Protestant Pastors Evenly Split on Global Warming Beliefs

By Audrey Barrick|Christian Post Reporter

Protestant pastors are split on global warming and whether it is real and man-made, a new survey shows.

LifeWay Research found that 47 percent of Protestants pastors agree with the statement "I believe global warming is real and man-made" while 47 percent do not.

Among pastors in churches affiliated with mainline denominations, 75 percent agree. Notably, fewer (67 percent) pastors who consider themselves mainline say global warming is real and man-made.

Meanwhile, only 32 percent of pastors in evangelical denominations and 41 percent of those who consider themselves evangelical agree with the statement, according to the survey of 1,002 pastors conducted in October 2008.

"Not all pastors who consider themselves mainline serve in churches in denominations that are traditionally considered mainline," said Scott McConnell, associate director of LifeWay Research. "Similarly, not all pastors who consider themselves evangelical serve in denominations that are traditionally considered evangelical. Yet these denominational roots provide a strong indication of what a church’s pastor believes about global warming."

More specifically, 93 percent of pastors who consider their political ideology liberal or very liberal say global warming is real and man-made compared to 53 percent of those who identify themselves as conservative or very conservative politically.

More Christians have jumped on the climate change bandwagon as they view global warming as a major crisis, but some believe the warnings are exaggerated.

Last year, a group of conservative Christians launched a "We Get It!" campaign that asks Christians to examine the hard evidence and not let their environmental stewardship be based on mere emotions or media hype.

The campaign calls for genuine biblical stewardship and defending the poor, whose needs and even lives are often sacrificed for a cap on CO2 emissions, among other global warming policies.

"As Bible-believing Christians, we must understand that we don’t have to choose between caring for people or nature – that in God’s wise design, lifting people out of poverty, and helping them fulfill their God-given potential as producers and stewards not only assists the poor, but is the best thing we can do for the environment as well," the campaign states. "We must foresee the devastating impacts that skyrocketing costs for food, energy, and other essential needs will have on the poor, and how they can lock millions of our neighbors in the developing world into generations of grinding poverty, disease, and early death."

Campaign supporters, including Tony Perkins of Family Research Council, Dr. James Dobson of Focus on the Family, and award-winning radio host Janet Parshall, say it isn't about whether they care about the environment but how they care.

In other survey findings, LifeWay Research found that 52 percent of Protestant pastors address environmental issues once a year or less and 25 percent say they address it several times a year. Pastors who consider themselves mainline (53 percent) are more likely to speak on the environment throughout the year than pastors who identify as evangelical (32 percent).

"Protestant pastors are split on the issue of man-made global warming and their views impact their communication," said Ed Stetzer, director of LifeWay Research. "Mainline clergy answer the question with similar numbers to self-identified Democrats and liberals in surveys of the general public. Evangelical clergy answer the question in similar percents to Republicans and conservatives. At the end of the day, Protestant pastors are as divided as Americans are on the issue of global warming."

I would suggest that we look at historical weather data rather than asking pastors about whether the temperature of the world is going up or down. Pastors don't know everything!

When the meteorologists in Denver can ACCURATELY predict a local forecast, I might then give more credence (above the stewardship idea) to the whole Global Warming thing. Until then, if the fundamental science is bad, how can the advanced, more in depth science be any good?

I enjoyed this informative book on the science of climate change which outlines a great number of study parameters actively being engaged:

    One question:

Where in Scriture is a Pastor (or Elder) commanded to campaign to fix the environment??? Not sure I have ever seen that one.

(I'm sure someone will mention "stewardship" but that is not specific to pastors)

Christians who hold to the idea of global warming, outside of normal, cyclical activities of the sun, are simply ignoring the Bible they claim to believe. In
Gen 8:22, it says: "While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease." So the idea of global warming destroying the polar ice caps, flooding the ocean, and making perpetual summer, is foolish.
ow, the REAL global warming will occur later, as Peter says, "Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?" 2Pe 3:12. Now, THAT'S a Big Bang!

Could you tell all Pastors that every Planet in Solar System is heating up, not just Planet Earth. So Global Warming is NOT being caused by Human Beings but by SUN. It is part of our LORDS Plan for End Times. "Even Green Grass will burn".

I happen to purchase my home in the midst of a group of scientific families, one of whom was an atmospheric scientist with a doctorate in Meteorology long before the science became the religion it has become today. He was the guy that used to measure and record effects of our old atmospheric bomb blasts. Back then, near the beginning of the cold war, everything was classified, and the classified materials did not carry so much politically correct overtones. They just reported the facts as they observed them.

Now of course all that has changed as the science has evolved into a religion. He highest rewards and accolades seem to be given to those who have been documented (well documented) to offer the biggest lies for political effect.

Reading reviews such as the Monthly Carbon Dioxide Report at SPPI, which you can sign up to have emailed to you free of charge is an excellent way to filter out real world scientific observations from politically correct mantra. The direct link to download the monthly report free is:

Also reading Global Warming skeptic's reports are a very good source in some cases, rising to the level of peer reviews.

One of the most complete sources for the skeptic seems to be Science & Public Policy Institute (SPPI). They offer comment and reviews and original resource materials on nearly every major Global Warming body of scientific inquiry. Their website is: http://scienceandpublicpolicy.org/

NPR (gasp!) had an amazing debate on Global Warming where the strongest arguments made were against "Cap and Trade" which logically, and almost faultlessly lead one to see and understand the link between "Cap and Trade" and unintended consequences that will logically follow. A 50 minute download of the NPR (gasp!) debate can be heard at this website: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=9082151

Even the scientists who support Global Warming say it is because they get research stipends (if they support this myth) Just another way for this administration to get your money (among thousands of ways). People will say anything if their livelihood depends on it. I love Al Gore, stupendneous errectousibus maximum, as he stands in a snowstorm bemoaning our demise. God did not create an imperfect world where He would need dumb man to correct his supposed mistakes. I once had the privilege of throwing "He betrayed this country" Gore out of my meeting. (Best feeling in the world since he was VP then)
His energy bill for his house is over $ 30,000 a month and he flies his jet everywhere. Get real people. Democrats know that the United States has a corporate IQ of 79.

Scientific objectivity on Global Warming and related climate change issues requires that each of us read not only the original research and conclusions (if any) but also read the peer reviewing of the original research and read the minority reviews by those who discent. Most of us only read views papers of those that represent our own political bias, or believe the mantra's on the subject that do not stress our comfort zones. We prefer to sit smuggly and judgementally in our comfortable self-assured seats knowing we hold the truth on climate change. We practice our religion the same way.

LOL, Steve. Al Gore and the other alarmists used the term "global warming" until science starting showing things are actually not warming significantly. Then the alarmists started using "climate change," because this way no matter WHAT happens they can claim it's proof that the world's going to heck in a handbasket. Sad, but hilarious.

Climate change has been occurring all my life. It's called spring, summer, autumn and winter.

For a very detailed website on climate change, go to junkscience.com. For a good website that's not real technical, go to heartland.org.
There is much hype but very little "facts" in the media about climate change.

Climate change is the correct title for those who are informed on the issue. Global warming is used by those who do not (maybe through no fault of their own) know a great deal about the subject.

Sorry, but their is a fair share of propaganda where global warming is concerned. (Or is it now coined climate change.)

those pastors who does not believe global warming is man made are GOP supporters. they think that the world should revolve around them. they are not used to being corrected bec. of selfish agenda.
