TechnoratiAs many as 160,000 people heard the Gospel message last week in Honduras as American evangelist Mike Silva and his team coupled messages of hope and salvation with visible acts of kindness.
(Photo: Mike Silva International)More than 160,000 people heard the Gospel message during the Mike Silva evangelistic festival in San Pedro Sula, Honduras from April 24-15, 2009.
With a team of over 150 volunteers from the United States, Silva headed south to the impoverished country of Honduras where for six days, April 21-27, he and his team shared the Gospel and gave out food, toys, Gospel coloring books and beaded bracelets to schools, barrios, churches, and orphanages in the northern region around the city of San Pedro Sula.
Ministry volunteers also shared their faith through clowning, preaching, stories and singing.
"I came not knowing what to expect. I was surprised by the depth of poverty and hunger for both spiritual and physical food,” reflected volunteer Clay Perkins of Longview, Texas, according to Mike Silva International. “It is a tremendously humbling experience to be a part of this work and to minister in the name of the Lord to people in need."
The weeklong evangelistic campaign culminated in a two-day festival on Friday and Saturday that drew as many as 160,000 people.
Silva was joined by best-selling Christian author and megachurch pastor Max Lucado in sharing the Gospel message during the festival.
Popular music artists including Jaci Velasquez, Rescate, Raza for Christ, Vico-C, Jez, Manny Montes, Pilo Tejeda, and Jailene Cintron also shared the stage.
In addition to the festival and supply distribution, a medical team from the United States teamed up with health professionals from Cuba and Honduras to provide more than 1,000 exams and procedures ranging from dentistry to the fields of gynecology and general medicine.
“The medical needs of the people of San Pedro Sula are beyond what we could provide,” said volunteer Sara Fisher, a nurse from Silverton, Oregon, who participated in the medical ministry. “However, the Lord brought together many care professionals from all over the world to serve the people here.
“This was an excellent experience for the health care professionals involved, and we heard many great stories of people who were touched by the care they received," she added.
The weeklong evangelistic campaign was made possible through the help of more than 300 participating local churches.
The next festival that Mike Silva International plans to hold will be in Nigeria this coming September. Silva has previously teamed up with other well-known evangelists including Luis Palau, and has spoken at popular events such as the annual Christian music festival Creation Fest West and at events hosted by men’s ministry Promise Keepers.
