Some Christians Applaud Obama's Push for Immigration Reform

By Ethan Cole|Christian Post Reporter

A diverse group of Christian leaders and organizations voiced support for plans by the Obama administration to address immigration reform this year, a move that has riled opponents who argue that he should first focus on fixing the economy.

"Christians throughout the United States are energized and encouraged by the courageous steps taken by the Obama administration to prioritize reform of our broken immigration laws," said Christians for Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CCIR) in a statement released on Thursday.

"Today's statements from the administration indicate that Obama will make good on his campaign promise by committing to reform within the first year of his term," said the coalition, which consists of diverse Christian organizations, churches, and leaders united in support of comprehensive U.S. immigration reform.

Christian leaders who are part of CCIR include Jim Wallis, founder and president of Sojourners; the Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, president of National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, America's largest Hispanic evangelical organization; and the Rev. Derrick Harkins, pastor of Nineteenth Street Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. and World Relief board member, among others.

Senior White House staffs this week informed select reporters that the administration plans to address immigration reform as early as May. According to CNN, President Obama plans to listen to the advice of a bipartisan and diverse group of experts to form new legislations.

But a White House official said that immigration reform will not be given higher priority than other key issues like health care and energy, and there is no promise for a vote this year on new immigration laws.

The Obama administration wants to find a way for the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States to be legal, while increasing border security, removing incentives to enter the United States illegally, and working with Mexico to reduce illegal immigration, CNN reported.

Critics of Obama's plan argue that the current economic crisis has put millions of Americans out of jobs and there is no room right now for efforts that help illegal immigrant workers.

"It just doesn't seem rational that any political leader would say, let's give millions of foreign workers permanent access to U.S. jobs when we have millions of Americans looking for jobs," said Roy Beck, executive director of NumbersUSA, a group that supports reduced immigration, to the New York Times.

"It's going to be, ‘You're letting them keep that job, when I could have that job,'" he said.

But Christians for Comprehensive Immigration Reform supports President Obama and said it is committed to "fostering civil dialogue" about immigration in members' congregations and communities.

"We will continue to build momentum and support across the faith community for effective political solutions on immigration that restore the rule of law while also upholding moral and theological principles that call us to show compassion and mercy toward our undocumented brothers and sisters," the coalition vowed.

CCIR has helped organize more than 100 prayer vigils across the country in support of immigration reform in February, and is preparing to meet with members of Congress during April to push for a new U.S. immigration system.

As long as American small business keeps hiring illegals as cheap labor, they will keep coming over the border. Close off the money tap and it removes incentive to sneak into the US. No jobs, no reason to come here. The government has been unwilling to make American business obey the law, either and people center on the immigrants, ignoring those who provide the jobs.

We need better border security, but we need more inspectors to hold employers accountable for hiring illegals. Make the documentation laws more stringent and enforce them. If the government raids a plant full of illegals, they should deport them and throw the employers in jail as well. They're a big factor in this immigration problem, but you never hear about clamping down on them. Well, it's about time we did.

New Report Exposes Rampant Tax Fraud By Illegal Aliens

A new report just released documents rampant abuse in the collection of fraudulent income tax refunds from the IRS, especially by illegal immigrants.

The 51-page report, The Earned Income Tax Credit and Illegal Immigration: A Study in Fraud, Abuse, and Liberal Activism, by financial analyst and vdare.com contributor Edwin Rubenstein can be found in it's entirety here: http://www.thesocialcontract.com/docs/tsc_earned_income_tax_credit_2009apr09.pdf

Following the law, abiding by the law and supporting the law is "work" that illegal aliens just won't do. Two different groups have emerged in America today due to the effect of illegal immigration, those who have to obey the law (citizens) and those who don't (illegal aliens).

Legalizing an illegal alien's presence in America by rewarding their illegal behavior through amnesty is not the way to build a good system of law and order. It only invites more criminal activity and more avoidance of our laws.

We tried 'comprehensive immigration reform' in 1986. We gave amnesty to 3 million illegal aliens in exchange for the government promising to secure the borders, conduct workplace enforcement and enforce immigration law. It didn't work because the government lied and did nothing other than process the amnesty paperwork. Due to that folly, we now have 20 Million or more illegal aliens here demanding amnesty.

Don't you think it is far beyond time that we engage in Comprehensive Immigration ENFORCEMENT rather than Comprehensive Immigration Reform?

Maricopa County, Arizona is the best area in the country for reliable illegal alien crime statistics. The county sheriff, Joe Arpaio, has aggressively decided to combat illegal alien crime in his county. He has partnered with federal ICE through the 287 (g) program which trains local law enforcement personnel in determining and dealing with illegal aliens. He has a well staffed Triple I Unit (Illegal Immigrant Interdiction Unit).

The MCAO report, released October 2008, from County Attorney Andrew Thomas features these startling numbers for prosecuted felony cases in Maricopa County, Arizona:

In 2007, illegal immigrants accounted for:

    10% of sex crimes convictions
    11% of murders convictions
    13% of stolen cars convictions
    13% of aggravated assaults convictions
17% of those sentenced for violent crimes
19% of those sentenced for property crimes
20% of those sentenced for felony DUI.
21% of crimes committed with weapons
34% of those sentenced for the manufacture, sale or transport of drugs
36% of those sentenced for kidnapping
    44% of forgeries
50% of those sentenced for crimes related to "chop shops"
    85% of false ID convictions
    96% of smuggling convictions

Illegal immigrants make up 19 percent of those convicted of crimes in Maricopa County and 21 percent of those in county jails.

Illegal immigrants only make up an estimated 9 percent of the countyâ

Obama is intent on getting his nationalized health care and globalwarming/cap and trade/energy reform legislation passed this year (which, if passed, will cost each American family between $700-$1400 in additional energy costs annually). He's also every bit as committed to getting citizenship for illegal immigrants but realizes it will further splinter and already fractured public, so its likely he will engage in a propaganda campaign, utilizing the pro-illegal mouthpiece organizations (taxpayer supported, no less) like LaRaza to try to shape the debate this year. He plans on using momentum from successfully passing more of his agenda to power through 'Comprehensive Immigration Reform" (Amnesty), likely to take place during the last quarter of 2009 or even early next year.)

We've got a de facto amnesty going on now with no interior enforcement, including no enforcement against the employers illegally hiring the illegals. Team Obama has forbidden workplace raids and instead is raiding sheriffs engaged in the 287(g) illegal alien removal program, like Sheriff Arpaio of Maricopa County-AZ, who are actually enforcing the law. It's nuts.

Granting amnesty is a massive bailout for illegal immigration, pillages the American taxpayer, floods our country with even more third-worlders because of the effect of chain migration once illegals are legalized and encourages more invasion of our country.

I wonder if his tune would change if he is the sole provider for his family of four (not sure if he is or not, but hopefully he can understand) and he loses his job and can't find another one because all the illegals in our country taking all our jobs. I wonder if he would say "Oh. That's ok. I don't mind, really."

"What happened to loving your neighbor as yourself, doing unto others."

Does "loving your neighbor" include allowing illegal aliens break our laws?

I live in a border state, 50 miles north of Mexico. I just can't wait to see the hordes fleeing from Mexico into our state with the promise of "amnesty". Until something can be done to strengthen our borders we are asking to be overrun with criminals if we don't stop the influx of aliens coming over first. We certainly don't need to entice them with promises of amnesty for breaking our laws as our border enforcement is lax....and then once given amnesty, signing them up for taxpayer supported Welfare.

I'm sorry if this sounds like a lack of charity on my part, but I doubt I will be offered a "love thy neighbor" attitude by the rush of illegals trespassing and looting my property and breaking American Laws in their quest to go North to your fine state.

In this melting economy and our lawmakers complete resistance to the US publics policies. American patriots must do the right thing and stop this violation of Federal law. No doubt it will be very difficult because the administration in power, is run by Left wing Democrats. Sen. David Vitter, Republican-LA has drafted S95, a law if enacted, could kill all funding to any city that is infamously branded a "Sanctuary City." With indifference to American populations outcry any city that entertains as a refuge to illegal immigrants. They will have to search the deep pockets of their business co-conspirators, to insure costs for services. We all know the 50 Senators including Harry Reid, and Madam Pelosi who secretly suppressed e-verify, so that more than 300.000 illegal labor, could compete for jobs with American Workers. Reid of Nevada, as Mrs. Pelosi of California aware that their states were inundated with illegal aliens, so they had to do something? Likely the reason they made funding for E-Verify funding disappear?

What are any of these idiots thinking, when their are 10 million jobless Americans right now in these United States? They must be undead zombies not to realize without any logic, that we can't afford to subsidize as estimated by the Heritage Foundation 40 million illegal aliens? Perhaps professional people in limited numbers with absolute skills in the scientific fields. But certainly not uneducated, indigent labor who competes with legal low skilled whites, blacks or any other color, creed or religion? We all must be bloody fools not to recognize, that California nearly went into a $47 billion dollar crash. Because of the payout to the illegal poor who have figured out the way to short change Americans of their pay checks.

A great example of the avenue illegal aliens have fraudulently, exploited free money is the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). In his book financial analyst and economist Edwin Rubinstein. He states that (EITC) is the largest anti-poverty program in the United States -- and the most illegal-immigrant friendly. In 2007, more than 23 million households received more than $47 billion in the EITC payments. Much of the so-called "tax relief" goes to people who never paid a cent in taxes, and may have already defrauded the government of huge sums each year. EITC has become yet another means of depriving hard-working Americans of their own resources. It robs some to give to others. he EITC is the most accessible of the major entitlement programs and used by more people than food stamps and welfare (TANF)* combined he admits.

Also know America settles more new legal immigrants, than any place on Mother Earth. Over 1.5 million immigrants were nationalized last year.

Should this law get the backing of millions of Americans, we have the tremendous influence to sever most welfare benefits and government handouts, to anybody who steals into a sovereign country without being processed. In states like California where in just Los Angeles county alone, an estimated 4 million illegal nationals have settled there. The clogged schools have become a breeding ground for violence, because non-English comprehension is prevalent there. Even the main school office English is spoken as a second language. The peopleâ

Immigration is not just about illegal workers. My wife and I have struggled with the immigration department for six years to get her daughter here. She can't even come on a visa for a visit (she graduated third in her class so we are talking about a great kid). The whole process is as mean and corrupt as anything the government can dish out. We will fill out a form in the endless series of steps and then they will tell us we made a mistake. When we finally get them on the phone, they admit the mistake was theirs, they weren't looking closely, etc. In the meantime, another month has gone by. These people are incompetent! So, yes, reform of this organization is badly needed. Someone who doesn't think like an attorney or who doesn't act xenophobic should be in charge.

I am a christian, conservative and feel all illegals need to be sent home. It IS BIBLICAL. It is mostly the liberal churches, catholic church and minority churches. I see nothign in the article abut conservative churches in the poll. Paul said to obey the laws of your land. He said to be in submission to your masters even if they are harsh. He even told the slave to return to his master but would be an advocate for him, but whatever the master decided. God set up our government and we have laws. The law coming here legally is not harsh, especially when compared to how harsh masters were. God demands we obey our laws. It is not against God's laws to reguire people to enter a country legally. I would like the liberal and catholic churches to pony of the dough to pay for ALL their expenses so the taxpayers do not have to. Until they start putting their money where their mouth is I will not listen to them.

Of course they're happy. Mexican immigrants are overwhelmingly Catholic and conservative on social issues. It makes perfect sense that Christian groups would support an attempt to garner 20 million (12 is a very underestimated number) anti-gay, anti-choice votes. Nevermind the fact that California is broke because of the massive negative drain on social services brought about by so many people that don't contribute. And no, sales tax doesn't really count for anything. The studies show (independent, not partisan) that they take in social services over 3 times more than what they contribute.
