Neb. Lawmakers Advance Guns in Churches Bill

By Nathan Black|Christian Post Reporter

A Nebraska bill that would allow church security guards to carry concealed handguns advanced in the state legislature on Thursday.

The church provision was tacked on as an amendment to a measure that prohibits cities from having their own ban on concealed weapons.

State lawmakers voted 29-15 to adopt the amendment and 40-4 to advance the bill.

The amendment was introduced by Sen. Beau McCoy of Omaha whose decision was prompted by recent shootings and violence at other churches.

"A house of worship is a sacred place," McCoy said, according to Fremont Tribune. "And as such, it should be kept that way."

The Rev. Harry Buse, pastor of St. Leo Catholic Church in Omaha, said he didn't like the idea of arming security guards in houses of worship.

But he also commented, "I would like to think that we wouldn't need guns in church, though I realize times have changed," according to the Omaha World-Herald.

Sen. McCoy, who attends Westside Church in Omaha, is convinced that the amendment would enhance safety in churches. He pointed to the 2007 shooting at New Life Church in Colorado Springs that could have resulted in numerous deaths but ended when a church security guard shot the gunman.

Months after the shooting, New Life's senior pastor, the Rev. Brady Boyd, recommended that all churches have armed guards.

Opposing the amendment, Sen. Brenda Council called it "antithetical to the whole premise of a place of worship."

"If you believe in the power of prayer, you don't need someone in the church who's strapped" with a gun, Council said, according to Omaha World-Herald.

I can't wait to hear the moaning and laments after the first multiple death event in a Nebraska church. Guns have no place in a house of God and you can't rationalize gun toting in church with any excuses about self-defense.

The problem is that too many people have guns obtained without restriction, qualification or identification in states like Nebraska, so an arms war starts. They're armed, so I'll be armed and then violence ensues. Good luck folks. You're going to need it.

    rudi,

Amen. As a deacon at our church, security has been an issue that we have been discussing at every meeting. I agree with you. It seems that churches are easy targets. I do not agree with taking a life, but I also believe in defending innocent life.

wjneill said - "Better be packing heat because when rapture drives in, no 'tellin who you're gonna meet up with who might get in your way and needs to be immediately liquidated. Even in church. Kill commies for christ."

"...when the rapture drives in,..." what does that mean?

When the rapture happens, there will be no Christian with guns...I can assure you of that.

Hello, I read your article with great interest because of a church security ministry my wife and I started. Since we are both seasoned law enforcement officers and prior military members we take a special interest in how others around the country address the growing threat of church violence. A church can easily increase it's security by establishing a security team or safety team. A properly trained security team can blend in with all attendees and spring into action when the need arises. This team can address an active shooter or assist with a medical emergency. By no means am I advocating armed uniformed security guards in a church for I feel this tactic deters Christians from our Christian mission. However, with proper training and minimal expense a church security team, staffed by volunteers with a heart and desire to serve their church, can be an effective tool in identifying potential threats, recognizing vulnerabilities and minimizing loss of life during extreme situations. People focus on the extreme scenarios such as active shooters, but there are many aspects to church safety and security such as protecting children's ministries from sexual predators, protection of tithes, parking lot security, special events and the list goes on. What about reacting to a natural disaster or church fire? A designated mediator would not be helpful in evacuating the congregation but a security team will be better suited for handling this type of scenerio as well as an active shooter scenerio. The one thing I encourage all of your readers to be careful with is expecting the police to be able to respond in a timely manner to save the day. Even if it takes the police only minutes to arrive at the scene, in an extreme situation this minutes can result in great loss of life. We encourage you to Pray, Prepare and Protect. it really is a sad day when the church has to have armed people inside of it. I would not like to see this, but in this day and age we might have to. now, if you had people who really understood what power a christian has at his fingertips, things such as the recent church shootings could not happen. a christian who truly understands the power in the name of jesus, could stop anything from happening with just that word. people are so poorly taught and trained in churches today. we need such a revival in this nation!!
