Poll: Most Americans Still Christian; Half See Religion as Solution

By Audrey Barrick|Christian Post Reporter

A new Newsweek poll reveals that although most Americans are still holding on to their faith and describing themselves as Christians, fewer believe religion can answer today's problems.

According to the poll of 1,003 adults, released Tuesday, 60 percent of American adults say religion is very important in their lives and 78 percent say prayer is an important part of their daily lives.

However, less than half (48 percent) believe religion can answer all or most of today's problems. The percentage is the lowest number Newsweek has recorded since it began polling Americans on that issue in 1957 (when 82 percent believed religion could answer the problems of that time).

Also, 68 percent of Americans think religion is losing influence on American life, up from 62 percent in 2007 and 46 percent in 2005. And 81 percent say that's a "bad thing."

Since President Barack Obama stepped into the White House, more Americans (31 percent) believe organized religion has too little influence on American politics compared to the year before (25 percent) when George W. Bush was in office.

Moreover, 40 percent think the influence of seculars or those who don't follow any religion has increased on American politics.

A majority of Americans still consider the United States a Christian nation, with 62 percent agreeing. In 2008, 69 percent agreed. The percentage of those who don't consider the country Christian increased from 26 percent in 2008 to 32 percent today.

President Obama, in his recent visit to Turkey, declared that the United States isn't a Christian nation despite the large Christian population.

"We do not consider ourselves a Christian nation, or a Jewish nation or a Muslim nation," Obama said. "We consider ourselves a nation of citizens who are bound by ideals and a set of values."

The poll also reveals changing attitudes, particularly toward homosexuality. Down from 84 percent in 2002, 74 percent today say they have old-fashioned values about family and marriage. And 25 percent, down from 36 percent in 2002, say school boards ought to have the right to fire teachers who are known homosexuals.

Meanwhile, Americans have not shifted on their belief in God, with 85 percent of Americans say they never doubt the existence of God.

Other findings in the April 1-2 Newsweek poll show that 48 percent consider themselves religious and spiritual while 30 percent describe themselves as only spiritual; 29 percent say they are evangelical Protestant, down from 35 percent in 2007; and 6 percent describe themselves as non-Christian.

Religion COULD be a part of the solution, but it first has to start being a part of the PROBLEM. Could meaning the faithful adhering to all the tenants of their faiths, NOT choosing those that benefit themselves only or allow them to oppress others. This applies to Christians, Jews, Muslim, and any faith. I generally us the catch all term moral ambiguity, that applies to all faiths, as well as the atheist's. We are all guilty to some degree.

ch, let me be more specific are our works the evidence of one's salvation or required for one's salvation?

"Religion in the Bible is never a good thing! "

So, you noticed that when God's people went religious that bad things happened! You would think that with thousands of years of written history in the Bible to prove that we would have learned our lesson about being religious....

I'm saying that faith without the works to justify that faith is not true faith, hence you are not saved. You can talk about faith and Jesus all yo uwant, but actions speak louder than words as we all know. Good works are the evidence that you have faith and are living your life according to the teachings of Christ. If you truly follow the Lord, good works will come naturally because you've internalized Christ's message. James told us that faith without works is a dead faith and Paul echoed those same sentiments. It's common sense, really.

ch, so are you saying that works along with faith save us or works are the evidence that we are saved through putting our complete faith/trust in the person and finished work of Christ alone?

  • Thu Apr 09, 2009 12:51 pm Agree: 1   Disagree: 0

While it's true that only God can provide salvation that doesn't mean there's nothing we can do or should do. We can fall out of favor with God through sin. Our salvation isn't guaranteed by saying at one point in our lives that we accept Jesus. Our actions have to support that acceptance. We have to live as Jesus taught and we have to avoid sin, otherwise, our acceptance means nothing.

If we haven't fufilled His commandment to love God and our neighbor as ourselves, if we haven't shown love and charity in our daily dealings then our words are merely words. Faith is a living thing, expressed through what we do as Christians. We don't truly have Faith, unless we live it, not just through prayer, but through our actions. Our deeds validate our words and the Bible tells us time and again that we will be judged by our deeds.

We have to avoid the trap that thinking we are saved means we are. That we aren't obligated to do good deeds, Christian works of love and charity is a mistaken notion. Our deeds alone cannot save us, but nor can faith that isn't expressed through deeds. Without the outward expression of our faith through action, our faith is false. If our deeds are sinful, our faith is false as well. In both cases we are not justifying our faith by living it and are not guaranteed salvation. I can say I'm an airline pilot, but unless I fly, I'm not actually a pilot. I can say I'm a Christian, but unless I follow Christ's commandments to tend to the sick and poor, to love my neighbor as myslef for the love of God, I'm not actually a Christian.

Religion won't do squat for our country. We've already got enough religion. Christianity in it's true form will transform our country like we never thought it would.

Majority of the people are confused with the topic.
Indeed, there are many religions and they kill each
other in the name of religion. The religions have
caused more bloodshed and death in human history.

Religion will not solve human misery and problems,
BUT WE MUST LOOK TO JESUS CHRIST AND FOLLOW HIS PATH,
then the problems can be solved. Even the religion
"Christianity" has turned like a religious business without the compassion of Christ. I must admit that
there are a lot of true followers of Christ in
Christianity: they are the salt of the earth.

Truth be told, religion comes from the Latin word religare, which means to bind the creature back with His creator. Therefore, religion IS the answer. Those who associate the word with works-based righteousness not only misunderstand the word, but the beliefs of many Christians as well.

    Cowboy,

Back up the truck. This issue does need some attitude. Your assumption about how I read Scriptures is unfair because you never asked me what I thought. You made a hasty generalization. Come on.

So what you meant was, "Hey Mike! Read the Bible this way?" That still sounds pretty trite. The issue remains. I think Mike is concerned about religiosity and triteness. Mike is not the issue. You aren't the issue. I am not the issue nor is the issue about how we read Scripture.

Why don't you just answer Mike's concerns instead of giving us mini-lectures on how to read the Bible and making logical leaps. Respectfully submitted.

  • Wed Apr 08, 2009 3:54 pm Agree: 1   Disagree: 1

No, whatever your name is, I didn't mean "read your Bible". You can "read your Bible" but if you don't know HOW to read it you end up with religion. I would assume you think you can just open it and read a verse and do it and God will be pleased with you? Are you eating unclean animals as it says not to in the Old Testament or are you repenting and being baptized like Peter said for remission of sin. Or are you trusing in the death, burial and resurrection like Paul teaches. Jesus said for eternal life you need to keep the commandments. Is that what we are to do today for eternal life? That's rightly dividing the word of truth. Dividing truth from truth. All the Bible is truth. It's all written TO us but not all FOR us. You are dividing truth from truth. You can stop with the attitude.

  • Wed Apr 08, 2009 2:49 pm Agree: 2   Disagree: 2

We've made religion the solution. Nothing like a religious statement to set things straight Cowboy ("Get into the word rightly divided"). What the heck does that mean? I think you meant to say, "Hey, Mike! Read your Bible!"

Mike was illustrating religious triteness and that's how you responded. What a genius.

  • Wed Apr 08, 2009 2:29 pm Agree: 5   Disagree: 3

Mike, I don't think you meant your post as a good thing, that IS what religion teaches but religion is not of God. Religion is man trying to please God through good works. Israel had the law but that did not gain them salvation. It was to show them that they needed a savior but instead they used the law to show their righteousness. We as believers in the death, burial and resurrection which is our gospel today now know that what Jesus did for us gains us righteousness, not a list of rules and regulations. People today ignorant of scripture would try to put us under a law system that even God's chose people couldn't do. Stop trying to earn your own righteousness and receive Christ's. His righteousness is the only one with any power to change hearts. He doesn't change you but He makes you a new creature. Your circumstances may change and they may not but once you have Christ in you, then you have the hope of glory. You have that peace and that joy that doesn't come from circumstances that change but you have the spirit of God. You are sealed until the day of redemption. Get into the word rightly divided!

how can 'religion' be the answer to today's problems? all you hear is nothing but sin. your problems are pointed & associated to sin. here are a couple of 'answers' to today's problems

if money is your problem - give your 10% & you will be rich
if self confidence is your problem - deny yourself & you will be blessed
if you need to find a job - do not rely on your own strength
if you are sick (diabetes, cancer)- don't go to the doctor, pray about it.
if you are looking for a husband / wife or RELATIONSHIP - you are lusting or the reason why you go to church is because of another person not god.

that is how 'religion' solves your problem, it creates more.

and if all of these things fail, the solution is YE LACK FAITH, you have a sin, you failed to do this or that.

and look at what happened during the middle ages, thousands died bec. religion was the solution.
