A mixed crowd of 400 students, alumni and pro-life supporters gathered in front of the campus' administration building after Palm Sunday Mass to rally against the speech.

The prayer rally was organized by Notre Dame Response, a coalition of student groups that formed in response to the university's decision to invite Obama as the commencement speaker and award him a honorary doctor of laws degree at the May 17 event. The White House formally accepted the invitation last month.

ND Response is demanding that the Indiana-based Catholic institution withdraw its offer of the honorary degree to the president because of his abortion policies, including his recent actions to allow federal funds for overseas abortions and embryonic stem cell research.

The group says the president's actions show contempt for Catholic teachings on the sanctity and dignity of all human life.

Despite a statement from the university president, the Rev. John Jenkins, saying the invitation does not mean that the school condones Obama's stances on abortion issues, the group is refusing to just sit back and take the decision quietly.

"We feel it's a betrayal of the Catholic identity that Notre Dame was founded on," John Daly, media coordinator of the coalition, told The Christian Post on Sunday.

One protester held a sign that posed the question: "Would you invite Pilate after he condemned Christ?" next to a picture of Obama. The banner also included scripture based on Matthew 25:4 reading, "Whatever you do to the least of my brethren, you do to me."

Daly, who graduated from the university last Spring, clarified that ND Response is not asking for the invitation to be rescinded, only the honorary degree.

"We feel it would be a great disrespect to the office of the president to ask for the White House to rescind an invitation they already accepted. However, the university has yet to give the honorary degree," he said.

Awarding a Notre Dame law degree to Obama who has used the law to deny equality to the unborn would diminish the value of the degree itself, says the coalition according to an earlier statement.

At the afternoon rally, ND Response chairman Chris Labadie likened Notre Dame's decision to invite Obama to deliver the commencement speech to welcoming an abortion "plague" to the university.

"Since 1973, a plague has ravished our country," Labadie said, according to The Associated Press. "It's not AIDS, Ebola, or the Black Death it's something far worse. It kills bodies and unborn souls. Now this plague has reached the gates of Notre Dame. It's been invited inside by those who shouldn't have let it."

Pro-life attorney Harold Cassidy, the event's keynote speaker, argued that abortion is a human rights violation against both the pregnant mother and the unborn child. He also made the argument that the pro-life movement is not just a phenomenon among the religious.

"Secular expressions about the sanctity of life, including the sanctity of life of the unborn child, are everywhere," Cassidy told the crowd.

The controversy over the Obama speech has drawn widespread attention.

The demonstration was supported by Cardinal Newman Society, an organization dedicated to renewing and strengthening Catholic identity at America's 224 Catholic colleges and universities, which on Sunday asked supporters through Twitter to offer a rosary in honor of the rally. Continue »

"but he is MY president. I believe he is misguided but I have not seen evidence that he is an evil person. He claims to be a Christian. In these troubled times I think we do the Country harm by actions targeted at discrediting the President. I pray for his success!"
Then you are praying for evil. Take the scales from your eyes...when one supports the killing of our helpless ones with no voice (like the black slaves of old) and, in addition, BO supports infanticide or in his words, "temporarilty alive people" - this is pure evil with no excuses.

Whether we agree with the president or not, we should respect the position and pray for the person. I do not agree with his position on abortion (amoungst other things), I did not vote for him, but he is MY president. I believe he is misguided but I have not seen evidence that he is an evil person. He claims to be a Christian. In these troubled times I think we do the Country harm by actions targeted at discrediting the President. I pray for his success!

IRC-SoCal » they also protested the speech made my President Bush in 2001 over his support of the death penalty.

Good point IRC, I am Catholic and I do not support the death penalty or abortion. Taking anothers life is wrong and is the Job of the Lord to decide. Just to let you know I did take a stance against support for the death penalty by Bush, and will against any other who supports it. Many others that I know who share their political opinions hold the same stance. The problem is us as christians regardless if you are catholic or not, have to work together to convince all to take action or we will loose the battles again and again. No ONE organization is enough to defeat these types of evil alone. All christians must dismiss there prides, and support one another in following what GOD has asked. Stop bickering about the small stuff and come together to keep this country CHRISTIAN and under the influence of GOD!

pcweeteddy » Hey if a whole religion was blamed for one mans actions then all christianity is doomed because every religion out there has it's followers who often stray away from the path of truth. Think of what you are saying..

I am catholic and surely don't believe Obama has any right to speak at ND, neither do any of the people at my Catholic church that I know of and trust me the subject is out and all are talking about it. READ THE NEWS and you'll find many Bishops have alread spoke out against this and even the Pope. So the Catholic organization is not for it and they are telling the head of that facility to either revoke the invitation or change the name of the University and lose its catholic roots....

    Eziekel 3:17-19
17 "Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me. 18 When I say to a wicked man, 'You will surely die,' and you do not warn him or speak out to dissuade him from his evil ways in order to save his life, that wicked man will die for his sin, and I will hold you accountable for his blood. 19 But if you do warn the wicked man and he does not turn from his wickedness or from his evil ways, he will die for his sin; but you will have saved yourself.

The church has man a rightful stance and supports revoking the invitation (that was made by one man) to President Obama. Fellow Catholics including students are rallying against this.

So before you make accusations about any denomination be sure its not one mans agenda. The church is not behind this action.

God Bless and please pray for my church, your church and every christian out there that we may do what is good, righteous and pleasing to God. AMEN!

Greetings to readers of this web site. I have a contrarian view I hope you will consider. Students, alumni, faculty and fans of Notre Dame are well within their basic rights to protest the appearance of President Obama if they do not share his opinions regarding abortion and stem cell research. But I must respectfully ask if they also protested the speech made my President Bush in 2001 over his support of the death penalty, or if they had moral misgivings about his support for tax cuts for the very wealthiest among us, or his prosecution of an unjust war, to mention just a few of his questinable policies viv-a-vis the words of Jesus. If you are consistent in your adherence to the teachings of Christ, then all of these issues are troublesome, not just the ones that the Republican Party tells you to pay attention to. I saw a quote today in the NYT article regarding this topic from a ND professor who said, basically, the protesters are really only disgruntled Republicans who voted against Obama and are currently playing out their grudge. If this is the case, then the hubbub in South Bend is nothing more than the intellectual dishonesty rampant in our current political culture. Peace and love to all of you.

Greetings in Jesus Name, the Name above all names!

I was recently informed that tradition will be upheld and Notre Dame and will be inviting Barak Obama to Notre Dame. What kind of speech will he be able to give to your organization that you will be able to say Amen to? His ungodly opinion on abortion which is murder and infanticide is totally against what the Catholic Church has stood on for decades. There will always be disagreements until Jesus returns but when a person is so blatant and rebellious against the Law of God, that goes further than just an opinion. This is a total black and white situation. The Catholic Church has been totally against abortion and Barak Obama totally against life. How do you justify the invitation of this man to your organization when you have nothing in common with him? Do we say because he is the man in office that we should honor him even though he is rebellious against God? This is hypocrisy to the limit. Do not think that your organization will not be judged for this action. The bible says; do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? ( 2 Corinthians 6:14). When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. (Proverbs 29:2). Why would you entertain an ungodly person that is bringing hurt to the United States of America by ignoring the Law of God in his total rebellion? Does your organization believe in God or not? Do you prefer to uphold your tradition rather then standing on your principles? Barak Obama is a very gifted man but this does not impress God. God gave him these giftings to be used for the good and to glorify God. As Christians we should not be impressed with men and women of charisma but with those who Love God and will stand for what is right.

I pray that God will make some good out of this situation.
God is pro-life, so should we be!

How can you honor someone who supports the killing of a baby human with a beating heart? Saddam Husein had nothing on Obama compared to the genocide Obama is unleashing.
