'Historic Night' Caps Week of Success for Joel Osteen

By Eric Young|Christian Post Reporter

Nearly 42,000 people filled the seats at the new Yankee stadium in New York this past weekend and they weren’t there to watch baseball.

They were there to listen to an uplifting message from the pastor of America’s largest church – Lakewood Church’s Joel Osteen.

During the first non-baseball event at the newly opened stadium, Osteen delivered the same message that has made him one of the most watched pastors in America and also the author of two bestselling books.

Throughout the evening, Osteen encouraged attendees to “magnify God” and not their problems, to live each day in faith and not discouragement, to give God praise first even when things are bad, and to get their hopes up.

“You can’t have faith ‘til you first have hope,” he exhorted.

Aside from marking a first for the new Yankee stadium, Saturday night marked a first for Osteen, who didn’t go searching for his biggest venue to date but was contacted by the Yankees baseball organization to preach there Saturday.

“As I look back over the events of last week, I am overwhelmed by God's favor and faithfulness; both to us and to the people of New York,” expressed Osteen on Wednesday.

“We received such a warm welcome everywhere we went, and we had so many opportunities throughout the week to share God's love,” he wrote in his blog.

In addition to Saturday’s “Historic Night of Hope,” Osteen was invited last week to join members of the New York City Council, community leaders, and clergy in the Bronx for a Luncheon of Hope to kick off the week.

He and his wife, Victoria, also later teamed up with Feed The Children to distribute food and supplies to needy families.

“Overall, the week was a tremendous success and the highlight, as I mentioned Monday, was when over 20,000 people stood in Yankee Stadium to dedicate their lives to Christ and renew their faith in Him! We couldn't have asked for a better night,” Osteen exclaimed.

And the 20,000 doesn’t include the countless numbers that participated via the live broadcast Saturday.

For the event, Osteen had formed an exclusive partnership with the Trinity Broadcasting Network, which broadcasted Saturday night’s event around the globe.

With more than 90 percent national coverage, TBN touts itself as the most watched and most requested faith-based channel in the United States and the world leader in faith-based broadcasting.

“We're so thankful to Matt and Laurie Crouch and the team at TBN for their love and support and for broadcasting the event all over the world,” Osteen reported Wednesday.

In less than two weeks, Osteen will be marking 50 years since his church in Houston was founded by his father, John Osteen, a former Southern Baptist pastor who later became charismatic. Osteen succeeded his father in 1999, more than eight months after the elder Osteen died of a heart attack.

Ahead of the anniversary, Osteen has pushed forward with a number of new projects, including a collection of greeting cards that feature his inspirational messages and the Hope for Today Bible that features insights, notes, and encouragements from Osteen and his wife.

Though Osteen has been praised by many for his uplifting messages and popular bestsellers, the charismatic minister has also received much criticism for his lack of formal theological training and for preaching what critics call the “prosperity gospel,” a belief that prosperity and success – particularly financial – is a sign of God’s favor.

Osteen, however, insists that his theology is not “dangerous,” as some say it is, and that God has used him to turn people’s lives around and to give them hope.

Aside from the 38,000 churchgoers that Osteen draws each week to his 16,000-seat church – previously the arena of the Houston Rockets – up to seven million Americans each week and more than 20 million each month reportedly view Osteen’s weekly sermon, which is broadcast into television markets across the United States.

According to Nielsen Media Research, Osteen is the most watched inspirational figure in America.

    Believers beware,
Watch out for those TBNers, as I call them. The majority of them preach a prosperity gospel. In the words of TobyMac-I don't want to gain the whole world and lose my soul.

    you have asked...
"if the fate of christianity depended on me or you to continue, where would christianity be in a couple of years"

If God saw fit for you or me to stand behind a pulpit and feed His flock, then God would prepare us for this.

Be strong and of good courage was the message for Joshua when Moses was taken. The anointing to lead Israel fell to Joshua.

I enjoy listening to Joel Osteen at times. But he tends to deliver milk over meat. Milk is good for starters, but meat is needed for maturity.

as much as i would never go to his church regulary, i do believe joel is a good man, his wife seems a little shady, but he seems real to me, there is nothing wrong w/ a message of hope, but personally i love to hear the word of God preached, the whole word of God preached, but i dont think we can say he is not genuine in motives. why are we always so quick to point, judge, condemn, cast down, instead of looking for the good in others and being like Jesus. what do we think Jesus would say to joel osteen? here is a sobering question, if the fate of christianity depended on me or you to continue, where would christianity be in a couple of years

I agree with your latest comment , 100%. False teachers and teachings are out there but I don't believe that the Lord has called us to be witchhunters. Whether Osteen speaks truth or not , he has his purpose in the grand scheme of things.

1Jn 4:1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but try the spirits to see if they are of God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

We are not to be ignorant. All teachings are to be checked. The Holy Spirit will confirm to us that a teaching is true to the Word of God.

We are very protective of our homes and families from physical dangers, but we are not so protective of our own Spiritual welfare. Our chief Accuser counts on this.

    Matthew 16:24
Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
The truth of the Gospel is Christ Himself. We are to give up our own lives to glorify the Lord. The problem with the prosperity message is that it is not what God intended for our lives. It is blessings that God will give to those who are faithful to His Word.
    Proverbs 28:20
A faithful man will be richly blessed, but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished.
    Isaiah 33:6
He will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the LORD is the key to this treasure.

    wrhalver and djt ,

In I Corinthians 4 , Paul talks about this very issue and concludes the point in verse 5: "So do not make any hasty or premature judgements before the time when the Lord comes (again) , for He will both bring to light the secret things that are (now hidden) in darkness and disclose and expose the (secret) aims (motives and purposes) of hearts. Then every man will receive his (due) commendation from God.

Cheating on your wife is an irrelevent example in this case since this is a non-negotiable. Hence no judgement call is needed to ascertain it's worthiness. Scripture forbids it , this is an absolute. If I accuse another man of this sin (with evidence) and I'm guilty of the same sin , sure , this makes me a hypocrite. However , I'm not being judgemental but pointing out an absolute. Regardless of the circumstances , it will always be wrong.

The issue raised here by marks4real is Osteen's motives for his ministry. We cannot possibly know this !! Only God sees the heart.

Judgement : (definition from the Collins English Language Dictionary) - 2.2 THE ACT OR PROCESS OF DECIDING HOW GOOD OR WORTHWHILE SOMETHING OR SOMEONE IS.
This is what marks4real (and all the folks who gave him a thumbs-up) is doing.

    Excellent expansion on that scripture.

    Thanks.

And why did we stop at verse 1 when the teaching of this passage is not that we are not to judge, but that we are to judge from a proper frame of mind and in obedience to God. In other words, deal with your own sin first so that you can move on to help and protect others from their sin. Judge with mercy, judge with discernment, judge in love, but judge!

A man who is not guilty of cheating on his wife can be critical of one who is, and judgemental if the cheating man does not want to repent.

In other words, don't even think you can point a finger if you are guilty of the same crime. That is the message in that scripture.

Do not judge and criticize and condemn others , so that you may not be judged and criticized and condemned yourselves. - Matthew 7:1 (Amplified Bible)

'Whoever saves his (best) life (now) will lose it' Matt 16
'We are not like many who peddle the word of God...' 2 Corinth 2
'...who suppose godliness is a means of gain...' 1 Tim 6
'...they exploit you with false words...' 2 Peter 2

This guy is popular for a reason; His God requires nothing of His followers, and is primarily concerned with their happiness and comfort in this world. That's not the God I see in the New testament. The article doesn't mention the admission price for this event, and based on what Osteen usually does, I doubt it was free.
