Over 100,000 U.S. Christians Express Solidarity with Israel

By Jennifer Riley|Christian Post Reporter

Correction appended

Outspoken and ardent Israel supporter Pastor John Hagee presented members of Congress this week with a petition signed by over 100,000 American Christians expressing solidarity with the state of Israel.

Hagee, who is founder and chairman of Christian United for Israel (CUFI), met with several members of Congress on Tuesday to deliver the petition that declared Jewish people have a right to live in the ancient land of Israel, there is no excuse for acts of terrorism against Israel and Israel has a right to defend its citizens. Signers also pledged to speak out on behalf of Israel until attacks against the country stop.

“Israel is America’s closest and most trusted ally. We are committed to steadfastly supporting the Jewish State as she fights to defend the democratic values that we all hold dear,” Hagee said in a statement. “As our leaders in Washington make decisions about American foreign policy in the Middle East, it is important for them to know that Christians across the country remain solidly committed to a strong US-Israel relationship.”

Hagee is the founding and senior pastor of the 18,000-member Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, Texas. He is often accused of subscribing to Dual Covenant theology, but denied holding such a belief in a statement to The Jerusalem Post in 2006.

In the statement, he said he does not “believe or teach Dual Covenant.”

He added that he had “made it a practice for 25 years not to target Jews for conversion” at any Night to Honor Israel events hosted by CUFI. But if Jews “inquire about our faith at a later time, we give them a full scriptural presentation of redemption.”

According to the Dual Covenant view, Jews have a separate covenant with God and can gain salvation without accepting the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Everyone else in the world is bounded by the covenant that they must believe in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ as atonement for man’s sin in order to gain salvation.

During the 26th annual meeting of the Lausanne Consultation on Jewish Evangelism (LCJE) – North America in March, leaders in the field of Jewish evangelism called on proponents of Christian Zionism to be transparent with other believers on whether Jewish evangelism is part of their theological belief system.

“We believe they (some Christian Zionists) can dilute the gospel message by offering comfort apart from Christ, discourage evangelical Christians from witnessing to their Jewish friends and divert gospel resources which could be channeled toward Jewish evangelism,” read a resolution passed by the task force.

It added, “Therefore, we call on the leading proponents of Christian Zionism today to be transparent with Christians on whether Jewish evangelism is present in their theology.”

U.S. Christians, evangelicals in particular, are the strongest and most vocal supporters of Israel in the world. Israel’s minister of tourism said in 2006 that evangelical Christians make up about a third of the U.S. tourists to Israel.

Correction: Friday, March 27, 2009:

In a March 26, 2009, article about 100,000 American Christians expressing support for Israel through a petition, The Christian Post incorrectly reported that Pastor Hagee adheres to Dual Covenant theology. The Christian Post confirmed with a spokesman for Hagee that the pastor has stated in the past that he does not hold such a belief.

wjneill - My comment had absolutely nothing to do with the USS Liberty incident. It was in reference to your statement about Israel "murdering" women and children in Gaza. You seem to use the term murder quite liberally , maybe you should look up it's meaning and realize that there's actually a war going on.

As for the USS Liberty incident : both the US and Israeli governments conducted inquiries into what actually happened and issued reports concluding that the attack was a tragic mistake , caused by the confusion of the identity of the USS Liberty. I'm aware that not everyone believes the content of these reports but logic surely has to prevail here. Israel had nothing to gain but much to lose if the incident was deliberate , it could only have been a tragic blunder. On December 17 , 1987 the issue was officially closed by the 2 countries. It's over , case closed , let it go.

Smurfdog, what is the relationship between 9/11 and the Israeli attack upon the USS Liberty? Please elaborate upon this curiosity in great detail.
    -
I would've expected the US Naval carrier battle group within 60 miles of the USS Liberty to launch an immediate combat air patrol and attack the Israeli aircraft and naval forces as retribution for killing 23 US naval and civilian personnel.
    -
Again, please explain your statement because I do not find any relationship. Are you stating the USS Liberty, flying the US flag and therefore a vessel of a presumed Israeli ally in very plain and obvious view, posed a threat to Israel and therefore Israel was therefore justified in attacking it?
    -
So, in your rather twisted and perverted logic, the United States represented a terrorist organization to Israel, eh? You're a real sicko.

    wjneill ,

would you have expected the US government not to respond after the events of 9/11 ? Likewise then , Israel has a duty to protect it's civilian population from a terrorist organisation who the people in Gaza voted for. What would you have expected the Israelis to do ?

    mfenemore ,

Israel's population is 80% Jewish. It has public holidays honoring Jewish feasts and sacred days. Jews around the world view it as an ancestoral homeland. Hebrew is the most widely spoken language. What's racist about that ?

I would not have used the term "real Jew" but child of God in the bible study you mention. Replacement theology replaces the Jews with the church , I don't subscribe to that stuff.

Support for Israel should be forthcoming ONLY, with great emphasis upon ONLY, after Israel has given a complete, detailed, and legally-correct statement that explains why the air force and navy of that nation attacked the USS Liberty in June, 1967, resulting in the deaths of 23 US naval and civilian personnel.
    -
John Hagee is nothing but an apologist for a nation that has no qualms about the murder of US citizens on the high seas and as such, he is a reprehensible charlatan.
    -
The good citizens of Israel can simmer in their own juices until they and their government atone for their sins. Especially when the rabbis of the IDF condone the murders of women and children in the Gaza Strip by Israeli soldiers.
    -
Let Hagee and any other Israeli appeaser justify that.

Seems to me, by calling it a "Jewish state" you may as well call it a racist state.

Under the New Covenant, Christians are the true Jews. The following is the teaching of William Barclay, author of the famous Daily Bible Study Series:

    (i) Abraham is not the father of those who have been circumcised; he is the father of those who make the same act of faith in God as he made. He is the father of every man in every age who takes God at his word as he did. This means that the real Jew is the man who trusts God as Abraham did, no matter what his race is. All the great promises of God are made not to the Jewish nation, but to the man who is Abrahamâ

The petition was to show support for Israel , not to show support for Hagee's Dual-Covenant teaching.
As for the term "political Israel" ? As opposed to what ? The State of Israel has a definite Jewish identity. Any support for them is support for the Jewish people. Believers who even think about elbowing the Jews out of the equation should study Romans chapter 11 a little more closely.

John Hagee is a false teacher. Any preacher or teacher who believes there are two people of God--two ways to eternal life, is operating in another spirit.

Hagee and his group CUFI are more interested in standing with political Israel, then they are taking the gospel of Jesus Christ to them or to anyone within the middle-east.

I would never sign his petition.

I didn't get to sign the petition, but I certainly would have!
