Huckabee: Life is Perishable; Either Use It or Lose It

By Michelle A. Vu|Christian Post Reporter

Life is like perishable food – you either use it or lose it, said the former Baptist preacher turned politician Mike Huckabee to students at Liberty University on Monday.

Former Baptist preacher and Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee speaks to students at Liberty University about what it means to be like Jesus in Lynchburg, Va. on Monday, March 30, 2009.

In a sermon given during the school’s chapel service, Huckabee told an amusing story about his middle child David when he was younger. At three years old, his son had turned off the freezer and all the food had thawed forcing his parents to make the choice between either cooking all the food and giving it to friends and neighbors or throwing it away.

The Huckabees decided to cook everything and serve their co-workers and neighbors. At the end of the night, Huckabee thought hard about what God was trying to teach him and realized that just like the food in the freezer, life was also perishable.

“The truth about perishables is this - you either use it or lose it,” Huckabee said, according to a video made available by Liberty University. “You either give it away or throw it away. And to be like Jesus means that when it ultimately comes down to it we are like Him in that we don’t throw away our lives we give our lives away.”

Throwing away one’s life is like investing in things that won’t last, said Huckabee, who is also a Fox News political commentator. Those who follow Jesus don’t throw their life away to “silly, dumb, valueless things,” but rather give their life in service, sacrifice, in selflessness to other people.

Reading from Philippians 2, Huckabee preached about what it looks like to be Jesus with the sermon title “To Be Like Jesus is Okay!” Jesus is an encourager, selfless, humble, and modeled what serving means.

Many people, Huckabee said, want to be someone else and they pick a hero and practice to be like that person. People have inferiority complexes and that is why they want to be somebody else because they don’t feel they are good enough, or smart enough, or able enough to do certain things, Huckabee said.

“We all live like that and it’s not terrible to want to be like someone else depending who that someone else is,” he said. “But sometimes I’m afraid we end up wanting to be like the wrong people.

“There’s one person that it’s ok to want to be like and that is if you want to be like Jesus. That’s ok,” said the former Republican presidential candidate. “Unfortunately a lot of people don’t grow up necessarily wanting to be like Jesus, they want to be like everybody but Jesus.”

He also emphasized the importance of accepting one’s uniqueness.

“He has given you not only a physical DNA but he has given you a spiritual DNA that is unique to you and unlike anyone else who has ever lived in the entire world,” Huckabee said. “God’s purpose for you is only for you. For you to try to be completely like someone else is to defy your physical and spiritual DNA. And it would never work.”

For part of the message, the former Arkansas governor spoke about how Christians should interpret the economic downturn from a faith perspective. He said this crisis may be “the greatest opportunity for spiritual revolution” in his lifetime as people understand the “emptiness of stuff and the fullness of Christ.”

“Do you know the greatest value of knowing Jesus Christ is that somebody can steal everything you have - Bernie Madoff can make off with the last dime you ever made - but if you know Jesus Christ no one can reach into your heart and steal everlasting life from you,” Huckabee declared to Liberty’s students. "But if your life is tied to something invested on Wall Street, God help you because it can disappear tomorrow.

“If your life is invested in something eternal, then nobody can steal that. … That is why following Jesus makes a whole lot of more sense than living your whole life just to be rich or to be famous,” he said. “Those things are fleeting but Jesus is not; it is the only thing worth living for.”

Huckabee’s message at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., was the last of four events he spoke at in the Lynchburg-area starting from Sunday. Earlier on Monday, he spoke to hundreds of pastors about the Christian Values Network, an organization that allows Christians to contribute to their favorite charity or church by shopping online and making purchases they normally would.

salt, I've heard several Pastors share how they were saved through their own preaching!

shooter & salt, by no means am I saying mike is not a Christian, but the harshness of his post towards Christianity as a whole really threw me for a loop, which generated my post to him. I know he has a hardtime with the organized church and the political aspects of some Christian issues, but this post was different and that raised my concern.

"mike, I had made the presumption that you were a Christian, but with your last post I'm wondering? Why all the bitterness and anger?"

Believer: I went through a period of bitterness and anger due to the hurt inflicted by the "church". I don't know anything about Mike or his circumstances but it took me a while to mellow. That anger was never turned toward God and it took a while too to realize that people in the church really think they are doing God's will and standing up for what is right. What they don't see it the damage they do. Now I am at a place where I see my own responsibility in what transpired and it is so much easier to extend the grace to others that Jesus extends to me. Through it all however I was a Christian that never changed.

"If Huckabee really thinks that Jesus Christ is the answer to the woes of America and not government then why did he leave the ministry and pursue a job in politics"

    Grace2:
What makes you think he left the ministry? I believe he can do more for Christ in the "trenches" where the lost are, than behind a pulpit trying to live up to the many expectations of churchanity!

how can you USE your life when christianity associate & point everything to sin! you end up throwing you life away bec you are preoccupied & brainwashed in the name of obedience, humility & doing the 'work' of god.

Everyone must use their life, as they serve a Holy God in the passion (gift) that He gives. Yes, obedience and humility are clearly a couple of things we can use as a litmus test to examine ones self with fear and trembling to see if they is really of the faith.

First off I would like to commend Huckabee for what he is doing by being a witness and showing Christ's love through his actions. This next part is in response to something Grace2 wrote. "If Huckabee really thinks that Jesus Christ is the answer to the woes of America and not government then why did he leave the ministry and pursue a job in politics orginially and now as a political commentator? It doesn't make any sense. Is God not important to him any more? He can never reach the lost for Christ being a Fox Political Commentator."

I disagree with this statement. How can you say he will never reach the lost for Christ being a Fox Political Commentator? That is one of the best places to be to reach the lost. millions of non-believers see his program are exposed to Huckabee, who wheres the love of Christ on his sleeve. Saying that he can't reach the lost for Christ as a FPC is like saying Jesus couldn't reach the lost for Christ by hanging out with sinners. Jesus didn't hang out only in the synagogues, but out where people were hurting. Huckabee is reaching more people and has reached more people than he ever would if he just stayed in his comfort zone. Why are people so afraid to get their hands dirty and step out of where they feel safe? Being a Christian isn't something where we can sit in our comfort zones doing nothing, but putting ourselves out there and actively reaching out to those who are lost. And who are we to call others hypocrites, that is judging and I myself is a hypocrite at times. Why are we attacking our brothers and sisters, when we should be with them helping in fulfilling the great commission? Fighting within the Church(followers of Christ) gets us nowhere and actually hinders us from doing what God has called us too.

I'm not a very strong Christian and the recent passing of my father has helped me get closer to Christ. I am not sure what calling God has for me and the way I preform my duties to him may change multiple times in my life but for now I have grown to have a strong drive to spread a better morality to Christians and non-Christians alike and to show how Christianity can be the root of good morality. This country and government needs more strong moral leadership and Huckabee's messages have been a strong influence in my life and has helped me be a stronger Christan. I thank God that Huckabee is where he is today so I am able to see the light and get back on the path.

ender, considering no politician Christian or otherwise is going to make decisions that please everyone and is not perfect then I'm sure they will make mistakes, I do not think any of us are saying he is perfect but at the same time his record indicates that for the most part he has made decisions that are God honoring and pleasing to God.

Once again I see that this crowd is as tolerant of anything less than glowingly positive of Huckabee is as well received as telling the gay community that their behavior is a sin.
Flippant labelling remarks are not debate nor do they demonstrate that you have actually investigated what he actually did.

As a resident of Arkansas, I would strongly suggest all of you look closely into his time as governor. I have made remarks about his actual performance before and found a less than tolerant reaction from posters.

"and lead us into all truth, not just through the word of God only, the Spirit of Christ can give you a revelation through things you encounter during the day, and even words of wisdom, knowledge and even the prophetic, unless you think spiritual gifts were only for the original apostles."
    ----------------------------------------------------------
"not just through the word of God only" (!)

Let's not be quick in dismissing the Word of God as the source through which the Holy Spirit guides. All 'guidance' must be in line with what the Word of God says.

If not, then you'll have the likes of Joesph Smith saying, "thus saith the Lord" and look what happened there.

There are many voices that compete with the still small voice of God within us and although He works through our circumstances to illuminate a biblical truth, all guidance must agree with the Word of God. Too many Christians today have put aside study of the Word and feel they are being guided by the Holy Spirit through their thoughts and end up acting in some very unbiblical ways.

If the battle is for the mind of man, then our enemy and the flesh have an influence over our thoughts if we neglect the Word of God. Abide in Christ.

Mikeymike885, His spirit is not some genie inside of you guiding you in what to eat or who to marry or where to live. He guides you by his word and it is never wrong. You are guiding your life by your feelings and circumstances which change. This is why we have so many Benny Hinns in the world. We are not Israel. God dealt with Israel under the law and they were His covenant people. We are not His covenant people under the law being led by a cloud. They did not have the total word of God as we do today. We are not sheep being led. We are now to be workmen in the faith. We are to know what the word of God says and that's how we live life. Not by your feelings or a hunch or anything like that. The Bible is not a buffet you can choose from. Two different people are being dealt with.

  • Wed Apr 01, 2009 1:08 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 2

What does "following Jesus" do? How are you doing at that? The Holy Spirit working through us by studying His word is how we follow Jesus. Not by trying to be like Him and doing things under the law but by finding out what He's doing now in the dispensation of grace. Jesus came to Israel in His earthly ministry and when you follow Him there instead of following what He told Paul, you are following another gospel. Jesus said: I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

    Grace and Believer -
I think that we have missed the point in so many ways when we believe that because someone preaches a sermon on Sunday morning that somehow that is more holy than someone who is involved in politics. Everyone who is a believer is in a sacred vocation whether they are paid a salary from a church or a denomination. Jesus calls us to follow him no matter where they may lead us. Are we willing to follow him? People are shepherds (pastors) whether they have a title or not because they are shepherding. People are elders, not because they have a title or been appointed, but because they are eldering (I know, nade up word). Everything that we do is sacred to Father and our lives is our spiritual worship, not going to a meeting or being part of the clergy.

grace, people are called of God to ministry and the specifics of that calling are between them and God and no one else. I went from bi-vocational, to full-time, and now as a Director of Missions I get to fill pulpits and preach revivals. That is God's working in my life, but I would never say every Southern Baptist Pastor should follow that same ministry path. It is between each called person and God to decide the ministry path God has for them.

OK believer, you know more about what goes on in your association than I do.

I am interested in knowing what are some of the reasons why these men who God called to be full time Pastors left that calling to pursue secular jobs while only serving God as part-time ministers? Have they ever shared that with you?

  • Tue Mar 31, 2009 4:44 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 2

first hey cowboy- jesus himself said that the Holy Spirit would reside w/in us and guide us as our counselor and lead us into all truth, not just through the word of God only, the Spirit of Christ can give you a revelation through things you encounter during the day, and even words of wisdom, knowledge and even the prophetic, unless you think spiritual gifts were only for the original apostles. which i submit to you is wrong, read joel ch 2. anyway i am always let down when i read comments on here of one believer judging another. jesus said the world would know that he was who he said he was by our unity, what unity

I think there need to be some real grace extended to Huckabee. I was at Liberty University in the heyday of the Moral Majority. It was idealistic but a worthy effort. Did it work? To the degree that it reached the goals they set out to achieve in abortion, special rights for homosexuals, taxes, Israel, etc., it's a mixed bag but overall I would say no. It did however awaken Christians to their duty to be involved in their government process if nothing else at least by voting. In a book written by ex-MM executive and journalist Cal Thomas, Falwell agreed that it was more important to change the world through faith and not the ballot box.

Huckabee? Why should we excoriate a brother who is a believer but wants to engage in the marketplace of ideas? Christians are not required to leave their brains at the exit of the church door. We all have much to contribute. My only caution is that we don't say the government is the answer and we don't identify God with a specific political party. There is no reason to be offensive to a non-believer where an offense is not necessary. The gospel is already an offense according the Bible. Let's deal with that one. That's the essential one....and the life-giving one.

  • Tue Mar 31, 2009 3:26 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

grace, as a matter of fact several of our bi-vocational Pastors did just that and I've had Pastors who have left the pastoral ministry to go to another occupation but are still active in the preaching ministry by filling pulpits, interim work, and preaching revivals.

I don't have a bit of problem with Mike Huckabee being a govenor or a political commentator on Fox or running for President. We have a real problem as followers of Jesus because we separate what God does not separate and that is sacred and secular. There is no dividing line. There is no clergy and layity in God's world. There is just those who follow after Jesus and those who don't. Calling a person a hypocrite or not following his vocation or just criticizing someone because they don't do things the way you would want (unless it is actual public sin) is doing the Holy Spitit's job. We need to stay out of doing what God says is His area of expertise.

  • Tue Mar 31, 2009 2:05 pm Agree: 1   Disagree: 1

Why would God do that to have you learn a lesson? He gave you everything you need in His word, the Bible. His word is complete. We are not Israel under the law but the body of Christ under grace. It' not, if you do this I will do that. You have already been blessed with ALL spiritual blessing!

Huckabee: U.S. gave up on religion

    By Linda Caillouet

SALT LAKE CITY - Government may have dropped the ball in modern American society, but religion dropped it first,....

"The reason we have so much government is because we have so much broken humanity," he said. "And the reason we have so much broken humanity is because sin reigns in the hearts and lives of human beings instead of the Savior."

"Government knows it does not have the answer, but it's arrogant and acts as though it does," Huckabee said. "Church does have the answer but will cowardly deny that it does and wonder when the world will be changed."

  • Tue Mar 31, 2009 1:20 pm Agree: 4   Disagree: 2

    Part 2

Huckabee also explained why he left pastoring for politics.

"I didn't get into politics because I thought government had a better answer. I got into politics because I knew government didn't have the real answers, that the real answers lie in accepting Jesus Christ into our lives."

He compared his entry into politics to "getting inside the dragon's belly," adding, "There's not one thing we can do in those marbled halls and domed capitols that can equal what's done when Jesus touches the lives of a sinner."

The most basic unit of government is not the city council, quorum court or state legislature, Huckabee said. "It is Mom and Dad raising kids and teaching them respect for authority, others and God."

The nation has descended gradually into crisis, Huckabee said, and repairing the damage needs to be gradual, too. He said the solution is simple: faith in Christ.

  • Tue Mar 31, 2009 1:20 pm Agree: 1   Disagree: 6

    Part 3

He also spoke of his early misconceptions of his duties as a pastor.

"In one of the first churches I was assigned to, I thought I was supposed to be the captain of a warship leading the congregation into a battle against spiritual darkness," he said.

"But they wanted the captain of the Love Boat. They just wanted everybody to be happy. It was not about how many people were won to Christ or how many teens were pulled away from drugs or how many marriages were saved. Instead, it was about the seniors having a great trip going to watch the fall leaves change, the teen-agers going to a better summer camp than the church across town."

Huckabee's conception of what he should do as a Pastor was not wrong. What his congregation wanted and was focued on was wrong. Instead of praying for them and leading his people into the will of God he capitualted and became just like them.

"I hope we answer the alarm clock and take this nation back for Christ."

Huckabee can't do that by running for political office or talking politics on Fox News Channel.

If Huckabee really thinks that Jesus Christ is the answer to the woes of America and not government then why did he leave the ministry and pursue a job in politics orginially and now as a political commentator? It doesn't make any sense. Is God not important to him any more? He can never reach the lost for Christ being a Fox Political Commentator.

Mike Huckabee's priorities are out of wack. He needs to repent and return to serving God with all his heart and helping others to do the same.

  • Tue Mar 31, 2009 1:16 pm Agree: 3   Disagree: 1

I really struggle with those who feel they can determine God's specific calling on another believer's life and while he may be called of God to be a preacher that does not mean he can't be also called of God to what he is doing in the political arena as well, why can't he be called by God to both, plus by virtue of his political position I'm sure he has been offered numerous opportunities to fill pulpits throughout his state and in our nation. In my Association a majority of our Pastors are bi-vocational and serving God in both their workplace and in their church as well.

  • Tue Mar 31, 2009 12:13 pm Agree: 1   Disagree: 13

Huckabee's message is good but unfortunately it is not true in his own life as he has abandomned the call of God on his life (that is, to be a Pastor) to pursue the temporal and ultimately worthless endeavors of a politicain and political commentator.

He has thrown his life away pursuing that which has no eternal rewards either for himself or for others.

    Huckabee is a hypocrite.
