Miss Calif.: The New Family Values Spokeswoman?

By Lillian Kwon|Christian Post Reporter

Racy photos of Miss California that have recently surfaced may cost the 21-year-old her crown.

But as pageant officials review the photos and look into other possible violations of Carrie Prejean's contract, one Christian professor who specializes in sexuality issues is wondering why conservative and Christian groups are not proceeding with the same caution and instead giving her the platform.

"Prejean's pictures are the kind that normally would elicit disapproval from pro-family groups," Dr. Warren Throckmorton, associate professor of Psychology at Grove City College in Pennsylvania, told The Christian Post. "However, some groups (Dove Awards, Liberty University, Values Voters Summit, NOM) have given her a platform simply because she said she believes marriage between a man and a woman, apparently discounting the harm to family values from her risqué modeling work."

In the weeks following the Miss USA pageant – where Prejean famously said she believes marriage should be between a man and a woman – family groups and Christians have reached out to Prejean applauding her courageous response and for standing by traditional family values.

Many have gone further in their support by offering her the stage at Gospel Music Association's Dove Awards last month; inviting her as a speaker at the upcoming Values Voter Summit – a conservative political forum sponsored by Family Research Council; allocating a television spot for her famous response in a National Organization for Marriage ad; and offering a scholarship for her to attend Liberty University.

"Is anyone else puzzled by the response to our new family values spokeswoman?" Throckmorton posed in a recent blog post. "For taking a position against same-sex marriage in a beauty contest, she gets invited to the Dove Awards and offered a scholarship to attend Liberty University during her senior year by Chancellor Jerry Falwell, Jr."

Throckmorton commends the Christian beauty queen – who finished as first runner-up in the Miss USA pageant – for her honest answer on gay marriage, but has concerns over religious conservatives informally instating her as the voice for family values.

"[U]nless religious conservatives have some kind of answer to our girls about how they can lionize a Miss USA contestant and stress modesty at the same time, I do not see the virtue in giving her the platform," he stated.

Celebrity gossip website TMZ reported that it has seen four photos of Prejean posing semi-nude. They were taken when she was 17. Prejean has insisted that there was only one such photo but the second one was leaked Thursday.

In a statement released Tuesday by her publicist, Prejean said in defense, "I am a Christian, and I am a model. Models pose for pictures, including lingerie and swimwear photos.

"I am not perfect, and I will never claim to be. But these attacks on me and others who speak in defense of traditional marriage are intolerant and offensive."

"[M]y comments defending traditional marriage have led to intimidation tactics that seek to undermine my reputation and somehow silence me and my beliefs, as if opinion is only a one-way street."

Also defending Prejean, Maggie Gallagher, president of the National Organization for Marriage, commented, “Of course Carrie is not perfect. On a personal note, as a former unwed mother, I want to say to Americans: you don’t have to be a perfect person to have the right to stand up for marriage.”

Pageant officials say Prejean has breached her contract by keeping her semi-nude photos a secret. When signing the pageant contract, participants are asked to state whether they have conducted themselves "in accordance with the highest ethical and moral standard" and disclose whether they have ever posed nude or semi-nude.

Other possible violations of a 12-page contract include several interviews she has given in recent weeks and the marriage commercial she was involved in. The contract requires her to obtain permission from pageant officials before proceeding with such public appearances.

    ~Miss Hypocrite
Carrie Prejean, the Miss California contestant, was correct about homosexuality! It is mortal filth
and condemned by God's Word...but Prejean poses semi nude and topless EXPOSING HER
BREASTS and revealing the bottom of her buttocks...then lied about it...and then she parades
her body around in the Miss California Pageant EXPOSING HER PARTIAL BREASTS and
buttocks in a sexual immoral swimsuit before the world!
She is 100% a HYPOCRITE and she does NOT represent Jesus Christ nor a Christian!!
Jesus said it this way, "Anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery
with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better
for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into Hell." [Mt. 5:28,29]

Should she play some role as a spokewoman? I think she is 21 and should be given a choice. Surely she could be thrown into the wolves by putting in the spotlight. But seasoned politicians and older woman can be unfairly treated too. Think about Sarah Palin. What I say is that people should not send a signal that Christians are abandoning her.

It is alright to wrestle with this issue. The culture has changed so much that should I say, christians need to wake up to this new challenge. Let us reconstruct the situation. From what I can gather, Carrie Prejean took those pictures (apparently) with Victoria Secret. We do not know how those professionals there handle her as a teenager of 17. We also do not know how she felt between then and now. She should be given the benefit of the doubt.

I am so torn by this. On the one hand I was so proud of Carrie and still am for standing up for what she believed in at the cost of her crown. I do not support beauty pagents because I personally find them demeaning as a woman. But while I do not like people using the name of God lightly like thanking him when they win an award for a movie or music, I saw the wisdom of many people who said that maybe God had placed her in this situation for a reason. And God knows best.
Now I see that these modeling pictures of her have come when she was under age. I am so torn. I resent being called a hypocrite as a christian if I say I do not like people posing for underwear and compromising pictures and yet support modeling wearing actual clothes that are modest. And I am feeling guilty for feeling this way. This should not bother me so much. But we as christians are judged unfairly every time one of us stumbles and lumped together as hypocrites. During the Ted Haggard time, then the Bristol Palin pregnancy, now Carrie. I understand that none of us is perfect and we are not sinless ourselves. But does anyone else on this board find that when we try to witness or say something about God we are shut down mostly as being hypocritical and being perceived as having different standards of behavior for ourselves as christians and the outside world. I do not think so. I actually think if we are true christians, we are harder on ourselves. Is it just me who finds things like this as obstacles to witness. I am really looking for answers here and I would really appreciate some feedback. This has been bothering me. If it is only me, maybe I am witnessing the wrong way and I need to pray more for guidance. Thank you.

Get off the Cambridge trick and hit the comedian road. Not bad!

    Wilderness;
I agree that Miss Cal (as of this writing is still holding the title) needs to learn from her lesson - 1st for falling for the agent's gig to pose half naked and 2nd for not surrounding herself with women of godly character that would have told her otherwise. But, like all of us, we are maturing and growing. However, she's refusing to cower in some corner. I give her tremendous credit for standing up, not allowing herself to be bullied and being a spokeswoman. Her modest - hopefully - will come with her maturity over time.

Miss Prejean said, "I am a Christian, and I am a model. Models pose for pictures, including lingerie and swimwear photos."

Miss Prejean needs to repent and turn from her seductive and near naked presentations. Any platform she is given to speak to young girls should be with blushing face and with weeping, encouraging them to flee from being caught up in such immodesty.

The spiritual leaders in her life need to counsel her in the issues of modesty. They should pray for her but not exalt her or move her forward in any Christian ministry until she sees the error of her seductive immodesty and shows the fruit of repentance and maturity.

cf, I am not ridiculing her at all and in fact I'm more frustrated with those who are prematurely pushing her into the lime-light, which has been done with celebrities before and in a majority of cases has backfired.

  • Fri May 08, 2009 2:35 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 1

cf, my concern for Carrie is that she is now open to be targeted, maligned and well at her age hurt, be it physically and/or emotionally. All I was suggesting is that those that are working with her also need to protect her, reel her in when necessary and pick and choose the right opportunities for her.

The following is posted on the San Diego Christian College about Carrie Prejean before her being ridiculed by the radicals:

"Carrie Prejean is dedicated to serving the Lord and is not at all shy about her Christianity--even on national television. As the new 2009 Miss California USA, Carrie has shown that she can balance the pressures of national competition with her desire to share Christ's love with younger women.

San Diego Christian College Student - Carrie Prejean

Carrie has recently been serving with a ministry that seeks to reveal Christ's transforming love to women in the adult entertainment industry. Led by a young women who herself was delivered by Christ, the group "gets real" with these women and discusses their problems and life struggles. Carrie feels that she can connect with women her age and believes that God is using her to bring hope to others.

In addition to her passion for young women, Carrie has volunteered at the local International Ministry Center where she has helped refugees learn to speak English. She is also involved with Voices for Children, a mentor program for children in foster care. "I've been extremely passionate about that. I especially have a heart for helping young girls with low self-esteem. I want to focus on San Diego and give back to my community", she said.
Carrie is currently a student at San Diego Christian College, but decided to take the spring semester of 2009 off to prepare and compete in the Miss USA Pageant, which took place on April 19th. Her goal is to return to SDCC to finish her Bachelors Degree, and to later obtain a Masters Degree in the field of Special Education."

cf, Peter was discipled by Christ for three years, Paul spent three years in preparation for public ministry plus all He learned even as a Jew, if you mean Mary Magdelene who was not a prositute she to was discipled by Christ. This young lady says she believes in traditional marriage and gets ridiculed and cussed at as a result and that qualifies her to be a primary spokeman for cause of Christ. At best I can see her sharing her testimony and the impact the incident has had on her life.

Sure, Carrie Prejean may not be a major league in Christian teaching. But she now has a platform that no Christian teachers have. A misstep 4 years ago should not automatically disqualify her. Christians can talk among themselves all you want. But many young people just have never heard of Anne Graham Lotz or whoever you have mentioned. This is politics, folks. The new world has come to the modern church.

  • Fri May 08, 2009 11:04 am Agree: 1   Disagree: 1

I said it around 9 days ago and I will say it again. "Miss Prejean does need to repent for the seductive and near nakedness she has allowed to be displayed. No church or Christian leader should be giving her a speaking platform until she repents of her grave immodesty (published before millions), and matures, especially in decency."

  • Fri May 08, 2009 10:50 am Agree: 3   Disagree: 2

What concerns me more than the swimsuit issue is that overnight she has been given the same status as a Beth Moore or Anne Graham Lotz with regards to her spiritual maturity and biblical knowledge. With all do respect she's a minor leaguer at best who's been sent to the major leagues way to soon. This is not good for her or the cause of Christ.

There are many decent people in the gay community, but these radical militants from the left have given them a very bad name. Carrie Prejean is a beauty queen who is not perfect. With the current culture that teens are brought up, she is hardly immoral either. Just look at the swimsuit version of Sports Illustrative. Wise up. Let those who have no sin cast the first stone. Carrie can reach the young and bring them to Christ.

All the pastors, deacons, elder as well as the christians should strongly preach against gay marriage.

Christians should not dread the pressure applied by the supporters of same sex marriage or pagans. Pro-family values should be upheld and protected. We should not compromise.

I have seen 2 of the photos. If you think a woman should never wear less than a nuns habit, they are terrible. If you are a fan of Playboy or Penthouse you are still looking for something racy, I ignore the really sick extreme. If you are in the great mass between the first two, You have seen far worse on the Swim Suit cover of Sports Illustrated. NOTHING naughty is showing. The two I have seen are the about the same shot one facing left other facing right. Is it something she wishes she hadn't done? probably, is it something naughty? Not by a long shot! Is she a proper spokes person for a pure life? Unknown. If she had said same sex marriage was OK, she would have won the Miss USA pageant, If she said Med and sheep should be permitted to co-habit, she would be on the fast track to replace David Souter on the Supreme Court.

She is an intelligent person, and a great spokesperson for the cause of Christ. It is a disgrace to hold peoples' past mistakes against them. It's amazing that church and evangelical leaders are not more careful about who they endorse or consider their friends. Just because someone 'seems' to be on your side doesn't mean that they genuinely line up with God's word or live a life of holiness. There may be truth in the things that Rush Limbaugh says on his radio show, but his association with the religious right has done the cross of Christ absolutely no favors. Same thing goes for people like Ann Coulter and Sean Hannity. How many people have rejected God because they think His people are like the afore mentioned personalities?

It's time for true christians to stand on the word of God and quit compromising! Be sure of your words and actions and carefully sift your associations. Miss California is probably a nice person but by jumping on her bandwagon without getting the whole story, the church looks foolish and opportunistic.

A bad association will haunt you for years and video tape is forever. When will we ever learn?
