow Michael to have Terri starved to death, even though she was not suffering from any terminal illness and even though her parents offered to assume the entire burden of her care.

This appointment is a vivid reminder of the President’s statement last year that he, Obama, when he was a senator, had made a “mistake” in voting to help save Terri’s life. It seems that he’s now determined to correct that “mistake” in future life-and-death cases. Perrelli is currently awaiting a vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Then there’s Elena Kagan, who’s before the Judiciary Committee, nominated to be solicitor general. According to Perkins, “[Kagan] and other law school officials sued to overturn the Solomon amendment, adopted by Congress to ensure that law schools could not use homosexual rights rules to deny U.S. Armed Forces recruiters access to law school campuses.”

In other words, Kagan wants the military barred from on-campus recruiting because the military supposedly discriminates against homosexuals. Also, she has advocated continued federal funding for abortion clinics.

Well, Perkins is right when he observes that these three, if confirmed, “will [help] determine U.S. legal policy for years to come.”

The battle for life, for traditional marriage, for protecting our children—born and yet to be born—seems never ending. But now is no time to grow weary in proclaiming the truth and in doing good.

I urge you—call your Senators and ask for a “no” vote on Ogden, Perrelli, and Kagan.

Now, I have no illusions, with the political lineup the way it is in Washington, that we could block these nominations. But it’s terribly important that the Congress know that ordinary Americans are watching them, and are gravely concerned. They need to know that there are millions in this country ready to fight to defend life and the family.

Some “no” votes in the Senate will at least send that message.

I pray for my country. We are unable to discern the signs of our times, recognize our sins (or even acknowlwdge that they are sins), learn from our past or prepare for our future. Prayer has always been our first and most important action, and we now need all Christians to pray to our Lord for forgiveness and guidance.

May America realize what it has done and repent before it's too late.

These 3 could do untold damage to the fabric of America which we may not be able to fix.

At this point, I'm not sure what can be done further in the political arena. We waged out best war and the forces of darkness overwhelmed us.

My counsel for the church is to return to its roots and prepare for an influx of souls. As the darkness in our power structures increases, more people are going to lose faith in the world's systems and be more willing to confront their need of the spiritual foundation found only in Jesus. The church needs to embody the incarnation communally, and bring the living message into the dark places.

For a model, study the church in China. There is an excellent 4-part video series on video.google.com, chronicling how they survived decades of vicious persecution and in fact thrived. It's enough to make quickly tire of the state of the Western church.

Could be worse. He could appoint 150 people to his administration from a fourth-tier lawschool of dubious credentials!

I believe we are closer to the end times than most would believe. Anti christianity and worldly beliefs are rampant. We are challenged to overcome diversity in a world where the rich and powerful are evil. We need to be strong and while our bodies and mind age and are filled with these ideals of the world around us, our Souls are saved by Christ and should be joyous. Remain faithful unto the Lord and ignore the ignorance of those who oppose us.

I forgot to click on the appropriate feeling icon, in my earlier response. These issues outrage me. I am a Chrstian, I love my God and oppose all those with an agenda not found in the bible and christian beliefs worldwide. We need to let our voices be heard with the same voice we use to praise the Lord.

Abortion, Pornography, Health issues bot mental and physical will always be brought up by non christians in the political arena. we can only speak out and let our views be known to encourage others on the fence to come to our way of life and thinking. Pray that those issues will resolve themselves in our favor.

Those who track such things have concluded that the Family Research Council is a hate group--based not on the policy views of its members, but on the way the organization promotes them. Specifically, it consistently cites "studies" known to be grossly fraudulent in its editorial pieces, and it has been caught soliciting the mailing lists of racist and white supremacist groups to build its membership.
