Megachurch Pastor: Where's My Bailout?

By Lillian Kwon|Christian Post Reporter

As large financial institutions receive hundreds of billions of dollars in bailout funds, some of which have paid for bonuses this year, a megachurch pastor in South Carolina is asking, "Where's my bailout?"

"That's the attitude of our nation today: Where's my bailout?" said Perry Noble, senior pastor of NewSpring Church in Anderson, S.C.

Noble believes everyone, especially those in the church, are in "freakout mode" because they've been watching the news, which has been plastering record unemployment rates, stock market drops and financial fraud cases around the clock on television screens and the Internet.

The problem, Noble told his 10,000-member church in a sermon earlier this month, is that people have taken their eyes off Jesus and set them on the things of the world and on the economy.

"The reason our country's in such bad financial shape is we let our need for greed consume us. 'I saw this, I gotta have it,'" he said.

"When the stock market started going down, your god died and you don't see him resurrecting any time soon," Noble noted. "You think the economy has a hold on you when you don't understand that God actually has a hold on the economy."

Noble is one of many pastors across the country preaching on finances and offering scriptural support on how to act during an economic downturn. With hundreds of thousands of people affected by lay-offs and smaller budgets, churches have stepped in to provide a biblical perspective as well as practical advice on money.

But the economy isn't as bad as many people make it out to be, at least not in the eyes of Noble.

"Let's stop lying and say the economy's bad. Let's just say it's not as good as it has been," the senior pastor said.

"Probably, nobody in this room slept under a bridge last night. Probably, nobody in this room is going to have to go without a meal today," Noble told NewSpring congregants.

The Anderson church pastor preferred to call it a "struggling" economy rather than a "bad" one, especially when compared to the economies of countries like Kenya and especially when the two biggest problems in the United States are consumer debt and obesity, he noted.

"A nation that has consumer debt and obesity as its top two problems, it's not because we don't have enough, it's because we don't manage what we have well," he plainly stated.

Urging NewSpring congregants to start practicing discipline in the area of finances, Noble announced that the church will be offering a class on how to eliminate debt, develop a plan and calculate the amount needed for retirement, among other financial planning advice. The class will be offered later this month and taught by financial planning and counseling pastor Joseph Sangl.

"I believe a bailout will occur when our bondage to our bling is broken because some of us in this room are addicted to bling and that's why you need a bailout," Noble said.

"God will take care of you but He's waiting on you to put Him first."

"God will take care of you but He's waiting on you to put Him first."

how do you do that? as pastors & televangelist would say

'give your 10%' & god will bless you. oh so that is why the messengers of god can afford to buy nice houses & luxury cars.

"The reason our country's in such bad financial shape is we let our need for greed consume us. 'I saw this, I gotta have it,'" he said.

what hypocrisy, pastors have multimillion $$$ homes & luxury cars & full benefits.

"quote": If you want to be scriptural the book of acts records that on tow different occasions three thousand or more were saved in a day. By our definintion in America the Holy Spirit aided the apostles in obtaining a mega-church. God does not have a problem with mega- churches.

True, 3,000 were saved. This happens at revivals and crusades too... but everyone there doesn't form a mega church! Now, think: they met in homes, which shows they were not mega churches, also, knowing they didn't have vehicles, we know they didn't travel miles and miles and to different towns to the HUGE church, they went LOCALLY. They met DAILY... think about it. The people in Corinth went to the church in Corinth - also, there were the churches in Galatia... and on and on... how can you reach to your LOCAL community if you're going 45-50 miles out of your own town? Why do you feel you need to do that? I just don't understand. When I see billboards in a town advertising a church 30 miles from there it goes all through me, like the churches in THAT town aren't good enough? The $ used on those billboards could be put to such better use than trying to take someone from their own town to a church 30 miles away. Sorry, just my soap box.

The problem with the mega church and the "basic teaching" that was earlier posted, is that toooo many never attend the "small group" to learn the depth of christianity... so what you have is alot of people that are attending "church" but not knowing the true CHRIST. It's a feel-good gospel that's being taught, I don't buy into thinking small churches get too deep thing, if you love someone, say your spouse, don't you want to know as much about them as you can? So how much more should you want to know about your Savior? These mega churches are leading alot of people down the wrong road.... but hey, their numbers and offerings are UP... (so it's gotta be good right? NOT!)

the bottom line is this: the day is rapidly approaching that there will be no electricity, no running water, and no phones. So does that mean that those who can't to a church on Sunday will be left to nothing? I say not!!!! Don't depend on a minister to feed your soul. You better get it for yourself on a daily basis. And what is going to happen to all these richy people in ministry? time will tell.

"Why do they have mega churches anyway. When a Baptist church near me started running out of room, they built another one. "

That's because we can't build fast enough. We've had about 7 different churches come out of our "mega-church". Many of them are now "mege-churches" themselves. Our church went from 75 to 7000 in 15 years even with helping start all those other churches.

Much of it is the message. Most mega-churches preach "milk" in the services. Very simple and basic Christianity the younger believers can understand. The "meat" is taught in small groups. There are many young Christians who have not been taught how to grow. They are hungry for the basics while many pastors of smaller churches are wanting to have a mini-semenary Sunday mornings.

Our pastor makes it a point to only use words everyone can understand. God wants people to grow vs. being impressed by our vast knowledge and religious vocabulary.

First Focus on Jesus, Got that! Now fill the offering baskets so that I may live like a rich pastor, big house, nice cars and boats, great vacations, dining in the best restaurants, and then let me tell you not to worry. Sorry people I am tired of the mega church pastors, they are mega for one reason, people have itching ears. So Jesus left his Kingdom to come down here for us and lived how? The Apostle Paul went to a 4 year seminary and got his PHD when? Wait. Christianity is so confused these day's, I really don't want to hear economics from a mega-church pastor!

First let me say that their nothing wrong a mega-church. Dont get hung up on the term. If you want to be scriptural the book of acts records that on tow different occasions three thousand or more were saved in a day. By our definintion in America the Holy Spirit aided the apostles in obtaining a mega-church. God does not have a problem with mega- churches.

What he has a problem with is the teaching that it has to be large to be from God. That is not scriptural. Those who Pastor churches with far less members are just as effective as a mega-church. It is not the size of the church, but the heart of the people.

Lets face it, our culture has infected churches. I agree with the pastor. Why are so many believers going nuts over a bad economy? The word of God tells us not to worry about what we will eat or wear. God has promised to take care of us when we put him first. Believers must realize you do not have to have everythig you see.

the mega churches that I have some knowledge of, are not in the best of shape. trouble trouble trouble everywhere. too many people. too much going on that is unaccounted for. and then there are the very small churches who never grow beyond 50 or 60 because they like the rut that they are in. this stimulus thing is a joke. a bad joke.

They have a satalite church near the one I go to. They're a great bunch! Just like he was saying, my wife and I have little to know credit lines/cards/whatever. Guess what...the economy isn't really affecting us. Those who live by debt...die by debt...so to speak.

Israel was onced faced with a decision....to obey God, or obey the world.

    Obediance is greater than sacrifice.
