Episcopal Priest Defrocked After Refusing to Recant Muslim Faith

By Lillian Kwon|Christian Post Reporter

An Episcopal priest who claimed to be both Christian and Muslim was defrocked, effective Wednesday.

Bishop Geralyn Wolf of the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island deposed Ann Holmes Redding, citing abandonment of Communion of The Episcopal Church.

Although Wolf has described Redding as a "woman of utmost integrity," the bishop said she "believes that a priest of the Church cannot be both a Christian and a Muslim," according to a statement by the Rhode Island diocese.

In response to the charge, Redding claimed becoming a Muslim "is not an automatic abandonment of Christianity," according to the Seattle Times. "For many, it is. But it doesn't have to be."

An ordained minister in The Episcopal Church for over two decades, Redding made headlines in 2007 when she told the Seattle Times she was "100 percent" Muslim and Christian. Her story was first revealed in the Episcopal Diocese of Olympia's newspaper, the Episcopal Voice.

Three years ago, Redding attended an interfaith gathering where she said was moved by Muslim prayers. She said she felt an overwhelming conviction to surrender to God and soon after she became a practicing Muslim.

Convinced that her new Muslim faith did not contradict her beliefs as a Christ follower, Redding declared she was both a Muslim and a Christian.

"Both religions say there's only one God," Redding said, according to CNN, "and that God is the same God. It's very clear we are talking about the same God! So I haven't shifted my allegiance."

She also said she does not believe that God and Jesus are the same and believes Jesus is divine just as all humans are divine.

Dr. Emir Caner, a convert to Christianity from Islam and dean of The College at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, has called it "a logical impossibility for someone to be both a Muslim and Christian since they stand in direct opposition to each other on such crucial theological issues as the cross, resurrection, and salvation."

The Diocese of Rhode Island rejected Redding's claims and took swift action after she made her public profession of adhering to the Muslim faith.

Bishop Wolf issued a Pastoral Direction in July 2007, inhibiting her from all priestly duties while giving her the opportunity to reflect on the Christian faith and her beliefs.

Redding lives in Seattle but was ordained by a former bishop of Rhode Island. She thus remained subject to disciplinary authority under Wolf.

Redding was given until March 31, 2009, to resign or recant her Islamic ties.

She did neither.

Redding will continue practicing both faiths and told the Seattle Times that she is establishing a nonprofit institute to bring together the Abrahamic faiths – Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The institute is to be called Abrahamic Reunion West.

Honestly, the woman is deceived as spoken of in the New Testament and sought to deceive. She is an agent of the devil. She was dealt with properly.

Some Koranic things for Ms. Redding to consider:
    __________________________________
The Messiah, Jesus the son of Mary, was no more than God's apostle . . .God is but one God. GOD FORBID THAT HE SHOULD HAVE A SON! (4:171)

Those who say: The Lord of Mercy has begotten a son, preach a monstrous falsehood, at which the very heavens might crack . . (19:88)

God forbid that He Himself should beget a son! (19:29)

Praise be to God who has never begotten a son; who has no partner in His Kingdom . . . (17:111)

God has begotten a son. God forbid! Self-sufficient is He.! (10:68)

If the Lord of Mercy had a son, I would be the first to worship him. (43:72-81)

I don't doubt that there are some good precepts in Islam. It wouldn't have made it this far unless there were. But this is a blatant contradiction of the Word. How about exercising just a little discernment, Ms. Redding?

Episcopal Priests and other "so-called" belivers in Christ have already abandoned the faith by accepting sin of homosexuality and divorce as a vitrue in the God's Kingdom.

forsaltnlight » I guess I'm not sure what you are talking about.. I don't agree with the church having her as a minister tarnishing christianity with what she has said. I simply agreed with your response it is not right a christian and muslim does not make since.

Maybe I didn't paste it properly if so I apologize.

"She also said she does not believe that God and Jesus are the same and believes Jesus is divine just as all humans are divine. "

Well, sounds like she's not Muslim, either, since only Allah is divine in Islam. Perhaps M S Redding could write her own "holy" book?

    isn't that the truth!

bcoontz » Fri Apr 03, 2009 7:58 am : 0 : 0 Flag It should be noted that Vatican II stated a similar proposition as Ms. Redding

Wrong, to say vatican II statement is similiar could not be any more wrong...

They presented the belief (to sum it up quickly)that it is possible for a non-catholic to go to heaven and it is possible for there to be more then one way to be accepted into heaven.

The is the shortest and easiest way to put it but we can break down the words if needed to clarify....

It does not state you can be of Islam and Christianity.

It basically says God is great and can do whatever his will be and we cannot not change that fact.

So please read this documentation before you say what it means.

I think that happens for a few reasons:
    1. Many think that there is a such thing as "once saved, always saved."
    2. they think that giving "lip service" equals salvation and there is no inner change or lifestyle change.
    3. this is just another example of someone falling away from the faith because of false doctrine and conformity.

Just watching the news lets us know that God is on His way back very soon! This world is crazy, and when I read things like this I think about 2 Corinthians 4:4. The devil has blinded the minds of so many so they won't be exposed to the real truth!

Has there ever been a more confused denomination than TEC? Nothing surprises me that I hear about them. What I can't understand is why so many in that denomination stay since they clearly do not adhere to the Word of God?

It sounds like Ann Holmes Redding has some further soul searching to do.

It is not good for her to be in a leadership position if she's lost the understanding for what she represents.

Are anyone one of you surprised that he got defrocked???

I mean c'mon it is the Episcopal Church, the most relativistic Church on the planet. Anything goes there because there is no real Truth, ya know since Truth might offend someone who holds a different and frankly WRONG position.

I wonder when they will defrock the Bishop of Michigan in the Upper Penninsula who is also Buddhist? Now that might be two many defrockings for one year right?

Episcopalians are aliens to the Word of God!

Fyi: The President of the largest Episcopal Divinity School is a Lesbian women who recently said, "Abortion is a Blessing." So typical for them! Repent Episcopals!

Also keep in mind John 9: 39-41
Jesus said "I came into this world for judjment, so that those who do not see might see and those who do see might become blind".
The pharisees who were with him heard this and said to him "surely we are not also blind are we?" Jesus said to them "If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you are saying, "We see," so your sin remains"!

If you have read the scripture and you understand it by the will of God and the holy spirit that has been brought upon you and you turn your back on it then how are you different from the pharisees in this scripture?

I do not condemn anyone, that is for God to decide, but according to scripture, I believe she seems to be aligning herself in the same type of act as those pharisees described.

Deuteronomy 7:2-4 ( make no covenant with them)Read that chapter and while it may not relate directly to Islam (because it didn't exist back then) it tells you how God feels about making a covenant to another faith.

John 9: 38 The blind man said I do believe Lord and he worshiped Christ. - note Christ is God otherwise he would have asked the man not to worship him. (read the whole chapter to understand better if you have time but 38 will make this point)

Now see Revelation 22:8 It is I John who heard and saw these things, and when I saw them I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed them to me, "Don't! I am a fellow servant of yours and your brothers the prophets and of those who keep the message of this book, WORSHIP GOD!

If Christ was only a prophit (that is what Islam believes) then why would he allow a man to worship him as in John 9:38. He wouldn't have, he would of told the men to worhsip only God just as the angel professed in Revelations chpt 22: 8. But he didn't, now why didn't he is the good question. H

Ms. Redding is being decieved. Islam and Christanity are world's apart. There is no Salvation in Islam. Only those Christians, Follower's of Christ and the Cross will be awarded Salvation.

I'm thankful that someone in TEC gets it! I wish Ms. Redding all the best in her faith journey and admire the "scholarship" she has pursued thus far. However, that search is not something that should be done while wearing a collar. She either didn't pay attention in Seminary or didn't "get it" in the first place. I wish her all the best in her journey, but am thankful she will not continue that journey at the helm of a Christian congregation, celebrating Eucharist or performing her clerical responsibilities! Way to go Bp. Wolf!
