Ex-Muslim Warns West of Plot to Impose Islamic Law

By Michelle A. Vu|Christian Post Reporter

Open, tolerant, and generous Western nations are being taking advantage of, warns a former Muslim from the Middle East who now lives in America.

Muslims in Arab countries as well as some born and bred in the West are aggressively pushing to impose Sharia law, or Islamic law, in countries such as Britain and the United States, among others, claims Nonie Darwish, who lived under Sharia law for 30 years in Egypt.

“To live under Islamic Sharia law is to live in the world’s largest maximum-security prison, and I for one don’t want to be incarcerated again,” writes Darwish in her new book, Cruel and Usual Punishment: The Terrifying Global Implications of Islamic Law.

For many Westerners, it is hard to believe that cruel punishments, extreme oppression of women’s rights, and unjust marriage customs as seen in Sharia can still exist in the 21st century.

But it does exist, Darwish says, and is applied in strict Muslim countries such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, Afghanistan, Libya, and Sudan. Some states in northern Nigeria also have Sharia courts, and recently the Northwest region of Pakistan was allowed to enact Sharia law to appease terrorists.

In the West, Canada allowed Sharia family arbitration from 1991 to 2006, and Great Britain allows it on a limited scale.

Women’s Rights (or lack thereof)

Under the Islamic legal system, women without a headdress on in public can be flogged, rape victims under certain circumstances can be punished, and adulteresses can be beheaded.

In her book, Darwish tells the story of a Saudi woman who was gang raped by seven men, but sentenced by the court to flogging because she was allegedly seen talking to a man who was not her relative. Her attackers said they saw that violation as justification to rape her and the judge agreed. Under Sharia law, women are not even allowed to make eye contact with men that are not their relatives.

Women are further at a disadvantage in courts because their testimony only counts as half the value of a man’s.

Sharia law is especially cruel when it comes to rape cases. To prove rape, either the rapist has to confess or there must be four male witnesses of the rape that testify on behalf of the victim.

Darwish, a former Muslim who became a Christian after coming to America, calls Sharia “the most inhumane, cruel and punitive system of laws practiced today.”

Marriage Laws

In her book, Darwish also writes extensively about the marriage contract in Muslim society. Under Islam, a man is allowed up to four wives. On the marriage contract, there are a number of lines under the heading of wife that a man can fill with several names.

But the author – who has appeared on CNN, MSNBC, Fox, Al-Arabiya, National Public Radio and Israeli TV – says the “most shocking sexual privilege Sharia grants to men is that they are allowed to seek sexual gratification with children.”

There is no legal age of marriage under Sharia and a girl can be given in marriage as young as the age of one. But marriage can only be lawfully consummated with a girl when she reaches the age of nine.

Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the Supreme Leader of Iran, the Shia Grand Ayatollah between 1979 and 1989, said in an official statement, which appears in his book, Tahrirolvasyleh:

“A man can quench his sexual lusts with a child as young as a baby. However, he should not penetrate. Sodomizing the baby is halal (allowed by Sharia). If the man penetrates and damages the child, then he should be responsible for her subsistence all her life. This girl, however, does not count as one of his four permanent wives…It is better for a girl to marry when her menstruation starts, and at her husband’s house rather than her father’s home. Any father marrying his daughter so young will have a permanent place in heaven.” Continue >>

    "Every time a Christian fights for privelege for "faith", that helps radical and violent Muslims get the same priveleges."

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The same thing is said about homosexuals and atheists.
    Just look at all the comments on this article. Christian jihadis and holy-warriors, all spoiling for a fight. All thinking that more religion, more faith, and more violence is the answer. Don't any of you people understand the consequences of what you are wishing for? Can't any of you figure out what the solution is?
    Every time a Christian fights for privelege for "faith", that helps radical and violent Muslims get the same priveleges. Every time a Christian wishes for more "God" in America, what they are doing is wishing for more theocracy, and facilitating more Muslim violence. Every time a Christian fights for faith-based schools, they are ensuring that Muslim immigrant children can be raised without any contact with American society.
    The "good old days" when the whole community was exactly the same religion are over people. Wake up to this reality! If you don't want others to tell you what to do, why do you think you have some right to dictate to them?
    American Christians who want to tear down the separation of church and state, and who think that "secularism" is a dirty word, be careful what you wish for. But wanting a Christian theocracy, you are enabling all the Muslim ones which do not hesitate to use violence.
    SHARIA LAW in the United States?? At one time it was thought of as unheard of, but now with the Muslim President - Barack Hussein Obama, who bows down to a Saudi Prince the way he was raised as a good Muslim - we may yet have a fight on our hands as these Islamic Jihadists try to impose their deviant ways on this Democratic Republic called the United States of America!!!!
    Islamic law in America? I'm not suprised. Britian has already bowed to the strong arm of Islam, it was only a matter of time before we do.
    It is on point of fact that because we in Christ have received mercy and grace that we uphold 'rights' ( as you so dismissively employ the term - tell that to the Gao Zhisheng, the Chinese Human Right Lawyer, who is suffering for having spoken out of "both sides of his mouth" as you would have it ) ):"righteousness (justice) and peace have embraced each other" Ps. 85:10
    Agreed: The Gospel is not the Social Gospel; but if the social gospel does not flow from The Gospel, then all our preaching is in vain, and we are speaking out of only one side of our mouth. Save the unborn babies AND the starving children. And stop sitting in judgment on those
    who are! Some of them may being going into the Kingdom of Heaven ahead, or, G-D forbid, instead of us!
    Groups like NOW aren't about rights. They are about power. The enemy of my enemy is my friend so why would they get involved.
    It's just like all those stars on the commercial about 25000 children dying each day of preventable things like hunger and what not but insist abortion is OK.
    Don't look for fair play from groups that don't play fair.
  • Sun Apr 05, 2009 8:25 am Agree: 1   Disagree: 0
    Do not confuse "human" rights with specialized "rights".
    Both the Sh'ma of Israel as well as our L-RD's affirmation of it in the Gospels expresses it as "love of neighbour as self". This includes women of every nationality and creed.It was Jesus Christ who elevated women on an unprecedented plane of equality - in Him. Gals.3:26-28.
    The Christian Church everywhere,with some few exceptions, not only missed "the human rights" boat, but actually turned it back (the S.S. St. Louis ),in the years leading up to and including the Holocaust. Pouring more "blood and treasure" into a Taliban-infested Afghanistan is the wrong war, and most definitely, on the wrong terrain.
    Consider carefully who is promoting this Western-based
    "jihad". Connect the dots.
    The silence is deafening!
    Contrary to popular belief,OUR GOD, can handle "islamic law".... the question is, are spoiled American Christians, true believers enough to stand up for the truth as proclaimed by our Lord and Savior in His word (or will they just continue to fight for "rights" according to man's ways???)
    Yes, it is spiritual. All the battles of the Bible were if you think about. However, people have used physical battles before under a spiritual influence. Why won't it work again. Why should it not be tried. Why not engage for the sake of not just defeating them but protecting and providing for us and our family.
    The recently resigned UK Bishop of Rochester, himself a Christian from Pakistan, has the correct optics on this our growing, global dilemma:
    namely,the moral vacuum that Western 'culture'has created is now ripe for the filling by a seemingly moral Islam. Military might will not defeat this foe; this is a spiritual battle that needs every piece of armament as set out in Ephesians 6 to be worn by believers and Churches alike.
