Don't Let Idols Take the Place of God in Your Life

By Billy Graham|Christian Post Guest Columnist

Q: Our pastor preached about idols the other day, and he said that an idol can be anything - our money, our job, or anything like that. I guess I always thought idols were just carved religious figures. Was he right to label all these things as idols? - Mrs. C.H.

A: An idol is any object that people worship - so yes, he was right to label things like that as modern idols. Some people today worship their money or social position or possessions just as devoutly as people in the ancient world worshipped an image made of gold or wood or stone.

The difference, of course, is that most people don't think of money (for example) as an idol, or as something they worship. In reality, however, many people do; their whole lives are focused on money, and they serve it just as faithfully as other people serve an actual idol. In fact, money has become their master, and they have become its servants. In other words, money has taken the place of God in their lives. Jesus warned, "No one can serve two masters. ... You cannot serve both God and Money" (Matthew 6:24).

The Bible gives us two important warnings about idols (whatever form they take). First, it warns us that they are false; only God can meet our deepest moral and spiritual needs. Second, it warns us that nothing should take God's place in our lives. The Bible says, "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything" (Exodus 20:4).

Are there any idols in your life - things that you have allowed to take God's rightful place? Face them ... repent of them ... and then make Christ alone the center of your life.

    part 2

the book of malachi - give your 10% & you will be rich, blessed etc etc.
that is why pastors / televangelist think that life is fracking easy & simple - they do not deal with politics at work, job loss, job interview, irate customers & live paycheck to pay check.
and then they will use another verse like 'ye lack faith' or 'you do not have faith' when the book of malachi does not work.
that is the good news - 'you failed to do this' 'you failed to do that ' ye lack faith, that is not biblical and IT IS ALL YOUR FAULT!

do you deal with the issues of life mr graham? pastors / televangelist do not worry about money they just use malachi & poof. and they DO worship 2 masters because if they worship only god, then they will not be living in multi million $$ homes & driving luxury cars with leather seats & sometimes private jets.

they practice the golden rule: he who has the gold makes the rules. that is biblical - proverbs says that.

ch, while there may be saints, which is what all believers in heaven are, praying for us in heaven there is no biblical teaching that tells us we're to pray to them and in fact there is no biblical evidence that says they can see or hear us from heaven.

ch, St. Christopher used to be the patron saint of safe travel and as a catholic we were taught to pray to him for safe travel and many catholics had statues/medals of him on their dashboards believing he would give them safe travel.

And therin lies the rub! The objects themselves are not, do not and never had become things to worship. Saints and martyrs are not worshipped, only God.

Saints are prayed to in order to ask them to pray for us, much like we ask our friends or family to pray for us. Please remember the difference between prayer and worship because they are two different things. We do not worship saints any more than we would worship our friends or family. They are just more Christian souls we ask to pray for us, part of the fellowship as it were.

ch, they only become idolatrous when they or the person other than God they represent become the object of our worship!

Thank yo for that clear definition of idolatry, Mr Graham.
Something that takes the place of God in our lives. I hope that clears up the misconceptions about religious art being idolatrous.
