Hispanic Christian Groups Split on Illegal Immigrants, U.S. Census

By Jennifer Riley|Christian Post Reporter

Several Hispanic organizations, including some Christian groups, spoke out this week about whether illegal immigrants should participate in the 2010 U.S. census.

The debate intensified when leaders of the National Coalition of Latino Clergy and Christian (CONLAMIC) urged illegal immigrants to boycott the census unless Congress passes immigration reform legislation. The leaders claim information obtained by the census will be used by “anti-immigrant forces” to the disadvantage of undocumented Latinos in the country.

“Our church leaders have witnessed misuse of otherwise benign Census population data by state and local public officials in their efforts to pass and enact laws that assist in the perpetration of civil rights violations and abuses against undocumented workers and families,” expressed the Rev. Miguel Rivera, president of CONLAMIC, in a statement this week.

“We cannot tell our congregants to be patient, cooperative, and to trust our government any longer. We must protect them as God would have it and urge them to protect their families from any further mistreatment,” he added.

Though Rivera claims that the information collected in the 2000 census were used to target the undocumented population, census officials say the information is confidential and respondents are not asked about their immigration status or for a social security number.

Still, CONLAMIC wants the U.S. government to provide a way for the undocumented to become legal residents and workers before they agree to be counted in the census. There are an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the country.

Meanwhile, the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference (NHCLC), the largest Hispanic Christian organization in the country, has voiced its disagreement with CONLAMIC’s call and urges all Latinos to participate in the upcoming census.

NHCLC is the sister organization of the 30-million member National Association of Evangelicals and claims to represent 14.5 million Hispanic Christians on issues relating to family, immigration, economic mobility, education, political empowerment, and spiritual/moral development.

“For our communities, the benefits of participating in the census are essential to accurate representation, allocation of resources, and to gauge how our community continues to grow,” said the Rev. Wilfredo De Jesus, vice president of social justice for the NHCLC, in a statement Thursday.

“The clear majority of Latino advocacy and faith organizations support the efforts of the U.S. Census Bureau to count each person in America in 2010, including the traditionally undercounted Hispanic population,” he said.

Arturo Vargas, executive director of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) and a member of the Decennial Census advisory committee, further pointed to the consequences of skipping out on the census.

"To do this boycott to pressure comprehensive immigration reform is like cutting off your nose to spite your face," Vargas told The Associated Press. "There is no connection between the census and immigration reform; it's undermining the community by encouraging an undercount; and it's misguided and irresponsible."

He added, "The census is confidential and is a constitutional requirement. In essence, they're encouraging people to break the law."

People who refuse to answer a census can be fined as much as $100, while those that provide false information can be fined as much as $500, according to U.S. law.

Vargas said that while everyone in the Latino community wants to see comprehensive immigration reform, the “more impactful way” to get there is to be counted rather than having an undercount.

Efforts in support of immigration reform got a boost from the Obama administration earlier this month when senior White House staff said the president plans to start tackling the thorny issue this year, with talks beginning as soon as early May. The staff, however, clarified that there is no promise for a vote this year on new immigration laws.

The best way to squelch conversation and rational debate on this inflammatory yet highly relevant topic is to call anyone who it opposed to illegal immigration a 'racist'. That is the favorite ploy of Hispanic political groups today, especially in the area where I reside. Despite that scare tactic, I choose to speak. As a long-time resident of a city within an hour of our southern border, I can tell you from experience the mostly negative effect of this unabashed invasion. Any effort to enforce the law is fought tooth and nail by local Latino political organizations as discriminatory. Unbelievable that they are permitted to get away with this. Of all of the immigrant groups in our 200 year history, this particular one apparently believes they are entitled to special treatment, at no cost to themselves, and that are, by some God-given privilege, allowed to operate outside the law. What upsets me the most is that once these people arrive here they become so outspoken and politically active. If they had only done so in their country of origin, it might have become a place they would like to call home.

Who cares if their counted or not. They shouldn't be in this Country.

I can't say the ILLEGAL ALIENS are completely to blame for the shape of our economy, but they are a BIG part of the problem. The ILLEGAL ALIENS send BILLIONS upon BILLIONS out of this Country every year, money we will NEVER see again. Does this help our economy?

How about the BILLIONS the American taxpayers fork out for the ILLEGAL ALIEN BABIES, the schooling of them, the medical care and the list goes on, and on, and on.

How about the MILLIONS upon MILLIONS paid to jail ILLEGAL ALIENS for the crimes, then the cost to deport them. Does this help our economy?

Then you have these activist groups, the Catholic Church and the ACLU that want AMNESTY for these ILLEGAL ALIENS. It would be absolute suicide for this Country if AMNESTY were granted to the 20 million or so ILLEGAL ALIENS. We have more and more people out of work everyday and they want to add another 20 million to this Country? I say, "NO"!

If AMNESTY were ever granted to these 20 million ILLEGAL ALIENS, you can bet big money that 3 years from now, there would be ANOTHER 3-5 million ILLEGAL ALIENS demonstrating on our soil for AMNESTY.

An end MUST come to this illegal immigration. The perfect tool we have so far is E-Verify. It MUST be used by ALL businesses and Government Social Services. EVERY employee must be checked! If they are illegal, they are to be dismissed!

I believe it is time for all 50 States to pass a State law, like Arizona, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Missouri, South Carolina and a few others. It is time for these ILLEGAL ALIENS to go back to their home Country and get out of this Country. The problems they are causing will not go away until the ILLEGAL ALIENS are out of this Country. I think that is plain to see.

It is important as Christians, that we follow the guidance of Jesus when we pick sides or voice opinions on controversial subject matter. Jesus was very clear in that as Christians we were not to break laws.

Jesus was born in Jerusalem, where everyone used to travel annually as a census and to pay taxes. While we may agree or disagree with the laws it is our role to follow them (unless of course they are anti-christian)

It is dangerous for us or any Christians to agree with breaking laws because it sets a very dangerous precedent and is certainly not becoming of a Christian. It also helps to fuel the worldly misconception that Christians think they are better than non-Christians, which is false and a complete an utter disagreement with the teachings of Jesus.

When in doubt, trust the word of God and you will always be right :)

Your history of Mexican people is interesting - having been a history teacher, this is a new one. I'm going to have to go back and re-educate my students - LOL!

Your theology seems to be a bit misaligned as well. I don't think there are too many Christians that are going out and protesting the fact that they have a right to jay-walk or go over the speed limit. Do you?

I'm with rollin on this one. If they're here illegally (against our nation's laws) they should be shipped back to where they originated and asked to wait in line like those here legally.

We are a consensual society under a Constitution that provides rights, freedoms and the mechanics to create laws that we citizens live by. Citizens accept that breaking our laws results in proscribed punishments and full jails testify to the fact. An unholy alliance of lawbreaking illegal aliens, criminal employers and elected officials that look the other way are hypocrites and anarchists. They feel that they can pick and choose which laws are convenient for them to follow and willingly break those that are personally inconvenient. This breaks down our admired legal system and works against the rule of law that we depend upon for our daily safety and national security. All lawbreaking illegal aliens should be deported, all criminal employers should be jailed and elected officials that have failed to carry out their oath of office to defend the Constitution and our laws should be fired, voted out of office, impeached and perhaps charged with criminal dereliction of duty. The 1986 amnesty was a total failure. Never again!

As a Christian of indigenous American ancestry (that's "Indian" or "Native American" to most of you), I find it absolutely fascinating that it's largely the descendants of the "Christian" Europeans who conquered the indigenous people of this land and who formed arbitrary borders based on which territories were claimed for England, Spain, France, etc., that are now up in arms about the "illegal immigrant" problem.

Let's face it. When we're talking about "illegal immigrants," we're talking about Mexicans coming into this country illegally. Since the Mexicans are by and large of Indian blood of the North American continent, they, technically, have more of a right to be here than any one of any other race.

I can't help but look at what is happening with the population dynamic in this country and see our Mighty God at work. And one of the strongest and fastest growing evangelical communities in this nation is the Latino community.

I believe that God may very well be at work in allowing the indigenous inhabitants of this land to be fruitful here and multiply so that THEY will be able to come together with renewed spirits to glorify HIS name, while so many other comfy Americans can sit back and throw stones and cast judgment and whatnot.

Just don't say a single word about illegal immigrants if you ever drive a mile above the speed limit, or if you ever cross the street at a place where there is no crosswalk, or if you ever guesstimate numbers on your taxes rather than being exact, because you, too, are a lawbreaker.

We need to organize and support a pro-sovereignty, anti-ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION protest, similar to the African-American one million man march in 1995, on the fortress Washington, DC. There are hundreds of irate American out there, comprised of Seniors, veterans, workers, single mothers and countless others who have had enough of being intentionally ignored. No politician is going to take any American or Legal resident seriously, until all the organization who believe in the word of the US Constitution, Bill of rights move en-masse on this morons who are supposed to represent us on Capitol hill. Most are out for themselves, and don't care that illegal foreign labor is taking American jobs, that as a people we have to genuflect to Health Insurance companies. We need to let Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV)Speaker Pelosi (D-CA) and all the Senators who have no interest working for the American people, who themselves are well provided for by the business community. As they have generous federal health insurance, they don't need to go cap-in-hand, requesting health care. While foreign nationals walk into the nearest hospital with out payment or immigration papers and receive services. Americans on the other hand must show SS number, drivers license , so that the debt collectors can chase them down for payment.

Ask you Senator or Congressman how they would vote to support E-Verify, Real ID act or the local police enforcement law 247(g). Ask them why we need a new Immigration reform law, when we already have the 1986 Immigration reform & Control Act, that only needs amendments? Ask them why this law was never enforced? Demand they support E-Verify and other laws and not weaken their power. E-Verify should be made permanent and any employer who violates that law, should be severely fined, business assets confiscated and end up in prison. Tell them your be watching them from now on, especially when it's time to vote. We cannot afford to lay-back anymore as the consequences are OVERPOPULATION. Loss of Americas sovereignty! A nation that is losing its cultural, language and spiritual identity.

What part of illegal immigrant do these people don't get? I laughed one time when I heard an illegal immigrant state that - while at a protest against cracking down on illegal immigrants - she was protesting because she wanted to make a statement for her children that she's NOT A CRIMINAL! Okay, so you're here illegally - so you're a criminal fool! There only one thing worse than an illegal immigrant and that is a extraordinarily stupid illegal immigrant. Now, she's not only a crook, she's a stupid crook and a lousy parent!

We should welcome those that went through the proper procedures to get citizenship - and they most probably worked hard and patiently for this. I have friends and clients that are here legally after spending money and time.

But yes, illegal immigrants are criminals. This is not God's will. Sorry!
